Fortnite no longer uses its former color-and-tag rarity system to classify cosmetic quality: Epic retired it with v29.20. Series labels such as Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series remain, but they serve a different purpose. Styles are variations of individual cosmetics, and you can inspect a pack item’s available styles by selecting it in the Locker and choosing Edit.
What happened to Fortnite skin rarity?
Fortnite’s old cosmetic rarity labels—color tiers and quality names inspired by Battle Royale—are no longer the game’s current classification system. In its April 9, 2024 announcement about Shop and Locker changes, Epic Games said it retired that system with version 29.20. Epic Support likewise identifies v29.20 as the point when the previous color-and-tag system was removed.
That change affects how cosmetics are labeled; it does not mean the cosmetics themselves disappeared. If you remember seeing a skin described by one of the former rarity colors or names, that description refers to the retired system. It should not be treated as a current, universal measure of a skin’s value, quality, availability, or power. Fortnite cosmetics are cosmetic items, and the old quality labels are not a way to infer gameplay advantages.

In particular, the continued use of Series names does not mean those labels are new rarity tiers. They identify a different kind of grouping.

How Series labels differ from the old rarity tiers
Epic says Series labels remain after the retirement of color tiers. It names Icon Series and Gaming Legends Series as examples. These labels help players find or recognize cosmetics associated with a named grouping or identity. They do not revive the former color-and-quality system.

The practical distinction is straightforward: a Series label tells you what named grouping a cosmetic belongs to, while the old rarity label was part of a retired color-coded quality scheme. Seeing a Series name therefore does not tell you that an item has a particular former rarity, and the retired colors should not be used to interpret the Series label.
What a Fortnite style is
Epic Support defines styles this way: “Styles are customizable or unlockable variations for cosmetic items such as skins, back blings, gliders and pickaxes.” A style is tied to an individual cosmetic. It may change how that item looks without being a separate cosmetic in the sense of a different outfit or piece of equipment.
The important word is or: styles can be customizable, or they can require unlocking. That means there is no single rule that applies to every alternate appearance. One item may offer choices you can select, while another may have a variation that must first be earned or otherwise unlocked. The item’s own available options and unlock requirements determine what you can use.

Styles are also distinct from availability. A style is a variation of an item you have access to; it does not, by itself, tell you whether the underlying cosmetic is currently for sale, can return to the Shop, or will be included in a future offer. Those are separate questions.
How to see styles included with a pack
If you received or purchased a pack and want to check which styles are available for one of its items, Epic’s support instructions are to inspect the item in your Locker. Use the item’s own Edit screen rather than assuming every included variation appears automatically when you equip it.
- Open your Locker.
- Select the outfit, back bling, glider, pickaxe, or other included cosmetic you want to inspect.
- Choose Edit.
- Review the available styles shown for that item and select one you can use.
This check is item-specific: select each pack cosmetic whose variations you want to inspect. If a style is not available to select, do not assume that every style associated with similar cosmetics works the same way. Epic describes styles as customizable or unlockable, so the item’s own state and requirements matter.

Do skins and other cosmetics all have the same styles?
No universal style set applies across Fortnite cosmetics. Epic’s definition covers several kinds of items—outfits, back blings, gliders, and pickaxes—but it does not say that each item has alternate styles, that every item has the same number of styles, or that variations use the same unlock method. The Locker’s Edit screen is the useful place to check what is available for a particular item.

It helps to separate three questions when looking at a cosmetic:
- What is the item? For example, an outfit or a back bling.
- What variations does it offer? These are its styles, if it has any.
- How do I access each variation? It may be selectable, or it may require unlocking, depending on the item.
Keeping these questions separate prevents a common misunderstanding: owning the base cosmetic does not establish that every possible variation is already selectable. Conversely, seeing a style listed as part of a Shop offer does not establish that the item is currently available to buy.
Can Battle Pass skins return to the Shop?
Epic’s August 7, 2024 announcement changed its policy for future Fortnite Battle Pass items: they might be offered for purchase in the Shop at least 18 months after the relevant Battle Pass expires. The wording matters. “Might” describes a possibility, not a scheduled return or a promise that every past Battle Pass cosmetic will be sold again.
Epic says Shop selection depends on multiple factors and that no item is guaranteed to return. So the 18-month period is not a countdown to a guaranteed sale. It is the earliest timing described in that announcement for possible Shop availability of future Battle Pass items, not a commitment about any particular skin. The policy also does not establish when, or whether, an individual item will appear.

This distinction is useful when evaluating claims that a Battle Pass outfit is “coming back.” Unless Epic announces a specific return, the policy supports only the possibility that qualifying future Battle Pass items may be offered after the stated interval. It does not support a definite prediction for a named cosmetic.

Not necessarily. Epic says the number of alternate styles included with an item in the Shop may vary. Therefore, an item returning to the Shop does not automatically mean that every style associated with it in another context will be part of that offer.
Epic identifies one specific exception: if the item has a LEGO Style, that style always comes with the item in the Shop. That statement concerns the LEGO Style when one exists; it is not a general guarantee that every other alternate style is included. Check the details of the actual offer rather than inferring its contents from an older version of the item.

There are two separate availability decisions to keep in mind: whether the cosmetic returns at all, and which alternate styles are included if it does. Epic’s policy does not guarantee the first, and it says the number of included alternate styles may vary on the second.

How ranked cosmetic styles work—and what to verify
Epic Support guidance indexed for ranked cosmetic styles says seasonal styles unlock based on the highest rank reached in compatible ranked modes, and that Arena does not count. This is a broad description, not a reliable current list of every eligible mode. Because mode eligibility can be season-specific, check Epic’s current guidance for the season and cosmetic in question before relying on a particular mode.
Rank-themed cosmetics can also have item-specific behavior. Epic Support gives the example of certain rank-displaying outfits showing the highest rank reached in the season the outfit was obtained, citing Odyssey from Chapter 5 Season 2. That example should not be generalized to every ranked style or every outfit displaying a rank. It does not establish that all such cosmetics update dynamically throughout a season.
When checking a ranked cosmetic, distinguish the condition for unlocking a style from how a rank is displayed on an outfit. A seasonal unlock rule and an outfit’s display behavior are not necessarily the same feature. Confirm the relevant item’s instructions and current season details rather than assuming one ranked cosmetic works like another.
Cosmetic age-rating restrictions are not rarity
Fortnite has also had rules about which cosmetics can be equipped in islands with particular age ratings. Epic’s November 20, 2023 announcement on cosmetic gating addressed compatibility with islands and age ratings, not cosmetic rarity or style classification.
That is a separate issue from the v29.20 retirement of color tiers. A restriction on using an item in a particular island concerns where the cosmetic can be equipped; a style concerns an alternate variation of an item; and the former rarity colors concerned the now-retired quality labeling system. Do not use an island’s age rating or a cosmetic-gating restriction to infer an item’s rarity or style availability. Epic’s 2023 announcement described the situation at that time, so its historical counts should not be read as current totals.
