Fossils reveal early animal evolution through more than skeletons: body impressions show form, tracks and burrows record movement and behavior, and chemical traces can offer clues to identity and diet. Read together with the rocks that preserve them, these different records show animal-like bodies and increasingly complex activity before the Cambrian diversification—while also explaining why that diversification can look more abrupt in fossils than it may have been in life.
What counts as fossil evidence?
A fossil may preserve an organism, evidence of what it did, or a chemical remnant of its biology. These categories answer different questions, and none gives a complete picture by itself.

The geological setting is part of the evidence, not just a date attached to a fossil. A site that preserves soft tissue can reveal organisms that are missing from a site where only hard parts survive.
What evidence shows that animals existed before the Cambrian explosion?
The Ediacaran Period preceded the Cambrian and includes a diverse fossil record, much of it made up of soft-bodied forms unlike familiar living animals. Some Ediacaran organisms remain difficult to classify. Still, body fossils, seafloor traces, and chemical evidence together support animal interpretations and increasingly complex behavior before the Cambrian diversification.

Body impressions and compressions
Dickinsonia, a large, soft-bodied Ediacaran fossil, is known from impressions. Chemical evidence has been interpreted as supporting its status as an animal, but its precise evolutionary placement is not settled. A 2018 study reported ancient steroid evidence for its animal identity; the finding informs classification, but does not by itself establish a specific lineage. PubMed: “Ancient steroids establish the Ediacaran fossil Dickinsonia as one of the earliest animals”.
Tracks and burrows
Trace fossils can preserve evidence of an animal even when its body did not fossilize. The Smithsonian describes burrows near the end of the Ediacaran as evidence that worm-like animals were excavating the seafloor. Such traces establish activity and behavior; they do not necessarily identify the burrow-maker as a particular modern animal group. Chemical traces of feeding
Kimberella is an Ediacaran animal often described as mollusc-like and associated with grazing tracks. The Natural History Museum summarizes chemical evidence as consistent with an internal gut and feeding on algae or bacteria, while noting that not every chemical trace can be identified with certainty. Its possible affinities remain debated, so “mollusc-like” is a comparison, not a settled classification. Natural History Museum: “Evidence of the world’s oldest meal may have been discovered”.
How did an unusual Ediacaran deposit change the picture?
In an April 2026 report, the Natural History Museum described more than 700 fossils from Jiangchuan, in Yunnan, China, dated to 554–539 million years ago. The assemblage includes forms previously known only from Cambrian rocks, along with early bilaterians, possible comb jellies, and possible early relatives of deuterostomes. These proposed affinities are interpretations, not settled taxonomic facts. Natural History Museum: “The origins of complex life pushed back to before the Cambrian”.

The importance of Jiangchuan is not only which organisms may be present, but how they were preserved. Carbon-rich films retain anatomical detail, including feeding structures, digestive systems, and organs associated with movement—features rarely visible in many other Ediacaran deposits. Associate Professor Ross Anderson, a co-author of the study at Oxford University Museum of Natural History, said the apparent absence of complex animal groups from other Ediacaran sites may reflect preservation differences rather than true biological absence. The deposit therefore offers a way to test whether some gaps in the record are gaps in preservation.
Why does the fossil record make evolution look sudden?
Fossilization is selective. Soft-bodied animals are less likely to leave recognizable remains than organisms with hard parts, and even soft tissues that are preserved may be too incomplete to identify. A missing fossil can therefore mean that an organism was absent, or simply that the conditions needed to preserve and discover it were not met.

Differences in preservation can make two sites of similar age appear to contain different communities. The Cambrian record includes a greater abundance and diversity of recognizable animals, including groups with hard parts and more active ecological roles. As a result, the fossil record makes diversification especially visible, even though evidence for animal life and behavior reaches back into the Ediacaran.
The word “explosion” describes a rapid radiation visible in fossils, not animals appearing from nowhere in a single instant. The Natural History Museum describes the Cambrian as spanning about 539–485 million years ago and says the explosive phase is thought to have lasted about its first 20 million years. A 2019 synthesis instead emphasizes successive radiations extending from the late Ediacaran into the early Paleozoic, describing a rapid increase in animal diversity and abundance between approximately 540 and 520 million years ago. These accounts use different time spans to describe related patterns; neither implies that every modern animal phylum began at precisely the same moment. Geological boundary dates also vary slightly among sources and timescales. For example, the Smithsonian gives the Cambrian as 541–485 million years ago. That difference is a matter of dating convention and should not be mistaken for evidence that the fossil sequence itself changed. Fossils reveal ecological change as well as new body forms. Hard parts make many animals easier to recognize in the record; burrowing alters the seafloor, and active feeding leaves traces of interactions among organisms. Taken together, these changes point to ecosystems with increasingly varied ways of moving, feeding, and affecting the environment.
Trilobites offer a useful example of how a richer Cambrian fossil record can help scientists study anatomical change through time. The Natural History Museum reports that they appear with substantial diversity around 521 million years ago and summarizes research suggesting a short early burst in the evolution of their features, followed by a more stable rate. That pattern concerns trilobite feature evolution; it should not be treated as a timetable for all animal life. Natural History Museum: “The Cambrian Period: How animals exploded onto the scene”.

Scientists distinguish direct observations from interpretations. An impression directly records a shape; identifying the organism as an animal is an inference. A burrow directly records an excavation; naming its maker is a further inference. Chemical traces can strengthen an interpretation, but they do not automatically settle taxonomy.
- What was preserved? A body, a trace, a chemical signal, or some combination?
- How was it preserved? Could the process retain the anatomical feature or behavior being discussed?
- What is its age and setting? Geological context makes comparisons meaningful.
- Which claims are direct and which are inferred? Keep observations distinct from proposed identity, diet, or ancestry.
- How certain is the classification? Enigmatic Ediacaran fossils may not fit familiar modern body plans, and their proposed relationships remain hypotheses.
Body fossils, trace fossils, chemical evidence, and geological context do not always point to the same level of certainty. Their value lies in combining evidence that captures different parts of the story—not in expecting one fossil to provide a complete account.
