Floating graphene can use sunlight to evaporate water at the surface, but it does not produce drinkable water by itself: the vapor must be captured and condensed. Research has demonstrated promising laboratory results, including a 2018 graphene membrane study reporting desalination under simulated sunlight. That is not evidence of a commercial device or of reliable drinking-water production outdoors at scale.
How floating graphene makes water vapor
The material floats at the air–water interface and absorbs sunlight, concentrating heat near the surface. That heat drives evaporation. To obtain liquid fresh water, a system must also collect the vapor and condense it; evaporation alone is not a finished desalination system.
This approach is called solar-driven interfacial evaporation. It aims to heat a thin layer of water rather than boil an entire water supply. The phrase “cooks up” in the headline is figurative: the cited studies describe solar evaporation, not boiling the water.

The headline echoes a 2017 report about a graphene aerogel. A separate 2018 paper studied a laser-scribed graphene membrane for seawater desalination. They used different materials and addressed different tasks, so their reported results should not be treated as a head-to-head performance comparison.

The 13-times figure comes from Chemistry World’s 2017 secondary report; the 1.37 kg m−2 h−1 figure is from the 2018 paper by Li, Law, and Chan. The different setups and reported tasks mean the numbers cannot be used to rank the materials.
What the 2018 membrane showed
The authors reported that the membrane could float at the air–water interface and right itself when overturned. They described this as a self-righting ability and concluded that the process was feasible for practical desalination on ocean surfaces. That statement is the authors’ conclusion about feasibility, not evidence that the membrane has been deployed at sea.

The 2022 review provides context on laser-induced graphene desalination, but the original paper is the more direct source for the 2018 experiment. A separate institutional record from Hong Kong Polytechnic University confirms the paper’s bibliographic details.

The studies support a narrower answer: floating graphene has been used in experiments to drive solar evaporation, and the 2018 study reports desalination results. The evidence cited here does not establish a consumer-ready device, safe drinking-water production at scale, or dependable performance under long-term outdoor conditions. Condensation and collection are also necessary to turn the vapor into usable liquid water.

For the 2017 aerogel, Chemistry World quoted photonics nanoengineering researcher Satoshi Ishii describing the absorber fabrication as simple and scalable, while also noting that further feasibility studies would be needed for real-life applications. Scalability of a fabrication method is not the same as a demonstrated, durable water-treatment system.
