A small microcontroller does not run Gemini locally: it sends a request over the internet to Google’s hosted API, then reads the response. To make that work, the board needs network access, an HTTPS client that verifies Google’s server certificate, a properly authenticated request, and firmware that can handle the returned data and errors.

What happens when a microcontroller calls Gemini?

The board acts as a client in a cloud round trip. Its firmware connects to the internet, sends a request to Google, waits for the hosted service to process it, and receives a response. The model is not running on the microcontroller.

  1. Connect: Join Wi-Fi or another internet connection supported by the board.
  2. Send: Make an HTTPS request to the API endpoint, including the selected model, input, and authentication.
  3. Wait: Google processes the request remotely. Network conditions and the chosen work affect how long the round trip takes.
  4. Read: Check the HTTP status, receive the response body, parse its JSON, and use the fields the project needs.

REST is useful for this pattern because it is an HTTP request; Google says its REST APIs can be used in any environment that supports HTTP requests. The documentation’s standard generateContent request pattern is a concrete example, even if a project does not use Google’s Python or JavaScript SDKs: Google Gemini API reference: generateContent.

Can an ESP32 make the request?

ESP32 is a documented example, not a guarantee that every board or configuration is ready for every Gemini request. Espressif documents Wi-Fi station mode for connecting to an access point and an ESP-IDF HTTP client that supports HTTPS. In ESP-IDF, HTTPS uses mbedTLS; certificate verification can use a PEM certificate or the ESP x509 certificate bundle. See the ESP HTTP Client documentation for ESP-IDF v5.5 and the Arduino-ESP32 Wi-Fi documentation.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

For another microcontroller, check its own networking and TLS stack rather than assuming ESP32 capabilities apply. In particular, the HTTPS client must verify the server certificate. Turning verification off to make a connection work removes an important protection and is not a safe shortcut.

What does a generateContent request contain?

Google documents generateContent as an HTTP POST to a model-specific REST endpoint. The model name goes in the URL path. A simple text prompt is placed in the JSON request body under contents, with text inside a parts array. REST authentication uses the x-goog-api-key header, and the request body should be sent as JSON.

This is the documented request shape, not a complete, copy-and-paste firmware program: the model placeholder, key handling, HTTPS setup, JSON serialization, and response parsing must be implemented for the chosen board and framework. Google’s full REST format is in the generateContent API reference.

Which Gemini API should a new project use?

Google’s API reference lists Interactions as its recommended standard primitive, oriented toward agentic workflows, server-side state, and more complex multimodal or multi-turn work. The same reference describes generateContent as a standard endpoint that returns the full response in one package, which can suit a request-and-wait exchange. However, Google’s generateContent quickstart calls that API legacy and recommends Interactions for new projects.

So generateContent is a clear way to understand the request/response mechanics, not a claim that it is Google’s preferred choice for every new build. Before implementation, check Google’s current guidance for the intended use case, endpoint, model name, and API status.

How should firmware handle the response?

The API returns a response object as JSON. Firmware needs to read the HTTP status and body, parse the JSON, and extract the content the application expects. It should also handle failed connections, timeouts, and API error responses rather than treating every reply as a successful text result.

Size the request and response handling for the actual board, content, and firmware stack. TLS buffers, JSON construction, and response parsing all use device resources; no universal memory threshold follows from the API documentation. Consider what happens if a response is larger than expected or the connection drops while it is being read.

Where should the API key go?

Google says, “Treat your Gemini API key like a password.” It warns against exposing keys in production client-side code because compiled code can be extracted, recommends a backend proxy for client-side applications, and advises against checking keys into source control. Those principles apply to a physical device too: a person with access to shipped hardware may be able to inspect its firmware or stored credentials. Applying Google’s client-side warning to embedded devices is a practical security inference.

For a private prototype

A developer may choose to place a key in prototype firmware, but should regard it as extractable. If exposed, it could be abused to consume project quota or incur charges. Do not put a real production credential in a public example repository.

For a product shipped to others

A safer design is device → your authenticated backend → Gemini API. Keep the Gemini credential on the backend rather than in each device. A backend can also be designed to authorize devices, set request limits, control logging, and revoke access centrally; those are useful design choices, not requirements asserted by Google.

Google’s key documentation describes a move to authorization keys and a September 2026 transition deadline for standard keys. Because that date has passed, check the current Gemini API key documentation and the behavior shown in your Google account before following key-migration steps; the published deadline alone does not establish how a particular project is being handled now.

What to check before choosing hardware or writing firmware

  • Internet access: Confirm that the board and its radio can connect to the available network.
  • HTTPS and certificates: Verify that the framework supports TLS and that server-certificate verification is configured correctly.
  • Memory and payloads: Allow for TLS buffers, request serialization, and response parsing for the content your project sends and receives.
  • Resilience: Decide how the firmware handles timeouts, connection loss, HTTP/API errors, and retries.
  • Credential exposure: Choose prototype or product-appropriate key handling before distributing firmware.

Board-level limits and end-to-end behavior depend on the specific board, framework, TLS configuration, payload, and implementation. The ESP32 documentation establishes that relevant Wi-Fi and HTTPS capabilities exist in its ecosystem; it does not establish that every ESP32 board can handle every request or that a particular build has been tested.
