Felona Voice combines a bounded conversation graph with similarity-based selection among actions your application defines. Its Joint Embedding Vectors (JEV) routing can choose a suitable action for the current state, while a fallback handles low-confidence or ambiguous matches. The framework does not provide a complete speech stack, and its README marks the trained next-state predictor as planned rather than released.

What JEV and VoiceGraph do

Think of the system as two related parts: VoiceGraph represents the conversation’s possible states and transitions; JEV-style matching helps select an application-defined action that fits the current utterance and state. This bounds routing to actions available in the graph instead of asking a generative model to invent a route.

Felona Voice’s repository README describes a pipeline from audio input through voice activity detection and speech recognition to JEV decision-making, an action handler, text-to-speech, and audio output. Conversation memory supplies recent user turns as context. The action handler performs application work—such as an API or database call—and returns text that can be sent to TTS.

Routing within the graph

The documented matcher compares an utterance representation with pre-embedded action descriptions using cosine similarity. The valid actions depend on the current conversation state, so the graph constrains what can be selected. The README gives a default confidence threshold of 0.35: a result below the threshold, or an ambiguous match, goes to a fallback rather than being treated as a confident action.

What bounded routing does not guarantee

A defined action set can limit which route the matcher selects, but it does not ensure that speech was transcribed correctly, that a handler returns correct data, or that any generated reply is accurate. Reliability still depends on the speech services, application code, data sources, and error handling around the route.

The built-in embedder is lexical, not neural

The repository describes its built-in FastSemanticEmbeddingProvider as a deterministic lexical embedder based on keyword anchors and character n-grams—not a neural network. Developers can instead use a separately supplied neural embedding provider; the README documents OpenAI embeddings and custom EmbeddingProvider implementations as options.

That distinction matters when evaluating matches. A deterministic lexical approach avoids a neural model call for its own embedding step, but its behavior depends on how well its lexical features distinguish the actions in your domain. An external embedding provider changes that dependency and should be evaluated for its fit, latency, availability, and cost in your own deployment.

The trained next-state predictor is not currently available

The README labels the trained predictor—which is intended to transform context into a predicted next state—as planned. It says that jev.predictorModel currently throws. Do not design around predictor training as a shipped capability unless a later release documents and implements it.

Felona Voice is a framework, not a complete voice-agent service

The project documents integration choices for speech recognition, speech synthesis, embeddings, and transport. Those provider lists are project documentation and can change between releases; check the current package and repository before choosing an integration. The application still needs action handlers and deployment configuration.

Layer Options documented by the project
Speech recognition (STT) Deepgram streaming, Whisper, AssemblyAI, Azure, Google
Speech synthesis (TTS) ElevenLabs, Deepgram Aura, Cartesia Sonic, OpenAI, Azure, Polly, LMNT
Embeddings OpenAI text-embedding-3-small, FastSemanticEmbedding
Transport WebSocket, Twilio Media Streams, WebRTC
Tools Native ToolRegistry, MCP over JSON-RPC

The README says the described release has no built-in LLM provider. If an application needs generated phrasing, its handler can call an LLM, but that is application-level integration—not JEV routing itself. Speech recognition, speech synthesis, transport, and handler behavior likewise depend on the selected integrations and your code.

How to assess latency and quality claims

The repository’s comparison table reports “sub-millisecond, in-process” routing. A separate DEV Community article published on October 6, 2026 describes “sub-10ms” routing and roughly 5 ms operation. These are project or article claims, not independently verified results, and the available material does not give enough benchmark methodology to generalize them across hardware, embedding providers, graph sizes, or full audio turns. The two figures should not be treated as corroborating measurements. See the article and repository README for the claims in context.

Measure routing separately from end-to-end audio latency: a fast in-process match says nothing by itself about recognition delay, network calls, handler work, TTS generation, or transport. Test representative utterances, including ambiguous and off-script speech, and record both successful routes and fallback behavior. Compare alternatives on the same workload rather than assuming a universal speed, accuracy, or cost advantage.

  • Measure route-selection latency independently from complete audio-turn latency.
  • Check whether your action descriptions and graph states distinguish the requests users actually make.
  • Test low-confidence, ambiguous, and off-script inputs, including what the fallback tells the user.
  • Include embedding-provider latency and availability, speech-service and telephony charges, and hosting costs in operational estimates.
  • Track handler failures, timeouts, retries, cancellations, and the outcome of fallback paths.

Production responsibilities to plan for

The repository describes production defaults that include finite concurrency, a maximum call duration, deadlines and retries for outbound requests, capped audio buffers, and cancellation of TTS work on barge-in. These controls are useful safeguards, not a substitute for deployment-specific testing. The project also identifies rate limiting, compliance, and load testing as deployment responsibilities.

Before launch, exercise the full path under expected concurrency and failure conditions. Confirm that limits fit your call patterns, outbound services honor your timeout and retry policy, and interruption cancels unnecessary synthesis work. Add monitoring for speech-service errors, route confidence, fallback frequency, handler outcomes, and total turn time so a routing issue can be distinguished from an upstream or downstream failure.

License and release details

The repository documentation describes commercial use under MIT and specifies a visible attribution requirement: “Powered by Felona Voice” or “Built with Felona Voice,” with a direct link to the project. Review the license file in the release you use before relying on that summary. Package-version information can also be volatile: the available npm search results differed, reporting 3.0.0 and 3.1.0. Check the npm package listing and repository release for the version you install rather than assuming either result is current.
