Gemini may feel redundant if you judge it only by open-ended chat. Its more practical appeal can emerge when it works with Google services already in your routine and helps with small, repeatable tasks. One XDA author described finding that fit after connecting services such as Maps, Gmail, and Keep; that is a personal account, not proof that Gemini outperforms other assistants or will save every user time.
Why Gemini can seem unnecessary at first
If you already use another chatbot, opening Gemini to ask the same general questions may not reveal a compelling reason to add it to your routine. The XDA author behind the experience reflected in this article initially felt that Gemini was redundant alongside other assistants and local models. Their change of view came from exploring Google services and apps they already used, rather than treating Gemini as a replacement for every other tool.
That distinction matters: this is a story about fit, not a universal ranking. The author’s examples suggest a useful way to evaluate Gemini—try it in the context of familiar workflows, then decide whether the convenience is worthwhile for you.

Google describes the feature this way: “Gemini Apps can connect to other apps to complete your request and give you more helpful responses.” What that means in practice depends on which apps and actions are available to your account. The XDA author described connecting Google Maps, Gmail, and Keep, and exploring Calendar, Drive, YouTube, and Android Auto. Examples included asking about places or directions, finding inbox information, retrieving saved notes, and using Calendar or Drive context. These are the author’s reported examples, not independently reproduced tests. Google’s current feature guidance is at Gemini Apps and Connected Apps.
#1 Best Overall
Start with information you already look up
One possible use is asking for information from an app you already rely on—for example, looking for a saved note or locating relevant inbox details. If you often switch apps just to retrieve information, an assistant that can access the relevant connected app may reduce that friction. Whether it can handle a particular request depends on the supported actions shown in your settings.
Use context for a next step
Google’s documentation describes Connected Apps examples such as summarizing Gmail, creating Calendar events, searching productivity apps, finding and playing media, and some device controls. These capabilities are not universal. Check the available apps and actions in your own Gemini Connected Apps settings before building a workflow around any example.
Rank #2
Try a small task before making it a habit
The XDA author found recurring value in modest jobs: tidying rough notes, turning scattered thoughts into lists, and organizing information they had collected. Those tasks are a practical starting point because you can judge the result quickly without asking Gemini to manage a high-stakes decision.
- Pick one recurring annoyance. Choose a low-stakes task such as organizing rough notes or finding a saved item.
- Check whether the relevant app is available. In Gemini, inspect Connected Apps settings and the supported actions for your account. Google says users can connect or disconnect apps there.
- Check account and activity requirements. Sign-in is required. On personal accounts, Keep Activity affects Connected Apps: with it off, Connected Apps are unavailable on Gemini web, iOS, and smart watches, while a narrower set remains available on Android.
- Try one specific request. Ask for a task grounded in information you expect Gemini to access, then check whether the result is accurate and useful.
- Decide based on your own workflow. If the connection does not make the task easier or more reliable, there is no need to keep using it.
Google’s documentation does not establish a general amount of time saved or a productivity advantage. The point of this trial is to see whether the feature fits your own routine, not to assume a gain.
Rank #3
Check availability before relying on an integration
Google says Connected Apps availability can vary by location, language, device, account, and Gemini app. Work and school accounts have additional eligibility conditions, including Workspace edition and administrator enablement. Google documents workplace uses such as searching Gmail, summarizing Drive documents, and working with Keep, Calendar, Tasks, and other Workspace services; it also lists limitations. For example, Gemini cannot create a Gmail draft or delete Gmail messages through Connected Apps. See Google’s Connected Apps guidance for work or school accounts and confirm what your administrator permits.
Do not assume that an example available to another person will appear in your app. Your account type, device, location, language, and administrator settings can change what is offered.
Rank #4
Understand the data implications before connecting apps
Connecting an app allows relevant content to be part of the Gemini workflow. Google says Gemini Apps activity, including connected-app data, may be used to improve Google services and train generative AI models when Keep Activity is on. Google distinguishes that activity from directly training on source data such as Gmail inboxes, Drive, Contacts, Calendar, and Google Photos imagery or audio: it says summaries, excerpts, generated media, and inferences may be used instead. Google warns users not to connect apps containing personal or confidential information they would not want used for training. Review Google’s Gemini Apps privacy and data-use information before enabling an app.
What about Gems?
Google’s help page says users can create and save Gems to customize responses. It also says Gems on personal Google accounts will go away and transition to skills starting in November 2026. Because that change is scheduled to begin soon, instructions based on creating a Gem may not remain current; consult Google’s Gems help page for the latest status.

How to decide whether Gemini belongs in your routine
Rather than asking whether Gemini is the best chatbot overall, ask whether its available connections solve a small problem you encounter often. Consider these practical checks:
- Does it support the Google app and action you actually need?
- Can your account, device, language, and location use that connection?
- Are you comfortable with the data-use implications and your activity settings?
- Does the workflow feel simpler than opening the app yourself?
- If you use a work or school account, does your administrator allow it?
The XDA author’s experience points to a reasonable evaluation method: start with a familiar, low-stakes task and see whether app context makes Gemini more useful than a blank chat window. That may be enough to earn it a place in some routines, but it is not evidence of a universal productivity boost or a reason to abandon other assistants.
