Geologic maps help identify hazard-prone settings by showing where different kinds of rock and sediment occur. They provide context—not a flood boundary, a prediction that a slope will fail, or a property-level erosion assessment. For useful screening, pair geology with hazard-specific maps, terrain and drainage information, event history, and local guidance.

What a geologic map shows—and what it does not

A geologic map classifies and locates mapped materials, from loose sand and gravel to bedrock. Its legend explains what the map’s units represent; the mapped colors or patterns are not hazard ratings unless the map specifically says they are. Two nearby areas can have different mapped materials, and those differences help explain why water or slopes may behave differently across a landscape.

That makes geology useful as one input to land-use choices, infrastructure planning, hazard identification, and mitigation. But a geologic map answers a different question from a flood-hazard map, a record of past landslides, or an erosion assessment. It describes the mapped geology; it does not, by itself, show the probability, depth, timing, or extent of a particular hazard.

The U.S. Geological Survey’s national geologic map brings together existing maps, provides multiple data layers, and points users toward more detailed local mapping. In its August 28, 2025 release, USGS described the product as covering the lower 48 states and said other areas were planned. That release is a description of the product at that time, not a guarantee that the national view answers a local question or that every place has equal map detail.

How geology contributes to screening each hazard

Flooding: understand the setting, then check flood-specific information

Geologic and surficial-material maps can help a reader understand the physical landscape and the kinds of materials present. That context can inform questions about how water moves through or across an area, but the available evidence does not support using a geology map alone to draw a flood boundary or forecast flooding. A mapped unit is not a substitute for current flood, hydrologic, elevation, drainage, or local planning information.

When comparing maps, first identify what each one depicts. A geology map describes materials; a flood product may model a hazard; an observed-flood record documents events that occurred. Those products can complement one another, but they do not answer the same question. A location not marked on one type of map should not be treated as cleared of every other hazard.

Landslides: combine material, slope, history, and runout

Landslide screening is the strongest-supported application in the USGS material. Landslides typically begin on slopes and are most common on steeper ones. They often recur in places where landslides have happened before. Conditions associated with landslides include fractured rock or debris, deep soils, and thin soils over bedrock. Geology helps identify the mapped materials, while terrain and event records add other necessary parts of the picture.

Do not look only at the point where a slide might start. Some landslides travel hundreds to thousands of feet in stream channels. A source slope, its downslope route, and channels that could carry material are all relevant to screening. A location away from a steep slope may still warrant attention if it lies along a possible runout path.

USGS landslide resources distinguish historical inventories from susceptibility or potential-risk products. An inventory records mapped past events; a susceptibility product indicates settings with potential for future landsliding. Neither is a promise that a slide will occur at a particular place or time. The national inventory and susceptibility map compiles contributions from federal, state, and local sources, and associated geospatial products can support assessment. Follow the resource’s local links where available, and check the underlying map’s coverage and purpose.

Erosion: geology is context, not a rate or setback

Rock and surficial materials help describe the landscape in which erosion takes place. They do not, by themselves, measure how quickly a bank, coast, or hillslope is eroding, predict a specific erosion event, or establish a safe property setback. Erosion depends on processes and conditions beyond the mapped geologic unit, so a general geology map cannot stand in for a local assessment.

The USGS material summarized here does not provide a comprehensive nationwide erosion-screening method. For a decision involving a particular place, seek current local coastal, riverine, or hillslope erosion information as appropriate. Treat the regional geologic map as background for interpreting that material, not as a substitute for it.

How to use maps together

A practical review moves from broad context to hazard-specific evidence. It does not turn a regional map into a site investigation. Use these steps to organize a screening conversation or to identify what information is still needed.

  1. Locate the area and check the map scale. Start with the broad map to orient yourself, then determine whether it offers enough detail for the question. A national or regional view is an initial screen, not local confirmation. The USGS national map points users toward more detailed maps where available.
  2. Read the legend, date, and stated purpose. Identify the mapped rock or sediment unit and what the unit means. Check when the map was published or revised and what it was made to show. A map’s age and purpose affect how confidently it can answer a present-day planning question.
  3. Add the product that directly addresses the hazard. For slope failure, examine landslide inventories and susceptibility products. For flooding or erosion, find the relevant flood, hydrologic, drainage, coastal, riverine, or hillslope information for the location. Keep observed events distinct from modeled hazards and susceptibility.
  4. Consider conditions that trigger movement and routes it can follow. For landslides, account for slope, prior events, mapped materials, and possible channel runout. For post-fire debris flows, USGS estimates use rainfall along with basin shape, burn severity, and soil properties. That example shows why a geology layer alone cannot represent a changing, condition-dependent hazard.
  5. Use the result at the level it supports. A map combination can help flag questions for land-use planning or mitigation. For a site decision, consult the relevant local authority and qualified geoscience or engineering professionals. Do not present an overview map as a site investigation or professional engineering conclusion.

How to compare maps before relying on them

When several maps cover the same location, compare their purpose and evidence rather than treating them as interchangeable layers. These checks help reveal whether a map is useful for orientation, screening, or a more local decision.

  • Coverage and scale: Confirm that the location is within the mapped area and that the map’s detail fits the question. National coverage does not mean uniform local detail.
  • Publication or revision date: Note when the map was prepared or updated. A dated product may still provide useful context, but its date matters when the decision depends on current conditions.
  • Mapped subject: Separate geology from records of observed events, susceptibility maps, and scenario-based hazard models. A map of one subject cannot automatically answer questions about another.
  • Inputs and assumptions: For a hazard product, look for the information it uses and the conditions it represents. Post-fire debris-flow estimates, for example, incorporate rainfall, basin shape, burn severity, and soil properties.
  • Intended use: Determine whether the product is a regional screening resource or was prepared for a more local decision. Do not infer a parcel-level conclusion from a regional overview.

Common misreadings to avoid

  • “The area is not marked as hazardous, so it is safe.” A geology map may not depict hazards at all, and a hazard product may have limited coverage or a different purpose. Check the map type and its limits before drawing conclusions.
  • “A mapped landslide means another one will happen there soon.” Past events are important clues because landslides often recur in places where they have happened before, but an inventory does not provide a specific future date.
  • “The slope is not on the property, so it cannot matter.” Landslide material can travel downslope and through stream channels, so consider potential runout as well as the source slope.
  • “The geology map gives an erosion rate or setback.” A general map of materials does not establish either. Use local erosion assessments for those questions.
  • “A single layer is enough.” Geologic setting is one factor. Meaningful screening combines it with terrain, drainage and hydrologic information, event history, and the applicable local hazard products.

Where geologic maps fit in planning

Geologic maps are useful because they put hazards in physical context. They can help planners and property decision-makers ask better questions about materials, slopes, infrastructure, and the relationship between a site and its surroundings. USGS identifies land use, infrastructure, community planning, and hazard mitigation among the uses of geologic mapping.

The key is to match the map to the decision. Use a regional geology layer to understand what materials are mapped in an area; use hazard-specific products to examine flooding, landslide history or susceptibility, or erosion; and seek local professional advice when a decision depends on site conditions. The national map is a starting point for that process, not a substitute for local evidence.
