Some flowers use scent to steer pollinators toward a mate, food, or egg-laying site—even when the flower offers no such reward. Their odors are blends of airborne chemicals that insects can detect and respond to, often alongside visual, tactile, or structural cues. “Trick” is shorthand: flowers do not act with intent; these signals have evolved to exploit particular pollinators’ behaviors.
How does floral scent influence a pollinator?
A flower releases a blend of volatile compounds. Carried through the air, these chemicals can attract an insect from a distance; at closer range, they may help prompt landing or probing. The scent is information for the pollinator, not necessarily a pleasant perfume for people.
In deceptive pollination, a flower’s signal resembles a cue the insect already responds to. The match can involve scent alone or work together with the flower’s appearance, texture, and shape. Which cue matters—and how the insect reacts—depends on the particular plant-pollinator pairing.

| Strategy | What the flower mimics | What the pollinator does | Does the flower provide the expected reward? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sexual deception | Chemical cues associated with a female insect; visual or physical resemblance may reinforce them. | A male may approach and attempt to mate, carrying pollen to another flower during a later attempt. | No mating partner is provided. |
| Food deception | Signals associated with food or the appearance of rewarding flowers. | An insect searching for food visits or probes the flower. | The expected food reward is absent. |
| Brood-site deception | A site suitable for egg-laying or larval development. | A fly or beetle may approach, investigate, or attempt to use the site. | The expected breeding or development site is not actually available. |
Sexual deception: a false mating signal
In some orchid systems, floral chemistry mimics signals associated with female insects. A male that responds may attempt to mate with the flower; pollen can then be carried to another flower when the insect makes a later attempt. This behavior is sometimes called pseudocopulation.

Reviews describe sexual deception in orchids including Ophrys, Chiloglottis, and Drakaea. The chemistry is not one universal recipe: the relevant compounds and blends differ among plant-pollinator pairs. The signal may also be supported by visual or physical resemblance.
Food deception: a false promise of a meal
A flower may exploit an insect’s search for food by imitating reward-related signals or resembling flowers that offer food, without providing the expected reward itself. An Annual Reviews article from 2020 describes food deception through reward-signal mimicry in “close to a third of all orchid species.” That approximate figure concerns orchids and this particular mechanism; it is not an estimate for all flowers or all deceptive pollination.

Brood-site deception: a false place to lay eggs
Some flowers imitate sites where insects might lay eggs or their young might develop. Flies and beetles can be targets. Odors that people find powerful or fetid may attract the insects, and visual cues or structures that trap and release visitors can reinforce the scent signal.

A 2006 review also lists shelter imitation, rendezvous attraction, and pseudoantagonism among orchid deception categories, alongside food and sexual deception. These labels describe different ways flowers can exploit insect responses; they should not be mistaken for a single scent mechanism shared by every orchid.

Are deceptive scents equally specific?
No. Some signals target a narrow pollinator response, while other forms of deception may be less specialized. Reviews of sexually deceptive orchids describe unusual compounds and chemically distinct systems, but the compounds vary with the plant and its pollinator. A scent associated with one orchid system should not be treated as a general formula for attracting insects.
Nor does scent necessarily do all the work. A flower’s color, shape, surface, or other physical features can reinforce the chemical cue. For any particular species, the effective signal is a matter of its interaction with its pollinator—not a rule that applies to flowers as a whole.

Why deceive pollinators if there is no reward?
One proposed advantage is that a flower may avoid some of the costs of producing a reward such as nectar. Another hypothesis is that rewardlessness can encourage insects to move between flowers, potentially supporting cross-pollination under some conditions. These are proposed evolutionary explanations, not settled universal benefits.

There is a countervailing cost: insects may visit rewardless flowers less often, and lower visitation can be associated with lower fruit production. A 2006 review discusses these patterns and notes the difficulty of reconciling them with proposed benefits. The evolutionary payoff therefore depends on the conditions and the plant-pollinator system; it is not established that deception always benefits the flower.

What the orchid counts do—and do not—tell us
Jersáková, Johnson, and Kindlmann’s 2006 review reported generalized food deception in 38 orchid genera and sexual deception in 18 genera. These are review-era genus counts, not a current census. They describe orchids, not all flowering plants, and do not measure how common deceptive pollination is across flowers today.
