Gmail’s mobile “Help me write” shortcut was designed to open the writing assistant directly from an empty email draft. The feature has since gained a prompt bar for follow-up edits and, for eligible users, personalization that can draw on relevant Gmail and Drive content. Here’s how the original shortcut fits into the current workflow—and what to check before sending a generated draft.
What the mobile shortcut does
In an August 2024 update, Google announced that “Help me write” would appear in the body of an empty email draft on mobile. Tapping the shortcut opened the full Help me write experience; it was an entry point within Gmail, not a separate writing app. Google’s announcement is available as a search-result excerpt, so the description here reflects that announcement: Google Workspace Updates, August 2024.
How to draft and revise an email now
Google’s current Gmail Help instructions describe a prompt-based workflow. Start a new message or reply, enter what you want in the prompt bar, and select Create. To change the result, add a specific instruction in the prompt bar or choose a revision option such as Formalize, Friendly, or Shorten. Google recommends identifying the recipient, the subject or action, and the tone you want. For example, say who the email is for, what needs to happen, and whether the message should sound formal or friendly. If the draft depends on facts in an existing message or file, point to that specific email or document rather than leaving the assistant to infer the details.

Use follow-up prompts to refine the draft
A June 26, 2026 Workspace update describes a newer editing flow: after giving an initial prompt, use the prompt bar to request targeted changes, such as adding a missing detail or deadline. That makes the workflow useful both for creating a draft from scratch and for iterating on one, without treating the original empty-draft shortcut as the whole feature: Google Workspace Blog, June 26, 2026.
When Gmail may use your emails or Drive files
Google announced “Topic contextualization” and “Tone and style personalization” for Help me write in a May 7, 2026 Workspace update. These capabilities can use relevant Gmail and Drive context based on a prompt and may match the style of a user’s previous emails. Google’s rollout notice said extended rollout for Rapid Release and Scheduled Release domains began May 5, 2026, and could take more than 15 days. Availability therefore depends on the account and rollout; the announcement was reported in a search-result excerpt: Google Workspace Updates, May 7, 2026.

In a February 19, 2026 announcement, Google VP of Product for Gmail Blake Barnes said the feature could use past emails, chats, and Drive files to include relevant details and reflect a user’s writing style. Google said availability was beginning with Gemini Alpha customers, with broader availability expected in the coming months. Those are Google’s statements about the feature and rollout, not an independent verification of its protections or results: Google Workspace Blog, February 19, 2026.
When personalization is available, Google says users can select Sources to see which emails or documents Gemini used. Check those sources as well as the generated text, especially when the message includes a date, amount, deadline, or commitment.

Who can use Help me write
Eligibility depends on the particular capability, account type, plan, language, and location. Google’s current Help page says eligible Google Workspace or Google AI plans support Help me write in multiple supported languages globally, while personal Google Accounts are limited to the U.S. and supported languages. Google also announced on January 8, 2026 that drafting or polishing with Help me write was rolling out to everyone at no cost. These statements may describe different feature sets: basic drafting is not necessarily subject to the same availability as newer personalization. Check Google’s current Help page for your account before relying on a specific capability.
Google described Gmail as having 3 billion users in its January 8, 2026 announcement. That is a figure about Gmail’s service scale, not a count of Help me write users or evidence of time saved: Google, “Gmail is entering the Gemini era,” January 8, 2026.

Review the message before sending
Google warns that Gemini suggestions may be inaccurate or inappropriate and says not to rely on its features for medical, legal, financial, or other professional advice. Treat the result as a draft: verify names, dates, amounts, facts, and any promise the message makes, then check that the tone suits the recipient. Google’s guidance is on its Gmail Help page.
