GitHub push protection can stop a supported credential from reaching a repository during a covered push operation. It works alongside secret scanning, which uses pattern matching and validation to identify supported secrets. The protection is not universal: coverage depends on the secret type, repository settings, push surface, and documented limits.
What happens when GitHub detects a secret before a push?
GitHub describes secret scanning as pattern matching and validation. It looks for credential patterns that it supports; it does not treat every arbitrary string as a secret. Push protection is the preventive part of that system: when it detects a potential supported secret during a covered push attempt, it blocks the push and displays a message explaining the block. GitHub’s detection-scope reference explains what it scans for, while its push protection overview describes the blocking feature.
The distinction is timing and outcome. Scanning can identify a secret in a repository and produce an alert; push protection evaluates a push operation and can prevent a newly detected supported secret from being added. A block occurs at push time, not as a guarantee that the credential was never present in a developer’s local files, working tree, or commit. If a push is not covered, a scan can also happen after the push and generate an alert.
So if GitHub blocks your push, it means the attempted operation matched a supported detection under the applicable settings—not that GitHub has determined every possible credential in the change, nor that the finding is necessarily a valid or live credential. Treat the notice as a prompt to investigate the value and its source.

Who gets push protection, and what must be enabled?
GitHub documents two forms of push protection with different scopes and prerequisites. Repository-level protection is for selected repositories and can be configured at repository, organization, or enterprise level. User-level protection applies to a GitHub.com account’s pushes to public repositories. They are not interchangeable: repository administrators can govern protection and bypass behavior for their repositories, while user protection provides an account-level control for public repositories.
| Protection mode | Scope | Default and requirement | Bypass visibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Repository push protection | Repositories configured at repository, organization, or enterprise level | Requires GitHub Secret Protection; disabled by default | A bypass is recorded and can create an alert, with alert status depending on the bypass reason |
| User push protection | A GitHub.com user’s pushes to public repositories | Enabled by default on GitHub.com for public repositories; account-level | User protection alone does not create an alert when bypassed unless repository protection is also enabled |
These settings are not the same as whether secret scanning is available for the repository. GitHub says secret scanning runs automatically and for free on public repositories. Organization-owned private and internal repositories require GitHub Secret Protection on GitHub Team or GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Repository-level push protection itself also requires GitHub Secret Protection. Consult GitHub’s feature overview for the current configuration details and detection scope for scanning availability.
For an administrator, the practical setup decision is therefore to establish the repository’s scanning eligibility first, then decide whether protection should apply at repository, organization, or enterprise level. Since repository push protection is disabled by default, do not assume it is active simply because secret scanning is available. The setting’s availability and the effective configuration can differ across repositories; verify the protection status for the repositories you intend to cover.

Which push operations can it cover?
GitHub lists several push protection surfaces for public repositories: command-line pushes, commits made through the GitHub user interface, file uploads, REST API requests, and interactions with the GitHub MCP server. Coverage of those surfaces is not a promise that every repository, credential type, or account configuration is protected. In particular, GitHub’s dedicated guide describes protection for file uploads through the UI as a public preview; treat that surface accordingly rather than as a universal, settled guarantee. The official surface list is the reference for the stated coverage.
This explains why the question “Does GitHub scan before a commit or before a push?” needs a distinction. Push protection is tied to covered operations that attempt to put content into a protected repository. A local commit is not itself a remote push, so the documented protection should not be read as a promise that GitHub blocks secret entry into a local commit. A commit created in the GitHub UI is one of the listed covered surfaces, but local workflows still need the push attempt and repository/account configuration to be in scope.
What to do when the command line blocks a push
A blocked push is a chance to fix the source before the detected value reaches the protected repository. GitHub’s command-line guide directs contributors to remove the secret from the branch or use the URL in the block message to review available allow or bypass options. The command line displays up to five detected secrets at a time, so the visible list may not be a complete inventory of every issue in a large change. See GitHub’s command-line push protection guide for the documented flow.

- Read the block message. Identify the file and detected secret type shown in the output. Follow the provided URL if you need to inspect the available options for that finding.
- Determine whether the value is a real credential. Check its source and intended use securely. Avoid copying a potentially live credential into a ticket, chat, or other place where it could spread further.
- If it is a credential, remove it from the branch. Replace the hard-coded value with a safer configuration approach, such as obtaining the value from an appropriate secret store at runtime. Then review the change so that the credential is no longer part of the content being pushed.
- Check the branch history if the secret was committed. Removing a value in a later commit does not remove it from earlier commits. If it has been exposed in repository history, clean up that history as appropriate and coordinate the change with anyone who depends on the branch.
- Rotate or revoke an exposed credential. If the value was real and could have been accessed, invalidate it with the credential provider and replace it with a new value. Deleting the text alone cannot make an exposed credential safe again.
- Retry only after addressing the finding. If the value is a false positive or a permitted test credential, review the bypass choices in GitHub’s message and follow your organization’s approval policy instead of treating a bypass as remediation.
GitHub says the command-line flow does not block a secret for which an alert already exists. That is a specific workflow behavior, not a reason to ignore an existing alert: determine whether the credential remains valid and remediate it if it is real.
What can push protection miss or handle differently?
Push protection is limited to a subset of the most identifiable patterns that can generate user alerts. A secret type must be supported for the feature to block it; check GitHub’s current supported detection scope before assuming a particular credential is covered. Even a supported family can have format and context conditions.
- Credential pairs may need to appear together. For pattern pairs—such as an access key and its corresponding secret—GitHub detects the pair only when both pieces are present in the same file and pushed to the repository. Putting one component in another file can prevent that paired detection.
- Legacy formats may not be included. GitHub notes that some older token formats are not supported for push protection. Its example is Azure Storage Keys, for which recently created formats are supported rather than legacy patterns.
- Large pushes can time out. A scan may not finish in time to block the push; GitHub may still scan afterward and create an alert. A successful push therefore does not prove that no secret was present.
- Some public-repository pushes are skipped by size. GitHub says a push larger than 50 MB to a public repository is skipped. This is a documented threshold for that public-repository case, not a general claim about all repository types.
- Very large numbers of already-alerted secrets change the result. A push containing more than 1,000 secrets that already have alerts is not blocked. This threshold concerns secrets with existing alerts, not a general allowance to push new credentials.
- Only a limited number of new findings are shown at once. GitHub displays at most five newly detected secrets at a time, so review and resolve the reported findings before assuming the change is clear.
- Validation context can matter. GitHub says validity checks can make legacy GitHub tokens scoped to one GitHub environment undetectable in scanning from another environment’s context.
These limits explain why push protection should be treated as a preventive layer rather than a complete security boundary. It reduces the chance of accidental exposure for covered patterns and operations, but it does not replace secure credential handling, provider-side revocation, or review of secret-scanning alerts.

What happens if a contributor bypasses a block?
With repository-level protection, a writer may be able to proceed by giving a reason. GitHub records the bypass in an alert and an audit-log event, and sends email notifications to relevant repository owners, security managers, and repository administrators who watch the repository. The alert’s status reflects the reason supplied: “Used in tests” and “false positive” lead to closed alerts, while “I’ll fix it later” leaves an open alert. A closed alert is a record of the bypass reason, not proof that the value was harmless.
Organizations can use delegated bypass to control who may bypass protection, approve bypass requests, or be exempt. That makes bypass a governance choice: contributors should use the available reason that accurately describes the finding, while administrators should decide who can authorize exceptions and how those exceptions are reviewed. GitHub’s push protection documentation describes the recorded events and controls.
User-level protection has a different visibility caveat: bypassing that mode alone does not create the same alert behavior unless repository-level protection is also enabled. Teams that need repository auditability should not assume a user’s account-level control produces repository-level alerts.

How to use the feature without relying on it too much
For developers, the useful mental model is “detect and block supported patterns at covered push time,” not “GitHub guarantees no credential can get into the repository.” For administrators and security teams, that distinction should shape both rollout and incident response.
- Confirm which repositories have secret scanning and which have repository push protection enabled; eligibility for scanning does not mean repository push protection is turned on.
- Check whether the credential types your team uses are in GitHub’s supported detection scope, including whether a pair of values must be in the same file.
- Make sure developers know how to interpret a block, assess the credential safely, and request a justified bypass where organizational policy allows one.
- Review alerts and audit events, including findings created after a scan timeout or following a bypass.
- When an actual credential was exposed, coordinate credential rotation or revocation and history cleanup rather than relying on a later deletion commit.
Those practices cover the gaps between a pattern detector and complete secret hygiene: local commits can exist before a remote push, unsupported or legacy values may not match, and documented exceptions can allow content through. Push protection is most useful when the team understands both what it blocks and what it does not establish.
