Fog nets collect water by letting wind-driven fog pass through a vertical mesh. Tiny droplets stick to the fibers, merge into larger drops, and run down into a gutter, conduit, tank or cistern. The stored water can then be delivered through hoses or irrigation lines to crops, tree nurseries and restoration sites.

They work only where fog occurs often enough, wind can move it through the mesh, and the site can convey and store the runoff. A 2026 project at Chile’s Cerro Grande Ecological Reserve shows the potential: 34 collectors covering 306 square metres can produce up to 650,000 litres per year, although that figure is specific to the reserve’s local climate, design and operating conditions.

What a fog net is

A fog net is a passive, vertical water collector. It has no pump or mechanical condenser. A framed panel of mesh is exposed directly to the atmosphere, normally across the prevailing direction of fog-bearing airflow. As moist air moves through the panel, suspended droplets collide with the mesh fibers and adhere to them. Gravity then does the rest of the collection work.

  1. Wind pushes foggy air through the mesh.
  2. Droplets deposit on the fibers.
  3. Small droplets coalesce into larger drops.
  4. The drops flow downward into a gutter or plastic conduit.
  5. A hose or pipe carries the water to a tank, cistern or pond.
  6. Stored water is distributed for irrigation, restoration or another approved use.

Because the system relies on naturally occurring fog and wind, it is best understood as a site-specific catchment system rather than a universal replacement for rainwater, wells or piped supply.

How the mesh turns fog into usable water

Droplet capture

Fog contains liquid-water droplets suspended in air. The mesh does not create water from humidity alone; it captures droplets that are already present. Wind speed, droplet size, the amount of open area in the mesh and the direction of airflow all influence how many droplets strike the fibers instead of passing around or through them.

Coalescence and drainage

Once droplets are attached, neighboring droplets join into larger drops. When their weight overcomes surface tension and friction on the fibers, they travel down the mesh. A sloped gutter at the bottom receives the runoff. From there, gravity or a short conveyance line moves it to storage. The Chilean project describes the same process as microdroplets condensing on the mesh and running into gutters before hoses distribute the water to irrigation areas.

Why passive collection matters

A fog net can operate without electricity at the collection panel, making it useful in remote terrain. However, the overall installation still needs sound anchoring, conveyance, storage and an end-use distribution system. If the tank is uphill from the collector, pumping may be required; if it is downhill, gravity may be sufficient.

Where fog nets can work

Siting usually determines success more than the name of the mesh or the size of the tank. Productive locations have recurring fog, enough wind to move that fog through the panel, and terrain that allows water to reach storage. Coastal deserts and high, dry mountain slopes are common examples because moist air can encounter cooler terrain and form persistent low clouds or fog.

  • Fog frequency: Occasional fog may produce too little water for a dependable farm or restoration program.
  • Wind regime: Air must move through the panel. Calm conditions reduce contact between droplets and fibers; excessive wind can stress frames and anchors.
  • Terrain: A ridge or exposed slope may intercept fog efficiently, but it also increases structural and access demands.
  • Orientation: Panels are normally placed perpendicular to prevailing cloud flow so the fog crosses the mesh rather than traveling along it.
  • Conveyance route: Long hoses, steep elevation changes and leaks reduce the amount reaching storage.
  • Exposure: Dust, salt, smoke and other airborne contaminants can accumulate on the collector and affect water quality.

A short field assessment should record fog occurrence, prevailing wind direction, seasonal changes, available anchor points, drainage paths and the location of intended users before construction begins.

What determines how much water a fog net produces

There is no universally reliable litres-per-panel figure. Yield changes with the local fog regime and with the complete system, not just its nominal area. Important variables include:

  • How many hours and days fog is present, especially during the growing or planting season.
  • Wind speed and direction while fog is present.
  • Droplet-size distribution in the local fog.
  • Mesh material, fiber geometry and open area.
  • Panel orientation, height and exposure to unobstructed airflow.
  • Frame movement, tears, blocked mesh or poor gutter alignment.
  • Evaporation, leakage and other losses between the gutter and the point of use.
  • Storage capacity relative to the timing of fog events and irrigation demand.

For planning, distinguish between gross collection at the mesh and usable delivery after conveyance, storage and distribution losses. A collector may appear productive during a fog event while still failing to supply plants through a later dry period if the tank is too small or leaks.

Documented example: Cerro Grande, Chile

In a case study dated 15 June 2026, FAO reported that the Cerro Grande Ecological Reserve had 34 fog catchers with a combined catchment area of 306 square metres. Together, they can collect up to 650,000 litres per year. FAO says most collection occurs in spring, when fog and wind are strongest.

The reserve uses that water for several purposes:

  • Irrigating crops and supporting small production cycles during dry periods.
  • Watering ecological restoration areas containing native species.
  • Providing drinking water for people and animals, subject to the project’s treatment and management arrangements.

A GEF-supported expansion added 90 square metres of collection area and is expected to produce more than 200,000 litres annually. That expectation is a project-specific forecast, not a guaranteed output for every 90-square-metre installation. The reported figures illustrate why local measurements matter: the same mesh area can perform very differently under another fog, wind, contamination or maintenance regime.

Using fog water for farming

Keeping crops alive during dry periods

Fog water can supplement rainfall or another source when a crop is already established but a dry interval threatens it. The most practical approach is usually to store collection from fog events and release it through controlled irrigation rather than letting each event wet the field directly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Matching supply to the crop

Farmers should compare expected seasonal delivery with crop demand, tank capacity and the reliability of backup water. Fog collection is more suitable for a small irrigated area, nursery or high-value crop than for a large, water-intensive field unless the site has exceptional fog conditions and substantial collector area.

Distribution choices

Hoses, pipes and irrigation lines should be sized and routed to limit leaks and unnecessary elevation gain. Drip or other low-loss methods can make a limited supply last longer, but the appropriate method depends on crop spacing, filtration needs and local practice. Keep the storage outlet protected from sediment and debris so that irrigation emitters do not clog.

Using fog water for reforestation

Nursery production

Tree seedlings often need reliable water before they can survive in a restoration landscape. A fog system can supply a nursery where rainfall is inadequate, allowing native plants to be raised until they are ready for planting. Nursery managers still need to plan for the dry season: collection is seasonal, so tank volume and a backup source determine how many seedlings can be maintained.

Establishment watering

Recently planted native trees may need supplemental watering while roots establish. Fog water can be directed to restoration plots, but the number of plants should be limited to what the measured supply can support. Planting more seedlings than the system can irrigate can reduce survival and waste the restoration investment.

Landscape placement

Collectors can be installed upslope or near a ridge while planting areas lie below, allowing gravity distribution. If restoration plots are separated from the tank by rough terrain, account for the additional pipe, protection and maintenance burden before expanding the planted area.

Engineering components of a complete system

A functioning project includes more than a sheet of mesh. Typical components are:

Component Purpose Key design question
Polypropylene mesh Captures fog droplets and provides the drainage surface. Does its open area and construction suit the local droplet and wind conditions?
Poles, frame and anchors Hold the panel in the correct orientation under wind loads. Can the structure resist local gusts and be repaired with available materials?
Gutter Receives water draining from the lower edge. Is it aligned, adequately supported and protected from overflow?
Conduit or hose Moves water from the collector to storage. What route minimizes leaks, blockage and elevation gain?
Tank, cistern or pond Stores water between fog events. Can it hold water through the longest expected dry interval?
Distribution lines Deliver water to crops, seedlings or restoration plots. Can users control flow and prevent unnecessary losses?

Polypropylene is identified by the OAS technical description as a normal mesh material. Material selection should also consider ultraviolet exposure, abrasion, local availability and whether contact materials are acceptable for the intended end use.

How to plan a fog-net project

  1. Confirm the resource. Observe fog frequency and wind direction across more than one season if possible. A single foggy week is not enough to establish dependable yield.
  2. Select candidate sites. Favor exposed locations with a clear path for fog, stable ground for anchors and a practical route to storage.
  3. Define the end use. Specify the crop area, number of nursery plants, restoration plots or other demand before sizing collectors and tanks.
  4. Choose orientation and structure. Set panels across prevailing fog flow and design frames and anchors for local wind and terrain.
  5. Install drainage and conveyance. Align gutters, slope conduits where appropriate, and include protected connections that can be inspected for leaks.
  6. Size storage around seasonality. Compare expected collection during strong fog months with demand during weaker months. Include usable volume rather than counting the tank’s nominal capacity alone.
  7. Protect water quality. Keep storage covered or otherwise protected from animals, dust and debris, and establish treatment and testing appropriate to the intended use.
  8. Start with monitoring. Record collection, delivered volume, weather, visible contamination and repairs. Use those records to decide whether to add mesh area or storage.

Maintenance and common failure modes

No universal maintenance interval or guaranteed yield has been established for fog nets. The operator should set inspection frequency from local exposure and observed problems. Checks should include:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Tears, stretched sections or detached fasteners in the mesh.
  • Loose anchors, bent poles and frame movement after strong winds.
  • Leaves, dust, salt or insects blocking the mesh or gutter.
  • Cracks, kinks and leaks in hoses and conduit.
  • Overflow, sediment or animal access at the tank.
  • Changes in delivered volume that cannot be explained by weather.

If collection suddenly falls, first separate a resource problem from an equipment problem. Compare the period’s fog and wind with prior records, then inspect orientation, mesh blockage, gutter alignment and leaks. If the tank fills but crops remain dry, the constraint is likely distribution capacity, elevation or irrigation control rather than capture.

Water quality and drinking-water cautions

Fog droplets can contact airborne pollutants, salt, dust, bird waste and the collector itself. Collection alone therefore does not establish potability. Water intended for people or animals must be assessed and treated according to applicable local requirements, with monitoring that reflects the site’s contamination risks.

Irrigation and ecological restoration may have different quality requirements, but those uses still need attention to sediment, salinity, pathogens and material compatibility. Keep untreated water clearly separated from a treated drinking-water system, and document which tank or outlet serves each purpose.

How to compare two proposed designs

When evaluating alternatives, compare the whole system rather than buying the largest panel. Use the following questions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison axis Questions to ask
Fog and wind regime How often does fog occur, and from which direction and at what speeds?
Mesh What material, open area and durability are specified?
Orientation and anchoring Will the panel face the prevailing flow, and can the anchors withstand local conditions?
Area versus seasonal yield What measured or documented output is expected for this exact site and season?
Conveyance How far and how high must water travel, and where could leaks occur?
Storage How much water is usable after losses, and how long must it last?
Maintenance Who will clean, inspect and repair the system, and with what materials?
End use Is water for irrigation, restoration, livestock or treated potable supply?

Reject any proposal that gives a universal production number without identifying fog conditions, collector area, measurement period and losses. The available evidence does not establish a universal capital cost, maintenance schedule, water-quality standard or guaranteed yield.

What fog nets can—and cannot—replace

Fog nets can add a locally available source where fog is recurrent and infrastructure can be maintained. They can be valuable for small farms, nurseries and native-species restoration, particularly when a modest amount of water prevents crop failure or seedling loss.

They cannot manufacture water at a site with little fog, guarantee supply through calm or clear weather, or automatically provide safe drinking water. They also do not remove the need for storage, distribution, monitoring or a backup plan. Treat them as one part of a watershed and farm-water strategy, with expansion based on measured performance rather than panel area alone.
