Scientists estimate the age of prehistoric remains by combining the order of rock layers with numeric dates from suitable rocks or minerals. They often cannot date a fossil-bearing sedimentary rock directly, so they date volcanic ash or rock nearby and use the layers’ positions to place the fossil in an older-to-younger sequence. The resulting age is an evidence-based estimate; it is not automatically the exact age of the fossil itself.
What does it mean to date a fossil?
“How old is it?” sounds like a question about a specimen, but geologists may be answering a more precise one: when was the surrounding layer deposited, when did a nearby mineral form, or when did an organism die? Those events can be related, but they are not always the same event.
Many fossils are preserved in sedimentary rock, formed as particles carried by water or wind settle and accumulate. The particles in a layer may have formed long before they were deposited, so measuring their age would not necessarily reveal when the fossil was buried. A volcanic ash bed is different: minerals in the ash formed during an eruption and may be suitable for radiometric dating. The fossil’s position relative to that bed can then constrain its age.
Two broad approaches work together. Relative dating establishes which event or layer came first; numeric dating estimates elapsed time using radioactive decay in suitable material. The National Park Service (NPS) distinguishes these roles: relative dating establishes the order of geologic events but cannot establish how long ago they happened (NPS, “Geologic Timescale, Geologic Dating Techniques, and Numeric Ages”).

How relative dating orders fossils and layers
Sediment commonly builds up in layers. In an undisturbed sequence, a lower layer was deposited before the layers above it. Fossils in those layers can therefore be assigned an older-to-younger order even if no one knows their calendar ages. This principle is useful when researchers need to establish the sequence of fossils or geological events at a site.
Relative dating can also connect locations. Geologists compare rock layers and distinctive fossil assemblages to correlate sedimentary sequences across separate sites. If the same recognizable sequence occurs in different places, that can help place fossils from those locations into a shared chronology. Correlation extends the ordering information; it does not by itself turn that order into an age in years.
The key limitation is straightforward: “older than” and “younger than” are not numeric ages. A fossil below another in an undisturbed sequence is generally older, but relative position alone cannot say whether the difference is thousands or millions of years. Numeric dating is needed to estimate elapsed time.

Some atoms are radioactive: their parent isotopes decay into daughter products at predictable rates. A half-life is the time required for half of a radioactive parent isotope to decay. If a suitable mineral contains measurable parent and daughter isotopes, scientists can use their amounts to estimate when the mineral formed or when a later geological event reset the isotope system.

The clock belongs to the material and the event recorded by that isotope system—not automatically to a fossil found nearby. For example, a date from a mineral in volcanic ash estimates when that ash formed. The fossil’s age is inferred from its relationship to the ash and surrounding strata.
Different isotope pairs are suited to different materials and geological histories. The NPS lists uranium-lead dating in zircon, potassium-argon dating in volcanic rocks and minerals, rubidium-strontium dating in rock-forming minerals, and samarium-neodymium dating in old materials and metamorphic rocks (NPS, “Radiometric Age Dating,” last updated October 3, 2018).
| Method or isotope pair | Material identified in the sources | What the date relates to | Half-life or useful range stated by NPS |
|---|---|---|---|
| Carbon-14 | Previously living material | When the organism died, estimated from the carbon-14 remaining after it stopped replenishing it | Half-life: 5,730 years; effective dating range: 100 to 50,000 years (NPS, 2018) |
| Potassium-40 to argon-40 | Volcanic rocks and minerals; volcanic tuff can be used | Time since the dated volcanic material cooled or formed, depending on the sample and geological history | Half-life: 1.25 billion years (NPS, 2018) |
| Uranium-238 to lead-206 | Zircon is listed as a material for uranium-lead dating | Time recorded by the dated mineral | Half-life: 4.5 billion years (NPS, 2018) |
| Rubidium-strontium | Rock-forming minerals | Depends on the dated material and geological event | Half-life and effective range: not stated on the cited NPS page |
| Samarium-neodymium | Old materials and metamorphic rocks | Depends on the dated material and geological event | Half-life and effective range: not stated on the cited NPS page |
The figures in this table are published by the NPS in 2018; they describe isotope clocks or the effective carbon-14 range, not a guaranteed age range for every specimen or laboratory result. Method suitability depends on the sample and the question being asked. The American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) describes potassium-argon dating of volcanic tuff adjacent to fossils: as the ash cools, potassium-40 decays to argon, and isotope measurements indicate elapsed time since the tuff formed (AMNH, “Different Techniques for Dating Fossils”).

Why researchers often date rock near a fossil
Sedimentary rocks are assembled from grains that may predate the layer containing them. A grain can have formed in one place, been transported, and then been deposited with other material. As a result, a date on such a grain may speak to its earlier formation rather than the later deposition of the fossil-bearing layer. This makes many sedimentary rocks difficult to date directly with methods designed for minerals formed in igneous rocks.

Volcanic ash can provide a more useful time marker. If a fossil-bearing layer sits between datable volcanic ash beds, the dates of those beds and their positions can bracket the layer. The fossil must be younger than the dated material below it and older than the dated material above it, assuming the sequence is intact and the layers are correctly interpreted. The bracket narrows the possible age without claiming that either ash bed is the fossil’s exact age.
If a suitable ash or volcanic layer occurs only above or only below the fossil-bearing strata, it still provides a one-sided constraint when its relationship to the layer is clear. The strength of the estimate depends on the geological context and how well the dated material is tied to the fossil layer. A result from adjacent rock should therefore be described as constraining the fossil’s age, not as a direct measurement of the specimen.
A simple example of a bracket
Imagine a fossil in a sedimentary layer between two volcanic ash beds. A laboratory estimates numeric ages for minerals in both ash beds. Stratigraphy establishes that the lower ash was deposited before the fossil-bearing sediment and the upper ash after it. Together, those observations place the fossil-bearing layer between the two dated events. No particular numerical age follows unless the ash samples have actual measurements, and the fossil may not have been alive at either ash event.
When carbon-14 can—and cannot—date remains
Living organisms take in carbon, including carbon-14. After an organism dies, it no longer replenishes its carbon-14; the remaining isotope decays. Measuring the carbon-14 in suitable once-living material can therefore estimate when the organism died. The NPS gives carbon-14 a half-life of 5,730 years and an effective dating range of 100 to 50,000 years (NPS, 2018; Radiometric Age Dating).

That range makes radiocarbon useful for relatively young organic remains, not for most very ancient fossils. A dinosaur fossil far older than the effective carbon-14 window cannot be dated with carbon-14 in the way a much younger organic sample can. For older fossils, researchers instead rely on suitable isotope systems in surrounding volcanic material or minerals, combined with the fossil’s stratigraphic position.
Radiocarbon also answers a particular question: it estimates the death of the organism represented by the dated biological material. A result from nearby organic material is not automatically the death date of a different fossil. As with any method, the identity and context of the sample matter.

A fossil-age estimate is built by connecting observations that answer different parts of the problem. A simplified sequence of reasoning looks like this:
- Establish the stratigraphic sequence. Record which sedimentary layers contain fossils and whether the sequence appears undisturbed. Lower layers generally predate upper layers in an undisturbed succession.
- Identify datable material. Determine whether the fossil itself, nearby organic remains, volcanic ash, or a mineral in surrounding rock is appropriate for an isotope method. The material determines which clock can be used.
- Choose a clock that fits the material and question. Carbon-14 applies to suitable once-living material in its effective range. Potassium-argon may date suitable volcanic material; other isotope pairs are used with appropriate minerals and geological events.
- Relate the numeric date to the fossil layer. Decide whether the measured age refers to the organism’s death, a mineral’s formation, volcanic cooling, or another recorded event. Use stratigraphy to determine how that event constrains the fossil.
- Report the estimate with its limits. State what was dated and how its position relates to the fossil. Include analytical uncertainty when it is available, and avoid turning a rounded or indirect age into an exact age for the specimen.
This reasoning keeps the evidence chain visible. A numeric result can be precise for the dated mineral while the fossil’s age remains an indirect estimate because it is assigned through nearby layers. Conversely, a clear relative sequence can establish the order of fossils even when a numeric date is unavailable.

What can complicate an age estimate?
Dating methods require appropriate samples and an interpretable geological history. A mineral’s isotope system records its formation or a later reset; if the history is more complicated than assumed, interpreting the measured age becomes harder. Likewise, a sample that is contaminated or a rock sequence that has been disturbed may not represent the simple relationship between layer and fossil that a straightforward bracket requires.
Fossils can also be reworked: older fossil material may be eroded from an earlier deposit and incorporated into younger sediment. In that case, the fossil’s biological age and the age of its final burial differ. This is a general interpretive caution, not a claim about any particular specimen. Researchers evaluate sample condition, stratigraphy, and geological context before treating a date as a constraint on a fossil.
Finally, a reported number should not be read without its uncertainty and scope. Analytical precision or error belongs with a numeric age when reported. The age of a dated ash bed, mineral, or organic sample is not interchangeable with the exact age of a fossil beside it; the relationship must be explained.
How to read a published fossil age
When a source says a fossil is a certain age, look for what the number actually describes. Was the fossil-bearing sediment directly dated, or was a mineral in volcanic ash above or below it measured? Is the date an estimate of an organism’s death, the formation of a mineral, or the cooling of volcanic material? Does the reported age include analytical uncertainty, and is the layer sequence intact?
The clearest accounts distinguish three things: the dated sample, the event recorded by the dating method, and the inference about the fossil. A date measured on a nearby volcanic layer can be strong evidence for the timing of a fossil-bearing deposit while still being an indirect constraint. Relative dating contributes the order; radiometric dating contributes elapsed time for a suitable material; geology links the two.
