A gacha pity system is a banner-specific counter that improves or guarantees your chance of receiving a high-rarity item after enough unsuccessful pulls. The counter, its reset trigger, the maximum number of pulls, and any featured-item guarantee are separate rules. A five-star guarantee does not automatically mean the five-star will be the featured character or weapon.
The exact rules belong to the game and banner in front of you. The examples below use official HoYoverse guidance for Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail, updated in September 2025. Treat them as examples, not universal gacha standards, and check the active banner’s in-game details before spending currency.
What “pity” means in a gacha game
Pity is a counter attached to a defined banner type. Each eligible pull increases that counter until one of the banner’s guarantee conditions is met. A high-rarity result usually ends the current streak and starts a new one, but the exact reset event and carryover rule are game-specific.

A banner may guarantee a five-star item by pull 90, while separately giving that five-star only a stated chance of being the featured item. Those two guarantees answer different questions:
- Rarity: How rare will the item be?
- Identity: Will that rare item be the promoted character, weapon, or Light Cone?
- Counter scope: Which banner’s pulls count?
- Carryover: If the banner ends, which later banner inherits the count or guarantee state?
HoYoverse’s Genshin help guidance describes the reset this way: “This wish counter, or ‘pity,’ resets as soon as you obtain any 5-star item from that specific banner type.” The words specific banner type matter: a character-banner counter is not automatically a weapon-banner counter.
The four numbers and rules readers often confuse
1. Listed base rate
The base rate is the published chance associated with a pull under the banner’s stated rules. It is normally the probability before a guarantee has been reached. Quote it with the game and banner name; a base rate from one banner cannot be applied to another.
2. Consolidated rate
A consolidated rate can include the effect of guarantee mechanics over the banner’s stated calculation. HoYoverse labels the Honkai: Star Rail Character Event Warp’s 1.600% figure as consolidated “including the guarantee,” while listing a 0.600% base rate separately. These figures describe different quantities, so do not present 1.600% as if it were the unmodified chance on every individual Warp.

3. Hard-pity threshold
A hard pity is a maximum: if you have not already received the relevant rarity, the banner guarantees it by the stated pull number. For example, a 90-pull guarantee means the item arrives no later than pull 90 under that banner’s rules. Receiving the item earlier ends the count; it does not grant an additional item at the old threshold.
4. Featured-item guarantee
The featured rule determines which item you receive after the rarity roll. A banner can give a five-star at the hard-pity limit and still allow that five-star to be a non-featured item. Many systems add a second-stage rule: if the first five-star misses the featured pool, the next five-star from the relevant banner is guaranteed to be featured.
How reset, banner scope, and carryover interact
Always identify the banner before counting. Character, weapon or Light Cone, standard, and other event categories may use different counters and thresholds. HoYoverse’s Star Rail guidance states: “Each Warp banner type, such as the Character Event Warp, Light Cone Event Warp, and Regular Warp has its own independent pity counter.”
Reset and carryover are separate events. Obtaining a qualifying high-rarity item can reset a counter immediately. Ending a banner may or may not transfer the remaining count to a later banner of the same type. A carryover rule also may transfer the featured-guarantee state, not just the numerical count, but only if the game’s rules say so.
Do not infer a universal rerun policy from another game. For a rerun, open the current banner’s View Details or Wish Details panel and confirm:
- which banner category the counter belongs to;
- the high-rarity maximum and any lower-rarity guarantee;
- the featured chance and the result of a featured miss;
- whether the count and featured state continue onto the next banner of that category.
Genshin Impact: character and weapon examples
The official Genshin guide (updated September 17, 2025) gives separate rules for Character Event Wish and Weapon Event Wish. The figures below are maximum guarantees, not a claim that every pull has the same probability.

What a Genshin count looks like
Suppose your Character Event Wish record shows 73 Wishes since the last five-star and you have not triggered a reset. The 90-Wish maximum means the relevant five-star must occur within the next 17 Wishes, assuming every pull remains on that same banner type and no five-star appears earlier. If that five-star is non-promotional, the featured guarantee applies to the next qualifying five-star; it does not turn the current result into the featured character.
That arithmetic does not transfer to Weapon Event Wish. Its maximum is 80, its featured chance is different, and its counter is separate.
Honkai: Star Rail: three independent Warp categories
The official Star Rail guidance (updated September 23, 2025) lists distinct rules for Character Event Warp, Light Cone Event Warp, and Regular Warp. It also directs players to the active banner’s View Details screen for the most specific featured-item information.

Light Cone carryover in practice
If you stop a Light Cone Event Warp after 62 Warps without a five-star, the official carryover rule means that accumulated count continues to a subsequent Light Cone Event Warp. The count does not become Character Event Warp pity, and a result on another category does not satisfy the Light Cone guarantee. If you had already missed the 75% featured check, verify in the banner record that the next Light Cone five-star is marked as guaranteed featured before relying on it.
How to compare two pity systems without mixing unlike banners
Use the same checklist for both systems, but keep banner types aligned. A character threshold compared with a weapon threshold can produce a misleading conclusion because the item pools and featured rules differ.

What soft pity does—and what official pages do not establish
Players often use soft pity to describe an observed increase in high-rarity odds before hard pity. The official pages cited here provide base or consolidated figures and maximum guarantees, but they do not publish an exact soft-pity threshold or a per-pull soft-pity curve for these examples.
Therefore, a precise community estimate should not be presented as an official rule. If you use an independently measured curve, label its data source, sample, method, game version, and banner; otherwise, rely only on the stated maximum and published rates.
How to check your own pity before pulling
- Open the active banner. Select Wish Details in Genshin Impact or View Details in Star Rail.
- Name the category. Write down whether it is a Character Event, Weapon Event, Light Cone Event, Regular, or another banner type.
- Read the current rules. Record the base rate, any consolidated rate, hard-pity maximum, lower-rarity guarantee, and featured probability.
- Inspect your record. Count pulls since the last qualifying high-rarity result and note whether your next such result is featured-guaranteed.
- Confirm inheritance. Check which future banner of the same category receives the count if the current banner ends. Do not assume a different category inherits it.
- Allow for record delay. Genshin says Wish Records cover the past year and can take up to one hour to update. Use the in-game description and official notices for the complete, current terms.
Keep a note of the banner name and the date when you stopped pulling. That prevents a rerun’s changed item pool or rules from being confused with your old counter.
Why pity changes the meaning of “random”
Without a guarantee, each pull could be treated as an independent draw from the displayed pool. A pity rule makes the process conditional: your result depends not only on the current pull but also on the number of prior pulls and whether a previous high-rarity result was featured. A consolidated rate attempts to summarize that rule structure, while a hard pity states the upper bound.

A theoretical paper, Gacha Game: When Prospect Theory Meets Optimal Pricing, models hard pity as part of a repeated-purchase system. Its conclusions come from economic assumptions rather than current banner data, so it can provide context for why a visible guarantee affects player decisions but cannot establish any game’s actual rates, threshold, or carryover policy.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Counting across categories: Character Event, Light Cone, Weapon, and Regular counters are not interchangeable.
- Calling hard pity a featured guarantee: The rarity may be guaranteed while the promoted item is not.
- Using a consolidated rate as a per-pull rate: Check whether the game says the figure includes guarantees.
- Assuming every rerun inherits pity: Verify the active banner’s carryover language, including the featured-guarantee state.
- Treating soft-pity estimates as official: The cited official pages do not establish exact soft-pity curves.
- Relying on a stale record: Account for the stated update delay and confirm the displayed rules before pulling.
The Bottom Line
Use pity as a banner-specific maximum and track featured status separately. Before every pull session, verify the active banner’s rates, hard-pity threshold, featured rule, reset trigger, and carryover policy in the game’s own details screen.
