Giving a farm animal an individual identity—a name, recognizable personality, preferences and other traits—can make some preschool children less willing to eat that animal. Across two preregistered 2024 studies involving 208 children, named pigs and chickens were judged more human-like, more suitable as friends and less edible than animals presented only as members of their species. A 2026 experiment with Polish 5- to 6-year-olds extended the result to a toy food-choice task: identifying a chicken lowered intentions to consume it and reduced selection of chicken slices, mainly among children who did not strongly like meat. The same manipulation did not reduce preference for pork, so the evidence points to a conditional, species-limited effect rather than a universal reduction in meat eating.
What “animal identifiability” means
In these experiments, identifiability was more than showing a realistic picture. Children saw an animal presented as an individual with a name, personal qualities and preferences. The comparison animal was described as representative of its species. Researchers then measured whether children wanted to befriend or consume it, how human-like it seemed and, in the newer work, which foods they selected.
What the preschool studies found
Named animals seemed less like food
Rabinovitch, Myślińska-Szarek, Cantarero and Byrka’s two preregistered 2024 studies included 208 preschool children. Individualized pigs and chickens received higher human-similarity and friendship judgments and lower edibility judgments than non-identifiable animals. The findings measure children’s stated attitudes and willingness, not a long-term dietary change or proof that a child will refuse meat at a meal.

The effect is not the same for every child
The 2026 studies tested whether the response appeared in a more concrete choice. Polish preschoolers aged 5–6 evaluated an identified chicken, chicken slices and pork while building a toy sandwich. Study 1 included 94 children and Study 2 included 105. Identification reduced intentions to consume the identified chicken and lowered preference for chicken slices. Children who already liked meat strongly showed a weaker response, indicating that prior food preferences moderate the effect.

Does identifying a chicken make children avoid all meat?
No. In the 2026 task, the reduced preference did not transfer to pork from another species. That distinction matters: a named chicken may change reactions to that individual or to chicken-related food, while leaving a child’s pork choice unchanged. The studies therefore do not show that personalizing one animal makes children vegetarian, eliminates meat liking or produces a population-wide diet shift. No available study estimates how many children change their everyday diet because of animal identifiability.
| Evidence | Children and setting | Identity cue | Outcome | Main result |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2024, two preregistered studies | 208 preschool children | Named pig or chicken with individual traits versus a species-representative animal | Befriending, human similarity and willingness to consume | Identified animals were seen as more human-like and befriended, and less edible |
| 2026, Study 1 | 94 Polish children aged 5–6 | Identified chicken | Intentions to consume; toy sandwich choices | Lower intention to consume the identified chicken |
| 2026, Study 2 | 105 Polish children aged 5–6 | Identified chicken, chicken slices and pork | Preference in a toy sandwich-building task | Lower chicken-slice preference, especially among children with weaker meat liking; pork preference was unchanged |
Why children can see an animal as both food and a social being
Personal details can shift an animal from an abstract food category toward an individual with a mind and relationships. That shift may increase empathy and make eating feel inconsistent with friendship. Children can still understand that meat is food while experiencing sadness, inappropriateness or discomfort about the animal’s origin; these reactions are not mutually exclusive.

What the Danish cooking study adds
Animalness can trigger rejection
A 2023 Danish school study observed 129 children aged 11–13 in eight fifth- and sixth-grade classes. Students prepared and tasted either quail or bladderwrack in a school teaching kitchen. Animal-origin food was more likely to prompt rejection associated with recognizing its animalness, feeling sorry for the animal, disgust and contamination concerns. Children made comments such as “I really feel sorry for it” and “If you cut off its head, you are an animal abuser”; these were participant remarks recorded during the activity, not expert quotations.
Hands-on preparation can support tasting
The same study found that tactile exercises increased playful and exploratory behavior. Curiosity, familiarity, good taste and turning an ingredient into a recognizable dish supported acceptance. The authors describe acceptance and rejection through three groups of influences: sensory-affective reactions, anticipated consequences and ideas about what the food represents. Because quail and bladderwrack were unfamiliar foods prepared in a school context, these results concern animalness, familiarity and cooking as well as identifiability itself.

How age, cue and context change the response
- Age: The identity experiments focused on preschoolers; the cooking observations involved 11- to 13-year-olds. Responses cannot be assumed to be identical across development.
- Cue: A unique name and preferences differ from generic animal imagery, a visible whole-animal form or handling animal-origin food.
- Outcome: Researchers measured stated willingness, friendship and human-similarity judgments, or a constructed choice such as selecting chicken slices—not verified consumption at home.
- Moderators: Meat liking, familiarity, taste, tactile play and whether food is transformed into a recognizable dish can all alter acceptance.
Practical guidance for parents and educators
If the goal is food-literacy discussion
Age-appropriate conversations about where food comes from may make animal-welfare considerations more salient, particularly for children who already have weaker meat preferences. Present the information without claiming that every child should reject meat, and allow children to describe mixed feelings.
If the goal is trying an unfamiliar food
- Use a hands-on, supervised activity appropriate to the child’s age and allergies.
- Offer curiosity-building sensory exploration rather than pressure to taste.
- Pair unfamiliar ingredients with familiar flavors or prepare them as a recognizable dish.
- Let children observe, touch, smell and decide whether to take a small taste.
- Expect different responses based on prior meat liking, familiarity and taste preferences.
The Danish authors specifically recommend tactile exercises and food-related activities in schools, kindergartens and leisure cooking settings. Their findings support exploration as a context that can increase acceptance; they do not show that cooking will always overcome sadness, disgust or concern about animal origin.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish
- Personalizing an edible animal can reduce willingness to eat that identified animal in experimental settings.
- The strongest newer evidence concerns identified chicken and chicken-related choices among Polish preschoolers.
- Effects may remain close to the identified animal or species and need not transfer to another species.
- Samples were specific to Poland and Denmark, so results should not be generalized automatically across cultures or ages.
- Experimental intentions and toy choices are not the same as measured everyday consumption.
