Formula 1 strategy is a repeated decision process under uncertainty. Teams prepare tyre, fuel and pace scenarios months before a race, then continuously compare those plans with live timing, telemetry, tyre behaviour, weather, track position and rival actions. Artificial intelligence and machine-learning models can sort data, forecast outcomes and expose useful scenarios, but the public record describes them as decision support—not as an autonomous system that makes every pit call.
What an F1 strategy decision actually is
A strategy call chooses the action with the best expected race outcome from several imperfect options. The choices usually include when to pit, which tyre to fit, how long to extend a stint, whether to cover a rival’s stop, and how to react when weather or a safety-car period changes the race.
There is rarely a permanently correct answer. A plan that is fastest in a clean-air simulation may become inferior when a rival creates traffic, a tyre loses performance earlier than expected, rain reaches only part of the circuit, or a neutralisation reduces the time cost of a pit stop. Strategy therefore works as a loop: prepare scenarios, observe the race, update the estimates and choose again.

Formula 1’s explanation of the strategist’s role says teams begin sketching race plans well ahead of a weekend, especially for flyaway events. Historical race information helps establish likely tyre selections, stint patterns and the circuit questions that need answering. The preparation is not a single spreadsheet; it is a collection of assumptions that can be revised as practice and qualifying provide better evidence.

What goes into the pre-race plan
- Previous races and sessions at the circuit, including how quickly tyres have degraded and how easy it has been to overtake.
- Expected pace for each tyre compound and possible stint lengths.
- Fuel-use assumptions and the effect of carrying more or less fuel early in the race.
- Track-position consequences: traffic, pit-lane loss and the chance of emerging behind a slower car.
- Likely rival pace and the points at which a rival could make an undercut or overcut work.
- Weather, safety-car and red-flag possibilities that could change the value of stopping.
The detailed numbers are closely guarded. Formula 1 notes that teams protect information about tyre wear, fuel use and their decision matrices, and that team sizes differ. Public descriptions can show the shape of the process without revealing a constructor’s confidential thresholds.
How telemetry helps strategists read the race
Telemetry is information about how a car is operating. In strategy work it is interpreted alongside lap timing, track position, tyre behaviour, weather and rival pace rather than treated as an isolated score. The public sources do not enumerate every channel a particular team receives, its exact update frequency or the accuracy of its private models, so claims about a universal telemetry feed would be too broad.
In practical terms, live data helps answer questions such as whether a driver is maintaining expected pace, whether a tyre is fading, whether a car has clear air after a stop and whether a rival’s apparent speed is genuine or caused by traffic. Those observations update the assumptions used in the team’s race simulations.
Formula 1’s 2026 Strategy Insight announcement describes a public graphic that combines “live timing, telemetry and historical race data” with predictive analysis and historic modelling. The announcement is a description of a broadcast product, not a disclosure of each team’s private telemetry architecture. It nevertheless illustrates why telemetry matters: it supplies current evidence against which a pre-race plan can be tested.

Simulations compare scenarios; they do not remove uncertainty
Before and during a race, teams run simulations to compare plausible futures. Mercedes Head of Strategy Rosie Wait described the process this way: “We pull together simulations out of all of the data we have on the circuit, as well as what we know about our rivals’ pace to give us a picture of what will be the big questions for the weekend.” Her 2021 interview is an attributed example of a team process, not a claim that every constructor uses an identical structure today.
A simulation can estimate the race-time effect of stopping on different laps, extending a stint, or covering a rival. It can also show how sensitive a choice is to assumptions: a small change in degradation, traffic or rival pace may reverse the preferred option. Strategists therefore look at ranges and conditional outcomes rather than one guaranteed finishing order.
The questions a model is designed to expose
- Does stopping now gain enough tyre performance to offset pit-lane time and traffic?
- Can a driver extend the current stint without losing more time than a later stop would save?
- Would reacting to a rival protect track position, or merely place both cars in the same traffic?
- How much does a safety-car period reduce the cost of stopping?
- Is a weather forecast reliable enough to justify changing tyres before the track visibly changes?
How teams decide when to pit during the race
The pit window is a moving range, not a single magic lap. A team compares the expected time on the current tyre with the expected time after a stop, while accounting for traffic, rival behaviour and uncertainty.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Establish the baseline. The strategy group tracks actual lap times, tyre condition indicators, fuel state and the car’s position relative to rivals.
- Update the scenarios. New observations are fed into simulations for stopping now, stopping later and responding to each relevant rival.
- Check the track-position cost. A theoretically faster tyre is not useful if the car rejoins behind traffic or loses a battle it would otherwise win.
- Evaluate disruption. Safety cars, virtual safety cars, yellow flags, rain and changing grip can make the pit-lane time loss very different from the normal value.
- Communicate a recommendation. Strategists present the preferred option, alternatives and the conditions that would invalidate it to the senior decision-makers on the pit wall.
- Keep monitoring after the call. The result of a stop becomes new evidence for the next decision rather than proof that the original model was perfect.
Undercut and overcut: predicting a rival’s response
An undercut is an attempt to gain time by pitting before a rival, using faster tyres or clear air while the rival remains on an older set. An overcut does the opposite: the driver stays out while the rival stops, hoping that strong pace, traffic for the rival or a favourable safety-car timing makes the later stop more effective.

Teams model both options by combining their own expected lap times with an estimate of the rival’s pace, pit-lane loss and rejoin traffic. The calculation is conditional. If the rival’s out-lap is unusually slow, an undercut may work; if the rival emerges into clean air while the initiating car meets traffic, it may fail. The strategy group also considers whether a stop would surrender track position to a third car.
Formula 1’s 2026 Strategy Insight description specifically uses “responding to an undercut threat” as an example of a moment when strategy can evolve. That public explanation does not publish a universal undercut formula or a team’s internal trigger point.
Where AI and machine learning fit
AI is most useful here as an analytics and prediction layer. Machine-learning systems can process large historical datasets, identify relationships that are difficult to inspect manually and produce forecasts that strategists can compare with physics-based simulations and live observations. They can help organise information quickly, but a forecast still depends on the quality and relevance of its inputs.
Formula 1 has described AWS as its official cloud and machine-learning provider. Its 2018 announcement said the partnership would enhance race strategies, data-tracking systems and digital broadcasts through AWS services. A 2023 partnership account said the collaboration had launched 20 machine-learning-powered F1 Insights since 2018. Those were live-television insights for viewers, not 20 disclosed internal strategy systems used by teams.

The distinction matters. A broadcast graphic can explain why extending a stint or covering an undercut is interesting without exposing a constructor’s private model, data pipeline or decision thresholds. Public partner announcements also describe intended capabilities; they do not independently measure how much a tool improves race results.
Why humans still own the strategic call
In the documented accounts, humans retain strategic responsibility. Wait described a group that prepares recommendations through a strategy structure leading to senior leadership on the pit wall. That structure matters because a model may not know whether a sensor reading is trustworthy, whether a driver is comfortable with a tyre, or whether a developing incident will change the race before the next simulation finishes.
Human judgement also resolves conflicts between objectives. Protecting one car may compromise the other, an aggressive call may be worthwhile for points but not for championship risk, and a forecast with wide uncertainty may justify waiting for another lap. The available public sources do not establish that an AI system independently decides when a team pits.

Weather intelligence is another input, with a different owner
Weather is a changing input rather than a strategy answer by itself. Forecasts for precipitation, storms, heat and wind can alter tyre and safety assumptions, but teams must still judge how quickly conditions will affect grip and whether a stop is worth the time.

The FIA’s 2026 partnership announcement with Tomorrow.io concerns AI-enabled weather intelligence and risk assessments for FIA Race Control, including precipitation and storm forecasts and heat and wind assessments. That is evidence of decision support for race control. It is not proof that every constructor uses Tomorrow.io or the same weather models for its pit-wall calls.

A useful way to judge any strategy recommendation
Whether the recommendation comes from a machine-learning forecast, a simulation or an experienced strategist, the same questions make it easier to evaluate:
- Expected race time: Which option performs best across plausible rival-pace scenarios?
- Tyre and stint state: Is the current tyre still delivering, and how much useful life remains?
- Pit and track position: Where will the car rejoin, and which rivals or traffic groups will it encounter?
- Uncertainty: How sensitive is the result to weather, a safety car, changing grip or an inaccurate degradation estimate?
- Live confirmation: Do current observations support the model, or are they signalling that its assumptions are wrong?
- Driver and team judgement: Can the driver execute the plan, and does the call fit the wider championship and team objectives?
What public information still cannot tell you
No public source in this set provides a directly comparable statistic for telemetry volume, model accuracy, lap-time gain or pit-call success. Teams protect those details, and partner announcements are not independent performance audits. A headline saying that a system uses AI therefore should not be read as evidence that it wins a specific number of seconds or makes error-free calls.
A 2025 paper on deep-learning pit-stop decision support demonstrates that researchers are studying data-driven methods, but it is research rather than evidence that a Formula 1 team deployed that paper’s method. The practical lesson is to separate three things: a research prototype, a vendor’s described capability and a team’s verified race operation.
The bottom line for fans
F1 strategy is best understood as human-led decision-making augmented by computation. Historical data and simulations create a menu of plausible plans; telemetry and timing reveal what is happening now; machine-learning and predictive tools help estimate what could happen next; and strategists decide whether the evidence justifies changing course. That combination is why a pit call can look obvious in hindsight while being genuinely uncertain when it was made.
