qBittorrent is a strong free BitTorrent client for desktop users who want fine-grained transfer controls and automation without paying for a tier. It offers queueing, file selection, RSS filters, bandwidth scheduling, search and a remote Web UI. Its main qualifications are uneven platform maintenance—especially on macOS—and privacy settings that should not be mistaken for anonymity.
What qBittorrent is—and who it suits
qBittorrent is free, open-source BitTorrent software developed by volunteers. The project describes it as an alternative to µTorrent and says it is built with Qt and the libtorrent-rasterbar library. Its GNU GPLv2 license and free-to-use status are described in the project FAQ.

It is best suited to people who want more control than a basic download queue provides: for example, users managing several transfers, selecting only particular files within a torrent, or automating legal downloads with RSS filters. Someone looking for a dedicated Android client will not find one from the project.

What features make qBittorrent useful?
The project’s feature list documents a broad set of transfer and management tools:

- Selective file downloads: choose files within a torrent and set their priorities.
- RSS automation: monitor feeds and apply advanced filters, including regular expressions.
- Bandwidth scheduling: manage transfer limits on a schedule.
- Search: use an extensible search engine to search torrent sites from the client.
- Network options: use IPv6, IP filtering, and UPnP/NAT-PMP port forwarding.
- Remote management: control transfers using the Web UI.
Together, these options make the client adaptable for recurring or multi-file transfers. They are feature capabilities, not evidence that qBittorrent is faster or more resource-efficient than another client.
How easy is qBittorrent to use?
TechRadar’s review, published July 31, 2025, characterizes the interface as minimal and approachable, with functions arranged in a conventional dashboard. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a usability study. The number of controls also means that users who only need a simple download list may have little reason to explore every setting.
The Web UI is useful when you want to manage transfers from another device, but it takes more setup than using a dedicated mobile app, according to the same review. qBittorrent does not have a dedicated Android client.
Does qBittorrent work on Windows, Linux, and Mac?
qBittorrent is offered across major desktop and Unix-like platforms, but availability does not mean every platform receives the same level of maintenance. The official download page says macOS support is barely maintained because there are no active macOS developers or contributors.

At the official page’s October 7, 2026 listing, qBittorrent v5.2.4 was the stable release and v5.3.0rc1 was a release candidate. Stable Windows and Linux builds were offered in Qt 6 variants with libtorrent 1.2.x or 2.0.x; the release candidate offered libtorrent 2.1.x or 1.2.x variants. The page listed a macOS build for v5.2.3, so its macOS version did not match the listed stable release.
If installing, use the official download page to select the build for your operating system and check its published SHA-256 checksum or PGP information where appropriate. For security fixes and changes between versions, consult the project’s release notes rather than assuming a version is current indefinitely.
Is qBittorrent safe to use?
qBittorrent is open-source software, but that alone does not establish that every build or configuration is risk-free. The project’s release history shows why version matters: v5.1.2 included fixes affecting the WebAPI, RSS and Search modules, and v5.2.1 included a fix to prevent SSRF via HTTP redirection. These notes are evidence of specific fixes, not a guarantee about the security of any other release.

No single qBittorrent setting makes torrent activity anonymous. The project wiki warns: “WARNING: anonymous mode doesn’t provide strong privacy guarantees on its own.” According to the Anonymous Mode documentation, the setting limits some information the client broadcasts, such as its user-agent fingerprint; behavior depends on the libtorrent version and whether a torrent is private.
The project also documents binding qBittorrent to a VPN interface. This can restrict the network interface the client uses, but it is a configuration technique—not a guarantee of anonymity and not a substitute for evaluating the VPN, operating system, and network setup.
Is qBittorrent legal?
The qBittorrent project FAQ calls it “a peer to peer (P2P) file sharing software” and says the software is legal. That does not make every download or upload lawful: whether sharing particular content is permitted depends on the content and applicable local law. Use the client only for transfers you are authorized to make.

For desktop users who value control, automation and remote management in free, open-source software, qBittorrent is a capable choice. Its feature set is substantial, while the clearest trade-offs are the extra configuration involved in some tasks, limited macOS project maintenance and privacy features that require realistic expectations. The available information does not establish a speed or memory winner against other clients.
