Game sharing on PlayStation and Xbox lets other accounts use eligible digital content through a console designated by the account that owns it. On PS5, that setting is Console Sharing and Offline Play; on PS4, it is Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4; on Xbox One and Xbox Series consoles, it is Home Xbox. These settings grant access under platform license rules—they do not transfer purchases to another account, and they do not make every subscription benefit or in-game item shareable.
What game sharing actually does
A digital purchase is associated with the account that bought it. The console-sharing settings described here let other accounts use some of that account’s content on a particular console. That is different from giving another person ownership of the purchase: the original account remains the purchaser, and access is governed by that account’s settings, licenses, subscription status, and the platform’s rules.
The practical household arrangement is usually to designate the console used by the other player as the purchaser’s shared console. On that console, eligible content can be available to other local accounts. The purchaser can also sign in on a different console, but what other people can do there is more limited and depends on the platform.
“Game sharing” is an informal name, not a promise that every download, add-on, or subscription feature will work for every account. PlayStation and Xbox have different names and rules for the designated console, offline use, subscription benefits, and simultaneous play.

These are platform policy descriptions for PlayStation consoles and Xbox One/Xbox Series consoles. Microsoft’s console-sharing model is distinct from its Windows sharing policies.
How to share games on PS5
Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play
- On the PS5 you want other household users to use, sign in with the PlayStation account that owns the games or media.
- Open Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Choose Enable.
- Have the other person sign in to their own user account on that PS5 and access eligible games that the owner has purchased and downloaded.
PlayStation’s support guidance says Console Sharing and Offline Play can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. If the purchasing account already has it enabled on another PS5, disable it there before enabling the new console. PlayStation also describes remote device deactivation as an option when you cannot access the prior console.
What other users can do on that PS5
With the setting enabled, other users of the configured PS5 can play the account owner’s purchased and downloaded games and media, including when the console is offline. This is the key advantage of the PS5 setting for a household: the owner does not have to remain signed in for every other user to access eligible content on that console.

If another user cannot open a title, first check that the purchasing account owns it, that it is downloaded, and that Console Sharing and Offline Play is enabled for the intended PS5.

How sharing works on PS4
PS4 uses a different setting from PS5: the purchasing account activates one console as its Primary PlayStation 4. Do not look for a “primary PS5” setting; PlayStation names the PS5 feature Console Sharing and Offline Play.
PlayStation’s guidance on PlayStation Plus says selected benefits can be shared on one primary PS4 and on one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled. That is a specific allowance for the stated Plus benefits, not permission to activate every console used by friends or to share an account’s purchases without limit. The arrangement is for the configured consoles.
To configure the PS4, sign in with the account whose games or Plus benefits should be shared, then use the PS4 activation option named Activate as Your Primary PlayStation 4. PlayStation treats this activation separately from the PS5 setting. The cited support guidance does not establish an identical list of all PS4 game-sharing behavior in the way it describes the PS5 feature, so check the title’s license and account status if an item does not work as expected.
Which PlayStation Plus benefits are shared?
PlayStation Plus is not shared as one all-or-nothing bundle. PlayStation identifies a selection of benefits that can be used by other players on the configured PS4 or PS5; availability of catalog games depends on the membership plan.

- Shareable benefits: online multiplayer; games downloaded after purchase with a Plus discount; downloaded Monthly Plus games; and catalog games, depending on the membership plan.
- Account-specific or excluded benefits: online storage; the ability to buy discounted products; redeeming Plus games on another account; automatic patch downloads; and early access to time-limited trials.
For example, a downloaded Monthly Plus game may be playable by other users on the designated console, but the entitlement remains tied to the account that obtained it and the applicable membership and license conditions. Another user does not acquire the right to redeem that Plus game on their own account simply because it is playable on the shared console.
Because catalog access depends on plan and a subscription benefit may be account-specific, check the current membership and game license before assuming a particular title is available to every user. A game being visible or playable on one account does not mean its cloud storage, redemption rights, or other Plus features transfer with it.
How to share games on Xbox One and Xbox Series
Designate the Home Xbox
- On the Xbox console you want other accounts to use, sign in with the account that owns the digital games or subscription access.
- Open Settings > Personalization > My home Xbox.
- Choose the option to make that console the account’s Home Xbox.
- Other accounts on the Home Xbox can then use eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and content enabled through a subscription without the purchasing account remaining signed in.
On the Home Xbox, the console has offline licenses for eligible content. This is useful when the purchaser is not using the console or it is temporarily offline, but it does not turn an account-specific license into a transferable purchase.

Use the purchaser’s library on another Xbox
The purchaser can sign in on a different, roaming Xbox and use their library while signed in and connected. Other users on that roaming console depend on the purchaser remaining signed in; Microsoft says roaming licenses for other users on that device become invalid when the purchaser signs out. This is different from the Home Xbox, where eligible access is available to other accounts without the purchaser staying signed in.

Microsoft’s model permits a different user to use the Home Xbox while the purchaser plays on a roaming console, subject to the platform’s one-console-at-a-time rule for the same game. Do not interpret that as a general guarantee that two accounts can play every shared title simultaneously in every configuration; the game’s own license and Xbox’s rules still apply.

Home Xbox sharing covers eligible digital games, durable add-ons, and content enabled through a subscription. Durable add-ons are content that is not consumed or used up, subject to the applicable license. Consumables are different: examples include in-game currency and limited-use items, which stay with the account that purchased them. Microsoft’s developer documentation states: “Ownership of consumable add-ons is entirely per account and isn’t shared.”
That distinction matters for in-game purchases. A game itself or a durable expansion may be available to another account on the Home Xbox, while currency or a one-use item bought inside the game may not be. When an add-on is missing for another player, check whether it is a durable license or a consumable tied to the purchaser rather than assuming the Home Xbox setting failed.
Subscription-enabled content is also conditional: access is available through the Home Xbox model while the content is enabled through the subscription and covered by the relevant license. A console designation does not make a subscription permanent or guarantee access to every item after its subscription or license conditions change.

Can two people play the same game at the same time?
On Xbox, Microsoft’s rules allow the purchaser to play on a roaming console while another user plays on the purchaser’s Home Xbox, but the same game is subject to a one-console-at-a-time rule. The practical distinction is between using different consoles and trying to run the same game across more than one console under the same account’s licenses. Follow the console’s prompts if a launch attempt reports that the game is already in use or the license is unavailable.
For PlayStation, the support details covered here explain which console can share content and how selected Plus benefits work, but they do not set out a comparable same-game concurrency rule. Do not assume Xbox’s rule applies to PlayStation or promise simultaneous play on PS4 or PS5 based on the sharing setting alone. Check the game’s license and PlayStation’s current guidance for the specific setup.
Regardless of platform, the designated-console feature is about eligible access, not a general multiplayer entitlement. To play together, each person may need a separate user account, the game must support multiplayer, and any required online service or game-specific conditions must be met.

Changing the designated console
- PS5: Sharing can be enabled on one PS5 at a time. Disable it on the old PS5 before enabling it on the new one; remote device deactivation is available if you cannot reach the old device.
- Xbox: A Microsoft account can change its Home Xbox up to five times during a rolling one-year period. A change limit can prevent an immediate switch, so choose the Home console deliberately rather than treating it as a frequent toggle.
If another account cannot play a game
- Confirm that the purchasing account owns or is entitled to the game, and that it is installed or downloaded where required.
- On PS5, verify the owner’s account has Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled on that console. On PS4, confirm the account has activated the intended system as its primary PS4.
- On Xbox, confirm the intended console is the purchaser’s Home Xbox. If the other user is on a roaming console, the purchaser may need to be signed in and connected.
- Check whether the item is subscription-dependent, whether the membership is active, and whether the item is a non-shareable benefit or consumable.
- For a game that works online but not offline, check whether the console is the configured sharing console and whether the platform’s offline license applies to that content.
Keep account access under control
Sharing a console license does not require handing over account credentials as a routine step. Configure the designated console while signed in as the purchaser, then let other household members use their own console accounts. This keeps purchases, saves, redemption rights, and account-specific benefits associated with the correct person and makes it easier to identify whether a problem is a console setting, license, or subscription issue.
Which setup should a household use?
If another person primarily plays on a console in the same home, designate that device: enable Console Sharing and Offline Play on the intended PS5, activate the intended PS4 as the primary PS4, or make the intended Xbox the Home Xbox. The owner can then use a separate console when the platform’s rules permit it, but roaming access and simultaneous use are not identical across platforms.
- Choose the PS5 setting when the shared device is a PS5 and offline access to the owner’s downloaded games matters.
- Use the PS4 primary-console activation for the PS4, including the selected Plus benefits PlayStation says are shareable there.
- Use Home Xbox for Xbox One or Xbox Series household sharing; account for the distinction between a Home console and a roaming console, and reserve Home changes because of the annual limit.
- Before relying on any subscription game, catalog title, or add-on, confirm its plan, license, and account-specific restrictions.
The right choice is therefore based on which console other users need to access and what type of content they need—not on an assumption that one “game sharing” switch makes a whole account portable.
