Oxygenated, unsaturated forest mineral soils remove atmospheric methane when aerobic methanotrophic bacteria consume CH4 and oxidize it mainly to carbon dioxide and water. Whether a forest is a net methane sink depends on gas diffusion through soil pores, microbial activity, and competing methane production in oxygen-poor zones. Saturation, flooding, compaction, drought stress, nitrogen inputs, warming and disturbance can all weaken uptake or reverse the direction of exchange.
What it means for forest soil to remove methane
A soil is a methane sink when more methane moves from the atmosphere into the soil and is destroyed there than methane moves out of the soil. In a well-drained forest mineral soil, atmospheric methane enters air-filled pores along a concentration gradient. Aerobic methanotrophic bacteria then use methane as both an energy source and a carbon source. Their metabolism converts most of the CH4 to CO2 and water; a smaller fraction of the carbon becomes microbial biomass.
This is a biological filter rather than storage of unchanged methane. The methane molecule is removed from the atmosphere, but its carbon is generally released as carbon dioxide, so methane oxidation should not be confused with permanent carbon sequestration. The climate benefit comes primarily from eliminating methane, a much more powerful greenhouse gas per molecule than carbon dioxide over the usual accounting periods.

Methanotrophs thrive where oxygen is available. Methanogens, by contrast, are anaerobic microorganisms that produce methane while decomposing organic matter in oxygen-poor environments. Both groups can occupy different microsites in one soil profile. The measured soil-to-atmosphere flux is the net result of methane entering from the air, methanotrophic oxidation, methane generated below the oxygenated layer and methane transported back to the atmosphere.

That balance explains why calling every forest a permanent methane sink is inaccurate. A dry, porous upland soil can support strong uptake, while a saturated hollow, riparian margin or flooded forest floor can produce methane at the same time.
How methane gets to methane-eating microbes
Pore space is the first control
Atmospheric methane and oxygen move through connected air-filled pores. Water-filled pores slow gas movement dramatically because diffusion through water is much slower than diffusion through air. Bulk density and compaction also matter: compressed soil has fewer large, connected air pathways, so methane may not reach methanotrophs efficiently even when the surface appears dry.
The most influential soil properties therefore fall into two linked groups. The first controls transport: water-filled pore space, texture, structure, bulk density and compaction. The second controls biology: temperature, pH, nutrient supply, organic carbon, plant effects and the abundance and activity of methanotrophs and methanogens. The National Academies identifies gas diffusion and the biogeochemical factors regulating these microbes as the dominant controls on uptake.

Water balance can switch the direction of flux
Water balance is especially important in forest soils. Moderate drying can open air pathways in a soil that was previously too wet, allowing oxygen and methane to diffuse farther and temporarily increasing oxidation. Severe drought is different: it can reduce microbial activity, alter roots and fungi, collapse aggregates or leave methanotrophs physiologically stressed. The result of drying is therefore site-dependent rather than universally positive.
Persistent saturation blocks oxygen diffusion. Once oxygen is consumed, methanogens can become active in anaerobic layers and generate methane from organic substrates. If bubbles, roots or water movement provide a route upward, that methane can bypass the aerobic surface and make the forest floor a net source.

Environmental factors that change oxidation rates
Temperature
Temperature affects enzyme reactions, microbial growth and the supply of methane from deeper layers. Warming can increase methanotrophic activity when oxygen and methane are both available, but it can also accelerate decomposition and methanogenesis in wet, oxygen-limited soil. A warmer wetland-like microsite may therefore emit more methane even as a nearby well-drained microsite continues to consume it.
pH and nutrient status
Methanotroph communities differ in their tolerance of acidity and nutrient conditions. Soil pH influences which organisms are present and how efficiently they use methane. Nitrogen effects are not uniform. Nitrogen deposition or fertilizer often inhibits methanotrophy in nitrogen-rich soils, possibly by altering enzyme competition, ammonium processing or community composition. Nitrogen-poor systems can respond differently, so a single nitrogen rule cannot be applied to every forest.

Carbon, roots and plant communities
Organic carbon supplies fuel for the broader microbial community and for methanogens in anaerobic zones. Roots alter pore structure, release compounds, take up water and can transport gases through channels. Plant communities also influence shade, litter inputs and water use, all of which feed back on temperature and moisture. These effects mean that two soils with similar texture can have different methane fluxes under different vegetation.
Compaction and land-use history
Logging traffic, recreation, grazing, road construction and cultivation can compact soil, reduce macropores and limit atmospheric gas entry. Conversion from forest to agriculture commonly changes moisture, temperature, organic inputs and microbial communities at the same time. The physical and biological conditions that support methane uptake are generally weakened by sustained compaction and intensive disturbance, although the direction and size of change depend on the site.
Can a wet forest emit methane?
Yes. A forest can contain both methane-consuming and methane-producing areas, and a wet period can move the net balance toward emissions. Flooded depressions, waterlogged organic horizons, beaver-influenced areas, peat-forming soils and poorly drained valley bottoms may develop thick anoxic zones. Methanogens then produce methane, while the thin oxygenated surface layer oxidizes only part of it.

Why the surface does not always capture all methane
Methane can travel through saturated soil as dissolved gas, diffuse slowly through water, or move rapidly in bubbles. It can also use plant aerenchyma, the gas-conducting tissue found in some wetland plants, as a low-resistance pathway. When transport bypasses the aerobic zone, less methane is exposed to methanotrophs before reaching the atmosphere.

Seasonal reversals are possible
A site may consume methane during a dry, oxygenated season and emit it after heavy rain or prolonged inundation. Conversely, drainage can reduce methanogenesis and restore diffusion, although a newly drained soil may remain biologically and physically altered for years. Annual averages can hide these reversals, which is why measurements need to cover contrasting seasons and water levels.
How much methane do forest and mineral soils remove?
Global estimates differ because they use different definitions, geographic coverage and measurement methods. The following values should not be added together or treated as interchangeable.
| Estimate | What it represents | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| 18–40 Tg CH4 per year | Removal by methanotrophs in unsaturated, oxygenated soils | National Academies, 2023 estimate |
| About 5% of the global methane sink | Approximate contribution attributed to terrestrial soils in the cited global methane budget | National Academies, 2023 discussion of the Saunois et al. 2024 budget |
| 9–47 Tg CH4 per year | Global oxidation by aerobic mineral soils | Annual Reviews synthesis, 2018; broader mineral-soil estimate |
| 24.6–49.9 Tg CH4 per year | Uptake by tree surfaces in free-draining upland environments | Gauci et al., 2024, as reported by the National Academies; not a soil estimate |
A teragram is one million metric tonnes. The ranges reflect uncertainty in site coverage, hydrology, scaling and model assumptions. The tree-surface estimate belongs to a different forest compartment and cannot be combined with the soil ranges without matching boundaries and methods.
Soil uptake is only part of a forest methane budget
Methanotrophs and methanogens also live on tree stems, bark, branches and foliage. In some global assessments, methane uptake at tree surfaces is on the same order as uptake by soils in free-draining environments. Some tree types have also been reported to emit methane. A whole-forest estimate must therefore state whether it includes mineral soil, organic horizons, tree surfaces, standing water, litter and nearby streams.

This distinction matters when comparing a chamber measurement from a soil plot with an ecosystem measurement that covers trees and the air above them. A forest can have a strong soil sink while its total ecosystem exchange is smaller, larger or even positive after other compartments are included.
Why methane uptake may be changing
Drought, flooding and warming
Long-term climate changes alter the transport and biology that control oxidation. Repeated drought can improve diffusion during mild drying but suppress microbial activity during severe water stress. Intense rainfall and flooding reduce oxygen penetration and can activate methanogenesis. Warming changes reaction rates and water demand, so its effect depends on whether a site is oxygenated or water-limited.
A 2020 forest-ecosystem review cautioned that methane sinks may be overestimated because these interacting drivers are difficult to represent. A long-term PNAS study reported significant declines in methane uptake at forest sites in Baltimore, Maryland, and Hubbard Brook, New Hampshire, concluding that the soil sink may be declining in several regions. Those observations are important warnings, not a universal rate of decline for every forest.
Nitrogen deposition and fertilization
Added nitrogen can inhibit methanotrophy in nitrogen-rich soils. The response in nitrogen-poor soils can differ, and the effect may change with pH, moisture and the resident microbial community. Fertilizer trials or atmospheric-deposition maps should therefore be interpreted with local soil chemistry rather than extrapolated as a single global response.
Disturbance and management
Compaction, drainage, conversion, fire, harvesting and altered vegetation can change several controls at once. A management action that dries a wet microsite may reduce methane production, while the same action in an already dry upland may stress methanotrophs. Before-and-after comparisons need measurements of water-filled pore space, bulk density, temperature and soil chemistry, not methane concentration alone.

How scientists measure forest-soil methane exchange
Closed chambers
Plot-scale measurements commonly use a chamber sealed over a known soil area. Gas samples or continuous analyzers track the change in methane concentration over minutes, and the rate is converted to a flux per unit area. Good practice requires repeated collars, careful leak checks and sampling across seasons, moisture states and soil types. Chamber placement, collar depth, incubation time and disturbance of the surface can all influence the result.
Eddy covariance
Eddy-covariance systems measure turbulent methane exchange above a larger ecosystem footprint by combining high-frequency gas concentrations with vertical wind measurements. They capture spatially integrated exchange that chambers cannot, but the footprint changes with wind direction and atmospheric conditions. Forest structure, instrument height and data filtering must be reported to interpret the result.
Why numbers from different studies may disagree
Results are not directly comparable when one study samples only mineral soil and another includes organic horizons, tree stems or standing water. Season, soil depth, hydrologic status, chamber placement and analyzer precision also matter. A credible comparison matches the system boundary and method before comparing the numerical flux.
How to compare two forest sites
Use the following axes rather than comparing climate zone or tree species alone:
Quick Recap
| Comparison axis | Questions to ask | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrology | Is the soil unsaturated, seasonally wet or persistently waterlogged? | Controls oxygen diffusion and the opportunity for methanogenesis. |
| Soil structure | What are texture, bulk density, pore connectivity and compaction? | Determines how quickly methane and oxygen move. |
| Climate | How do temperature, drought and rainfall vary through the year? | Changes both microbial rates and water-filled pore space. |
| Chemistry | What are pH, mineral nitrogen, carbon stocks and deposition or fertilizer inputs? | Shapes methanotroph activity and competing pathways. |
| Biology | Which plants and methane-cycling microbes are present? | Roots, litter and community composition alter transport and metabolism. |
| History | Has the site been logged, cultivated, burned, drained or trafficked? | Disturbance can leave persistent physical and biological effects. |
| Measurement boundary | Are values from chambers, eddy covariance, soil only or the whole forest? | Prevents unlike fluxes from being treated as equivalent. |
A practical checklist for interpreting a reported methane sink
- Identify the compartment. Confirm whether the result covers mineral soil, organic soil, tree surfaces, water or the entire ecosystem.
- Check hydrology. Look for water-filled pore space, flooding duration, drainage class and the season of sampling.
- Check transport conditions. Examine bulk density, compaction, texture and whether oxygen can enter the measured layer.
- Read the time scale. A short campaign can miss wet-season emissions or drought-related suppression.
- Inspect the method. Compare chamber design, collar placement, analyzer, footprint and calculation period.
- Keep the uncertainty attached. Report ranges and source qualifications instead of turning one site value into a global rate.
Common misconceptions
- All forests absorb methane. Well-drained mineral soils often do, but saturated microsites and wet forests can emit methane.
- More drying always means more removal. Mild drying can improve diffusion; severe drought can suppress microbial activity.
- Tree uptake is soil uptake. Bark, stems and foliage are separate compartments and require separate accounting.
- Nitrogen fertilizer boosts every microbial sink. Nitrogen frequently inhibits methanotrophy in nitrogen-rich soils, with different responses in nitrogen-poor systems.
- A global estimate applies to one plot. Global ranges combine many sites and assumptions; local hydrology and measurement boundaries control the observed flux.
Key takeaways
- Aerobic methanotrophs remove atmospheric methane in oxygenated forest mineral soils.
- Water-filled pore space, compaction and soil structure determine whether methane reaches those organisms.
- Temperature, pH, nutrients, nitrogen inputs, carbon and microbial communities modify oxidation.
- Flooding, persistent saturation, severe disturbance or active methanogenesis can turn a sink into a source.
- Soil is only one part of forest methane exchange; tree surfaces can contribute substantially.
- Global estimates are uncertain ranges, and long-term observations show declining uptake at some forest sites.
