A file association is the operating system’s mapping between a file type and an application that can open or handle it. It usually determines which app launches when you open a file from a file manager. The mapping is a system preference, not a property of the file itself: several apps may support a type, while one is selected as the default.
What a file association does
When you open a file, the operating system identifies its type and uses its association rules to choose an application. The association answers “which app should be tried?” It does not confirm that the file’s contents are valid or that the selected app can successfully read them.
A filename extension is a common clue, but it is not the only type identifier. Depending on the platform, applications and the operating system may also use MIME types or Uniform Type Identifiers (UTIs). An app’s registration indicates that it claims to handle a type; it does not make that app the default or guarantee compatibility with every file bearing that type.

How file associations work on each platform
| Platform | Type identification and app registration | How the preferred app is resolved |
|---|---|---|
| Windows | File associations commonly use filename extensions and can include MIME types. Apps register supported types and connect them to application-specific ProgIDs. | Windows uses the selected default for a file or link type. Users manage defaults in Settings; the exact navigation can vary by Windows release. |
| macOS | Launch Services registers the document files and URLs an app can open. UTIs provide common type identifiers that can map to filename extensions and MIME types. | Launch Services identifies a preferred app, and Finder uses the service when opening documents. Finder’s Open With and default-app controls work with registered document types; wording can vary between macOS releases. |
| Linux desktops using freedesktop.org specifications | The desktop identifies MIME types and associates applications with them. Desktop environments may provide their own user-facing controls. | The default application is recorded in the [Default Applications] group of mimeapps.list. Implementations check configured locations in an order, and details can vary by distribution and desktop environment. |
Windows: choose which app opens a file type
Windows Shell file associations affect more than double-click behavior: they also control the default icon and how the file type appears in Explorer. On Windows 11, the Default apps experience in Settings lets users choose which apps Windows uses for specific file or link types. The precise route through Settings may shift between Windows releases.

Packaged apps can declare supported file types in their package manifest; non-packaged apps can use other registration mechanisms. Registration makes an app a possible handler, while the user’s default determines which handler Windows prefers for ordinary opening.
macOS: how Launch Services connects documents and apps
macOS uses Launch Services to register information about the document files and URLs an app can open and to identify a preferred app. Apple describes it as the API used to open apps, documents, and URLs; Finder also uses it.

Apple’s UTI framework supplies type identifiers that can map to file extensions and MIME types. For a proprietary format, an app can declare an exported type when it is the canonical source, or an imported type when it supports a type defined elsewhere. A type declaration can list associated extensions and MIME types.

Linux: MIME types and default applications
On Linux desktops that follow freedesktop.org specifications, the system first identifies a file’s MIME type and then resolves an application registered for that type. The preferred application is recorded in mimeapps.list, in its [Default Applications] group. The specification defines locations and an order for checking configuration, while distributions and desktop environments may add their own settings interfaces.

Why changing an association may not make a file open
An association routes an opening request; it does not inspect the file to prove it is intact or compatible. A file can have a familiar extension yet contain unexpected data, be damaged, or use features the chosen app does not support. If the app reports an error, check that the file is valid and that the app supports its actual format rather than assuming the association itself guarantees successful opening.
