Fyreslayers are a close-range, objective-focused duardin army. They win by choosing the right moment for a once-per-battle ur-gold rune, forcing fights around objectives, and using Magmadroth-mounted heroes to add speed, durability and monster-level pressure. Their rules change with each battlepack, so use the current faction pack and seasonal points when building a list.
How do Fyreslayers play?
Fyreslayers are built for aggressive short-range fighting rather than prolonged gunlines. Their infantry and heroes want to occupy important ground, absorb a counterattack, and then hit back at close range. The army’s distinctive resource is its set of UR-GOLD RUNE abilities: five powerful effects that are each usable once per battle, with only one rune available in a battle round. That restriction makes timing more important than simply activating the strongest-looking effect as soon as possible.
Magmadroths give the faction a second operating mode. A mounted hero can cross the table faster than foot units, threaten a distant objective, engage enemy monsters and bring a large melee profile to a key fight. A Fyreslayer force does not have to be an all-Magmadroth army, however. Infantry formations can support a slower, resilient objective plan, while mounted formations can turn the army into a concentrated shock force.

- Primary plan: contest objectives, time a defensive or offensive rune, and trade units efficiently.
- Strength: flexible once-per-battle spikes and hard-hitting heroes.
- Risk: spending a rune too early, losing mobility, or committing a Magmadroth without support.
What are Fyreslayers in the lore?
Fyreslayers are a martial duardin warrior-cult organised into lodges. Runefathers and Fyrequeens lead these communities, while the Zharrgrim priesthood evaluates and smelts sacred ur-gold, forges it into runes, and oversees religious and funerary rites. Ur-gold is embedded into Fyreslayers’ flesh. In the army’s fiction, those runes channel the legacy and power of Grimnir; in the rules, they become timed bursts of battlefield power.

Magmadroths are equally important to the faction’s identity. Lodge hatcheries raise these fire-breathing, armoured descendants of the Ur-Drake. They are proud and difficult to tame, so a mounted hero represents more than a large base and a monster keyword: it is a symbol of status and a major investment of the lodge’s strength.
What do Fyreslayer runes do?
The official faction focus describes five broad UR-GOLD RUNE effects. The exact wording, timing, eligible targets and modifiers must be checked in the current faction pack, but their battlefield roles are consistent enough to plan around.

Every rune has an opportunity cost. Because only one can be used in a battle round, activating Farsight for a minor volley may mean giving up Fiery Determination before an important counterattack. Before choosing, identify the round’s actual objective: survive, arrive, hit harder, or remove a specific target.
How should you time a rune?
Use a defensive rune before damage is rolled
Fiery Determination is most valuable when it changes the opponent’s attack sequence. Do not wait until a unit has already lost models if the ward could have prevented that damage. It is particularly relevant when a unit is holding an objective that the opponent must clear immediately.
Use movement when one inch changes the turn
Relentless Zeal is not merely a charge bonus. A movement increase can put a unit within objective range, close a screen gap, reach a support hero or create a second charge threat. Measure the table before the movement phase so you know which distance matters.

Use offensive runes for a defined result
Searing Heat should be linked to a target that must die, not to a general desire for better attacks. Likewise, Farsight is strongest when improved thrown axes remove a damaged unit or force an enemy hero to stay out of position. If the enhanced attack will not change the opponent’s choices, save the rune.
Respect the one-rune-per-round limit
Plan your next two rounds before committing. A charge in the current round may justify Rune of Fury, while Fiery Determination may be needed in the opponent’s following turn. The best use is often the rune that preserves your options for the next objective rather than the one that produces the largest immediate damage number.
Are Magmadroths good in Age of Sigmar?
Magmadroths are good when your list needs a fast, durable threat that can influence several parts of the battlefield at once. They can pressure objectives, threaten enemy monsters and deliver a mounted hero into a fight that foot units cannot reach in time. They are not automatically correct for every Fyreslayer army: a large share of points in mounts can leave too few bodies to hold multiple objectives.

Use terrain and supporting units to prevent a Magmadroth from being surrounded. A mounted hero should usually arrive where its presence changes objective scoring or removes a high-value enemy, not simply where it can make an unassisted charge.
How does Seeing Red work in the Scourge of Aqshy season?
In the Scourge of Aqshy seasonal rules published on 30 June 2026, the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth has the fury-linked Seeing Red ability. Once per turn in any combat phase, the model spends one rage die. If the opponent’s fury level is lower, that level increases by one, up to seven. After spending the die, choose one of three benefits:

- Healing: roll a number of dice equal to the player’s fury level and heal one wound for each 4+.
- Temporary ward: give the unit a 5+ ward for the rest of the turn.
The choice should follow the combat’s purpose. Select extra attacks when the Magmadroth can convert them into a kill or a decisive objective clear. Select healing after the model has taken meaningful damage but is still expected to fight again. Select the 5+ ward when the opponent’s remaining attacks are likely to determine whether the model survives the phase.

Seeing Red belongs to the Scourge of Aqshy season. Its fury and rage-die interactions should not be treated as permanent Fyreslayer rules. The same seasonal article also introduces Marks of Vulcatrix enhancements and a new Vulkyn Gifts prayer lore, so check the current seasonal packet before using any of those rules in another battlepack.
Which battle formation should a Fyreslayer army use?
Battle formations reward different army jobs. Choose the formation whose trigger matches how your units actually operate, rather than selecting one because it is associated with a popular model.

The exact formation rules and any wording changes are pack-dependent. Compare the trigger, affected unit types and the distance from your scoring plan. A damage bonus that requires a charge is less useful if your army spends the game screening and holding ground; a home-territory defense is less useful if the scenario demands early forward pressure.
How do battle tactics score points?
Battle tactics are secondary objectives that award points in addition to the battleplan’s primary objective scoring. The official 2024–25 explainer described choosing a tactic at the start of a turn and receiving four victory points for completing it. It also explained that a player who won priority and chose a second consecutive turn could not select a tactic on that turn, creating a scoring cost for taking the double turn.

Those details are historical guidance, not a guarantee for the 2026 Scourge of Aqshy season. Battle tactics, their scoring values and restrictions can change between battlepacks. Read the tactic list before deployment and check the current season’s FAQ or battlepack for the exact procedure.
Build a tactic plan before the game
- Identify tactics your army can complete with its existing units, not only with perfect dice.
- Reserve a fast Magmadroth or mobile hero for a tactic that requires reaching a distant area.
- Do not spend a rune solely to complete a tactic if that rune is needed to hold the main objective.
- Account for the possibility of a double turn and its current scoring restrictions before choosing priority.
Link tactics to objective turns
A strong Fyreslayer turn often completes a tactic while also improving primary scoring. For example, a movement rune that places infantry on an objective can support both an advance-based tactic and the battleplan’s score. A mounted hero that destroys a weakened unit may satisfy a destruction condition while opening a route to the next objective. Avoid tactics that pull a unit away from the central fight unless the points gained outweigh the lost board position.

Deploy for two speeds
Keep enough infantry near the objectives you must hold early, while placing Magmadroths where they can pivot toward either flank. A mounted hero deployed too far forward may be exposed before support arrives; one deployed too far back may spend several turns paying for its speed without influencing the score.
Use the first turns to preserve options
Do not automatically activate a rune in the opening round. Establish screens, measure charge distances and identify which enemy unit threatens your scoring plan. If the opponent gives you a safe early charge, Searing Heat or Rune of Fury may be decisive; if not, preserving Fiery Determination for the first serious counterattack is often better.

Before moving a mounted hero, state its job: clear an objective, pin a monster, threaten a support hero or force the opponent to screen. If the move accomplishes none of those, keep the model positioned to threaten two destinations next turn.

Trade units, not just wounds
Fyreslayers are most effective when a unit’s death creates a favorable exchange. An infantry unit that holds an objective for one extra turn, protects a hero and forces an enemy charge may have done its job even if it does not survive. Measure success by points and board control, not only by remaining wounds.
Foot heroes or Magmadroth heroes?
Compare the options by role, not by model size. A foot hero is easier to hide, usually leaves more points for infantry and can support a broad objective network. A Magmadroth hero offers mobility, a monster threat and a larger concentration of attacks, but is harder to conceal and consumes more of the army’s budget.

Do not use the September 2025 battle-profile values as current costs. That document listed the Auric Runefather on Magmadroth at 320 points, the Auric Runesmiter on Magmadroth at 280 points and the Auric Runeson on Magmadroth at 250 points. The 2026 seasonal material states that points have changed, but does not provide a complete current Fyreslayer table here. Check the latest official points document for the battlepack you are playing.
Common mistakes and fixes
- Spending the first rune immediately: wait until the effect changes movement, survival or a kill.
- Sending a Magmadroth alone: coordinate its charge with infantry, prayers or another threat so the opponent cannot isolate it.
- Building only for damage: retain enough units to score objectives after the first exchange.
- Using old points or tactics: verify the current season’s downloads; the September 2025 profiles and April 2024 tactic explainer are not automatically current.
- Treating seasonal rules as permanent: Seeing Red, rage dice, Marks of Vulcatrix and Vulkyn Gifts belong to the Scourge of Aqshy rules context unless a later pack carries them forward.
What to check before a game
- Confirm the battlepack, season, points document and current FAQ.
- Mark which rune you are most likely to need in each of the first three battle rounds.
- Choose a formation whose trigger matches your actual units and scoring plan.
- Identify which Magmadroth, if any, is responsible for each flank or objective.
- Read the current battle tactics and remove any that your list cannot realistically complete.
- During play, ask whether each rune or mounted activation improves your score, survival or target removal before committing it.
Bottom line
Fyreslayers reward deliberate aggression. Their runes create short timing windows, Magmadroths provide mobility and monster pressure, and battle tactics turn those tools into additional points when they are planned alongside the primary objectives. Build around the job your army must perform, spend one rune per round only when it changes that job, and verify every seasonal rule and point value in the current battlepack.
