Rockstar developers say Florida research trips helped shape Leonida’s places, atmosphere and story planning—but the game’s setting is a fictional, satirical interpretation, not a one-to-one copy of the state. Their accounts describe travelling from Miami through surrounding towns and the Florida Keys to Key West, then using what they observed to build a world that feels recognizable while serving the game’s tone and player experience.
How Florida research shaped Leonida
Rockstar Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson says the studio begins by choosing a real-world location to inspire a Grand Theft Auto setting and spending time there to understand its sense of place. The observations help the team decide which areas and locations belong in the game, whom to meet, and what kinds of experiences its player characters can credibly encounter.

Nelson describes translating that research into a rough narrative and a map of major story beats: “We lay out a rough narrative and begin plotting out major story beats on the map.” The map is therefore part of narrative planning, not merely a guide to reproducing real geography.

Aaron Garbut, Head of Development and Co-Studio Head at Rockstar North, says an early GTA VI research trip took a small group from Miami through nearby towns and the Florida Keys to Key West. Rockstar later returned with larger groups to record and study locations in more depth. Garbut also describes aerial filming over Everglades mangroves, the city and beaches. As he put it, “Every game we make starts with research trips.”

These are developers’ descriptions of the research route and process. They do not establish that each fictional Leonida region corresponds directly to a particular Florida town, or that a real location was copied into the game unchanged.
Why Leonida is heightened rather than documentary
The developers describe Leonida as a fictional, satirical take on modern Florida and the wider United States. The interview points to contemporary phenomena and ambient world details—including election signs, campaign robocalls, advertising, talk radio and pedestrian dialogue—as ways to create immersion and reinforce the game’s tone. Rockstar’s stated approach is to observe recognizable details, then slant or exaggerate them for the fictional world rather than document current events literally.

Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s Senior Vice President of Narrative, describes the region’s dramatic potential this way: “Miami and Southern Florida are a particular front line for this battle between astronomical wealth and unbounded ambition, creating a pressure cooker for all kinds of insanity.” The remark frames the setting as an engine for conflict and satire, not a claim that Leonida is a factual portrait of every Floridian community.
How research connects to story development
Nelson says the team develops iteratively: it assembles agreed sections and reviews progress in eight-week milestones. In the account he gives, location research informs choices about the map and characters; the broad narrative and major story beats are then plotted against that map, with development continuing through successive reviews. That process helps explain why research can influence both the world’s details and the kinds of stories that fit within it.

The interview offers qualitative accounts of the method, not a published tally of research trips or a definitive map matching every Leonida area to a real place. Treat specific location-by-location comparisons as interpretation unless Rockstar confirms them.

As of October 11, 2026, Rockstar’s official GTA VI page lists the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a release date of November 19, 2026.
