Fortnite Creative and Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) are two different ways to build Fortnite islands. Creative is an in-game creation workflow; UEFN is a separate editor for Fortnite projects with additional tools, including Verse capabilities that are not available in Creative. Both workflows use Creator Portal for the final release, review and management of an island. Eligible members of Epic’s Fortnite Developer Program may receive engagement payouts, but those payments come from a shared pool and are not a guaranteed amount per player.
Fortnite Creative and UEFN: the essential difference
Fortnite Creative runs inside Fortnite. You enter a Creative island, place devices and assets, configure rules and test the result in the same game environment. It is designed for building and iterating without leaving Fortnite.
UEFN is a separate editor built for Fortnite projects. It provides a broader authoring environment and supports capabilities such as Verse, Epic’s programming language for Fortnite experiences, that are not available in the Creative workflow. UEFN is therefore an extension path for creators who need more control over logic, assets, level construction or project organization.
The tools are related, but they are not interchangeable editors. A Creative island remains a Creative project until you import it into UEFN. After import, editing takes place in UEFN rather than continuing as the same project in the original Creative workflow.

How a Fortnite island moves from idea to release
The creation process has three distinct stages: build and test, prepare a private project version, and submit a release through Creator Portal. Publishing is not the same as saving a project locally or making a test version available to your team.
1. Build and iterate
Start in Creative if you want an in-game workflow, or start in UEFN if the project needs its broader editing and scripting capabilities. Playtest repeatedly while you adjust the layout, devices, rules, performance and player experience. A project is not ready for release merely because it loads successfully; you also need the information and media required by Creator Portal.
2. Prepare a private version in UEFN
For a UEFN project, Epic’s publishing instructions require you to launch a session and calculate memory. That process produces a private version and memory information for the project. The private version is what you select for release preparation. UEFN itself does not send a project directly to the public Fortnite ecosystem.
3. Create the release in Creator Portal
Creator Portal is the handoff point for both workflows. Creative creators begin publishing from their island settings and then complete the release in the portal. UEFN creators select the private version prepared by the editor and create a release there.

Can you move a Creative island into UEFN?
Yes. Epic documents importing an existing Creative island into UEFN so you can use UEFN tools and features, including Verse functionality unavailable in Creative. Treat the operation as a project conversion rather than a harmless copy.
What does not transfer
- Player data: player data does not transfer into the UEFN project.
- Unsupported devices: devices that UEFN does not support will not import.
- Editing location: after import, the island is edited in UEFN.
Before importing, record any device-dependent behavior and decide how you will rebuild features that do not carry over. Test the converted project before you replace a working publishing workflow.
Can an import be undone?
Epic provides a way to revert an imported island through Creator Portal, subject to the conditions in its current instructions. Because the available revert path and conditions can change, check the portal’s current guidance before starting a conversion and keep a known-good version of the original project.

How to publish a UEFN or Creative island
Publishing requires more than uploading a map. The release form combines a specific project version with public-facing information, ratings, media, attribution and a visibility choice.

- Finish a testable build. Verify the island in playtests and resolve failures before selecting a release version.
- For UEFN, launch a session and calculate memory. This creates the private version and memory information that Creator Portal uses for release preparation.
- Open Creator Portal. Choose the project and select the private version you intend to release. Creative users reach this workflow from their island settings.
- Create a release. Enter the island’s public game details, such as its title, description and other required presentation information.
- Complete the IARC rating questionnaire. The questionnaire supplies the age and content-rating information required for distribution.
- Add promotional media. Attach the required images or other promotional assets and check that they accurately represent the island.
- Provide attribution. Include relevant attribution information for content that requires it.
- Choose visibility. Set the release visibility according to whether it should remain private, be available to a limited audience or be submitted for public availability.
- Submit for moderation. Confirm the release and send it for review under Fortnite Developer Rules.
What moderation checks
Epic describes a two-stage review. Moderators first check metadata and submitted assets. If that stage finds no issue, they review the island in-game. A correct build can still be delayed or rejected because of its description, images, rating answers, attribution or rule compliance, so check the complete submission rather than only the map itself.
Why Creator Portal matters
Creator Portal is the central management layer for Fortnite islands. Epic describes it as the only way to publish islands and control a creator’s profile page and presence in the Fortnite ecosystem. It is also used to organize teams, review project performance, manage profiles and access monetization information.
This means the editor and the portal have different jobs. UEFN prepares and tests the project; Creator Portal packages the selected version, collects the public release information, submits it to moderation and manages the resulting island presence. Saving a UEFN project or making a private test version does not publish it.
Who can join the Fortnite Developer Program?
Publishing and monetization are connected to Epic’s Fortnite Developer Program. Epic’s documentation states that applicants must be at least 18 years old and meet one of the program’s listed purchase-based requirements. Those criteria are operational rules, not permanent technical properties of Creative or UEFN, so verify the current enrollment page before applying.

Support-A-Creator membership by itself does not make a person eligible for engagement payouts. Epic says creators must also join the Fortnite Developer Program to qualify for that payout system. Meeting the age and enrollment conditions gives a creator a chance to receive payouts; it does not promise that a particular island will earn money.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How Fortnite island creators get paid
Engagement Payouts are a pool, not a per-player rate
Epic says that 40% of eligible net revenue from the Fortnite Item Shop and related real-money purchases is made available as Engagement Payouts. The pool is distributed using measured engagement and related signals, so there is no universal payment such as “one dollar per player” or a fixed amount per visit.
The documented formula includes:
- Active playtime on an island.
- How well the island retains players.
- Player playtime around Item Shop V-Bucks spending.
- Rewards associated with acquiring new and returning players.
Epic describes calculation on a monthly basis, with payout timing governed by the program’s terms. A large visit count alone does not establish an expected payment: the result depends on the pool for that period and how the island performs against the formula’s engagement measures.

Epic’s FAQ states that developers ordinarily earn 50% of the V-Bucks value from in-island transaction sales. It also lists a temporary 100% rate from January 9, 2026, through January 31, 2027. That is a time-limited term, so confirm the current FAQ before relying on it for a release or business forecast.

What creators should not assume
- UEFN does not automatically pay a creator simply because an island was built with it.
- Support-A-Creator status alone does not qualify a creator for Engagement Payouts.
- Engagement Payouts are not a guaranteed minimum, fixed rate or contractually promised amount for each player.
- A published island is still subject to moderation and Fortnite Developer Rules.
A practical workflow for choosing Creative or UEFN
Choose Creative first when
- You want to build and test entirely inside Fortnite.
- Your design can be implemented with the devices and assets available in the Creative workflow.
- You are prototyping an idea before deciding whether it needs a larger toolset.
Choose UEFN first when
- You need UEFN capabilities such as Verse.
- You are starting a project that requires the separate editor’s authoring and organization tools.
- You want to work with a project structure that is more suitable for advanced iteration and team production.
Import instead of rebuilding when
Your Creative island already contains valuable work and you have checked device compatibility, player-data implications and the available revert procedure. Importing can preserve a starting point, but it does not guarantee that every device or piece of state will arrive unchanged.
Troubleshooting common publishing problems
The project is ready in UEFN, but there is no public island
That is expected until you complete the Creator Portal release. Launch the session, calculate memory, select the resulting private version in Creator Portal and submit the release information for moderation.
An imported island behaves differently
Check for devices unsupported by UEFN and rebuild their functions with supported devices or UEFN logic. Player data will not transfer, so design any progression or saved-state behavior again rather than treating the import as a live-data migration.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
The submission is rejected or delayed
Review the public details, IARC answers, promotional media, attribution and Fortnite Developer Rules. Metadata and assets are checked before the in-island review, so a problem outside the playable map can stop the process.
You expected a payout but received none
Confirm that you are enrolled in the Fortnite Developer Program, not only Support-A-Creator, and that you meet the current age and purchase-based requirements. Then remember that Engagement Payouts depend on monthly pool distribution and measured engagement; publication or player visits alone do not guarantee payment.
Quick Recap
Release checklist
- Decide whether Creative or UEFN matches the project’s required capabilities.

- Open Creator Portal and select the intended version.
- Complete public details, the IARC questionnaire, promotional media and attribution.
- Set visibility and submit for moderation.
- Check current Developer Program eligibility before planning for payouts.
- Model Engagement Payouts as variable pool-based revenue, not a fixed per-player payment.
