Forums and review sites should manage user-generated content (UGC) first as a community-quality responsibility and then describe it accurately to Google. Moderate spam and abuse, make it easy to report problems, keep useful public discussions accessible, and use structured data that matches the page. Markup can make a page eligible for a search feature; it cannot guarantee indexing, rankings, or a rich result.
Start with moderation, not markup
Google treats spammy forum posts and blog comments as user-generated spam, even when a site operator did not write or knowingly submit them. A markup change cannot make spam acceptable or substitute for a process to address it. See Google’s user-generated spam guidance.
Build a practical workflow around reviewing and removing spam, abuse, and other policy-violating contributions. Put a clear reporting mechanism where users can find it, and ensure reports reach someone who can act on them. Those steps also matter for Google’s specialized UGC Fresh Data Program, which explicitly calls for active moderation and reporting.

For ordinary Search, focus on useful pages that Google can access and understand. Avoid blocking intended public discussions with robots.txt, a noindex directive, or a login requirement if you want Google to crawl them. Use stable URLs and make sure the page visibly contains the content represented in its markup. Accessibility and valid structured data do not guarantee that Google will index a page or show a special result.

When the UGC Fresh Data Program may fit
Google describes the UGC Fresh Data Program as a specialized option for platforms that meet its content, audience, and technical criteria—not a general requirement for every forum. Its stated criteria include high UGC volume, a significant audience, public and stable dedicated URLs without login or paywall barriers, creator attribution through a public profile, and active moderation. Applicants must also be able to implement secure OAuth 2.0 API authentication and strictly validated JSON-LD, with on-page schema markup across URLs. Google asks for content to be sent as fresh as possible, ideally within minutes, and engagement counters to be updated within 72 hours of creation. Choose markup to match the page
Use the content’s actual shape and authorship to decide which structured data, if any, fits. Google’s forum markup guide states: “Does your forum follow a question and answer pattern? Use Q&A markup instead.”

For general discussions
DiscussionForumPosting is intended for user-generated forum discussions, such as community threads and replies. Describe the user posts actually on the page, including the full post or response text present there. For a page centered on one discussion, identify that discussion as the main entity; on a list of posts, do not incorrectly label one item as the page’s main entity.

There is a specific exception for a post represented on another page by an external URL. Comments likewise need an author, publication date, and text, image, or video representation. Google recommends linking an author URL to the creator’s profile when available. The guide excludes publisher-authored articles with comments and user product reviews from this markup type.

For reviews and ratings
Use review markup only when the page’s visible content supports it and the reviews meet Google’s rules. Reviews should reflect genuine user experience. Do not use fake reviews or reviews based on experiences the reviewer did not have; disclose incentives clearly and prominently. Do not combine ratings taken from other websites into your own aggregate rating. For local businesses and organizations, a business’s own pages are ineligible for star review features when that business controls the reviews. Ratings must come directly from users; human editors must not create or compile the rating. See Google’s review snippet guidelines.
Do not use DiscussionForumPosting to label product reviews. Forum markup and review snippet markup describe different kinds of content, and the structured data should follow the relevant feature guidance.

Keep user-submitted links from becoming a spam channel
Google identifies optimized links in forum comments or signatures as an example of link spam. Avoid encouraging keyword-rich signatures or allowing profile and comment links to become a way to manipulate search rankings. For paid advertising or sponsorship links, Google says to qualify links with rel="nofollow" or rel="sponsored". See Google’s link spam policy.
Distinguish user reviews from Google’s Reviews System
Google’s Reviews System assesses first-party, standalone editorial review content—for example, an article offering analysis, recommendations, or comparisons. It does not assess third-party customer reviews that users post in a product or service page’s review section. Google says the system primarily evaluates pages, though a site with substantial review content may see broader evaluation. This system is distinct from review snippet structured data, which describes qualifying reviews and ratings for a possible search appearance. See Google’s Reviews System documentation.

Structured data must be a truthful representation of content readers can see; it should not describe hidden, irrelevant, or misleading material. Follow both Google’s general structured-data policies and the specific requirements for the feature you want. Google states: “Google does not guarantee that your structured data will show up in search results, even if your page is marked up correctly according to the Rich Results Test.” Review the general structured data guidelines, test for technical issues with the Rich Results Test, and use URL Inspection to see how Google accesses a page. Monitor Search Console where applicable.
