Generative AI learns patterns from examples and uses them to produce new responses to prompts. A text model may generate a reply by predicting one token at a time, but fluent wording is not proof that the answer is correct. Understanding that distinction helps you use these systems without treating their output as an authority.
How does generative AI work?
A generative model learns relationships in examples and uses those learned patterns to create output in response to an input. For a text model, the input is a prompt and the output is generated text. This is not best understood as looking up a finished answer in a database: the model is generating a response based on patterns it learned.
OpenAI describes ChatGPT’s text generation as processing text in tokens and predicting likely next tokens in sequence. A token can be a word, part of a word, or another text unit. This is a useful high-level explanation of text generation, not a complete account of every architecture or of image, audio, and other modalities. OpenAI’s explanation of how ChatGPT and its foundation models are developed describes its own systems; it should not be treated as a universal recipe used by all providers.

Model development can involve several stages. OpenAI’s published account describes data preparation, pretraining, post-training, evaluation, and continued improvement after deployment. These are categories in OpenAI’s description, not a guarantee that every provider uses the same data, process, or sequence.

Pretraining: learning patterns from examples
During pretraining, a model learns statistical relationships from training examples. For a language model, those relationships help it estimate what text is likely to follow a given context. The result is a model that can generate many kinds of text, rather than a collection of hand-written answers to every possible prompt.
Data sources and development practices differ by provider. OpenAI describes its own approach in its April 30, 2025 account of model development. That account is evidence about OpenAI’s published approach, not independent evidence about all generative AI systems. Pattern learning also does not establish that a model can never reproduce material from training; no universal guarantee of that kind follows from the general explanation.
Post-training: shaping how the model responds
Post-training can make a model more responsive to instructions and human preferences. It can influence how the model handles a request, but it does not guarantee truth, safety, or perfect alignment. OpenAI’s publication on aligning language models to follow instructions describes remaining failures in the English-language setting it studied.

Its explanation of the Model Spec also notes that training cannot cover every possible behavior or edge case.
Why can AI make things up?
A model generates plausible continuations; that process does not itself verify whether a statement is true. As a result, an answer can sound confident and coherent while containing invented or misleading details. OpenAI calls plausible but false statements hallucinations and notes that fabricated citations can be one form. Its discussion of why language models hallucinate argues that training and evaluation practices that reward guessing instead of expressing uncertainty can contribute to the problem.
When a claim matters, check dates, facts, quotations, and references against reliable sources. Follow citations to the original material rather than assuming a citation is real because it looks convincing. OpenAI’s help documentation cautions: “But like any language model, it can produce incorrect or misleading outputs.” OpenAI’s answer to whether ChatGPT tells the truth is specific to its product, but the practical warning is important whenever you use generated text.

What limits how much a model can handle?
Every model has a maximum context length: a limit on how much prompt and generated output can fit in a single request. OpenAI’s API documentation states that the prompt and output combined must fit within the selected model’s context limit. The actual limit depends on the model and can change, so check the documentation for the specific model rather than relying on a universal context-window number. See OpenAI’s API documentation on key concepts.

What should you take away?
- Generative AI learns patterns from examples and uses them to generate output from a prompt.
- Token-by-token prediction is a useful high-level account of text generation, not a complete explanation of every model or modality.
- Training and post-training shape a model’s capabilities and behavior, but do not guarantee that every answer is true, safe, or complete.
- Fluent wording and plausible citations can still be wrong; verify consequential claims against reliable sources.
- Context limits are specific to the model, and both prompt and generated output count toward them.
