Negative feedback can keep an FM receiver usable at lower carrier-to-noise ratios (CNR) by reducing the frequency deviation handled by later receiver stages and shaping the loop’s response to noise. It extends the useful operating region; it does not remove the FM threshold, guarantee a high-CNR signal-to-noise improvement, or work without trade-offs in tracking and distortion.
Why FM demodulators have a threshold
An FM demodulator converts changes in instantaneous frequency into an output signal. At adequate carrier-to-noise ratio, the wanted carrier dominates and the output generally follows the modulation. As input CNR falls, noise increasingly disrupts the frequency estimate. Near the threshold region, output quality can deteriorate abruptly, with large, click-like disturbances rather than only a gradual rise in background noise.
The threshold is therefore an operating region, not a single universal CNR value: its location and severity depend on the receiver and signal conditions. NASA’s 1972 report, A Study of FM Threshold Extension Techniques, examines these effects and approaches intended to suppress the resulting output impulses. Its central caution applies to feedback receivers too: the threshold phenomenon remains a limit.
How FM feedback reduces the impact of low CNR
The feedback path
In an FM feedback (FMFB) demodulator, frequency-error information from the demodulated signal is fed back to the receiver’s oscillator or frequency-conversion path. This negative feedback reduces the effective frequency deviation that later intermediate-frequency (IF) and discriminator stages must handle. In Ruthroff’s 1961 description, the technique reduces the FM modulation index in receiver IF amplifiers.

With less deviation reaching those later stages, the receiver can narrow the effective noise bandwidth and reduce the influence of noise in the operating region near threshold. Frequency-compressive feedback has also been studied as a way to reduce distortion and noise sensitivity in wide-band FM demodulation. The benefit comes from the complete loop’s behavior, not from bandwidth reduction in isolation.
Why the gain has limits
A feedback loop must still track the incoming modulation. Loop and filter choices affect tracking, distortion, and noise response; narrowing bandwidth too aggressively is not a free improvement. The useful result depends on the signal and receiver design, and threshold-related degradation can still occur when CNR falls far enough.

What the historical performance figure means
NASA’s 1972 report gives a typical predetection SNR improvement of 2 or 3 dB for a PLL or FMFB demodulator over a standard frequency discriminator. That is a qualified historical comparison—not a guaranteed gain for every implementation, signal, or operating condition, and not evidence of a universal improvement at high CNR.

FMFB and phase-locked-loop (PLL) demodulation are receiver architectures: they use feedback within the demodulation process. NASA also examines post-detection techniques aimed at threshold noise impulses. Those methods act on the detected output rather than changing the receiver’s frequency-conversion loop.

- Bass & Treble Control】Designed with volume, treble and bass control knobs for more delicate adjustment of the sound, much fun and high playability. Include controller for distant audio adjustments. Note: There is an isolation plastic sheet at the bottom of the remote control, which needs to be removed before use.
| Approach | Threshold behavior | Noise and distortion | Tracking and implementation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Standard frequency discriminator | Provides the baseline in NASA’s historical comparison; output may degrade sharply near threshold. | Threshold noise can produce large, click-like output disturbances. | Conventional discriminator approach; the cited comparison does not give circuit-specific tracking details. |
| FM feedback (FMFB) | Can extend the useful range into lower-CNR conditions, but does not abolish threshold effects. | Frequency compression and loop shaping can reduce noise sensitivity; loop choices constrain distortion and bandwidth. | Feeds demodulated frequency-error information to the oscillator or conversion path; performance depends on loop and filter design. |
| PLL demodulator | Also offers threshold extension relative to a standard discriminator; threshold remains a limit. | NASA groups PLL and FMFB in its typical 2 or 3 dB predetection SNR comparison; no universal result is established. | Uses a phase-locked loop; the available sources do not establish a universal tracking or complexity ranking against FMFB. |
| Post-detection impulse elimination, correlation detection, or delta-modulation processing | Targets threshold-related impulses in the detected signal rather than preventing the receiver’s threshold phenomenon. | NASA evaluates these as techniques for impulse-noise elimination or processing; the sources do not establish one method as best for every signal. | Processing follows detection, unlike FMFB or PLL loop architectures. |
The evidence supports no universal winner across these options. A comparison for a particular receiver needs its modulation bandwidth, CNR range, acceptable distortion, tracking requirements, and implementation constraints; the available sources do not provide a controlled modern ranking or circuit values for that decision.
