In the United States, the only FDA-approved fat-dissolving injection is deoxycholic acid (Kybella), and its approved use is narrowly defined: improving the appearance of moderate-to-severe fullness caused by submental fat beneath the chin in adults. It is a prescription procedure administered by a healthcare provider, not a product for home use or a general treatment for abdominal, thigh, arm, or other body fat.
The injections can reduce fat at treated sites, but suitability and safety depend on an examination of your anatomy, skin, medical history, and the cause of the fullness. Swelling, bruising, pain, numbness, and redness are common; nerve injury, swallowing problems, tissue or vascular damage, and persistent nodules are more serious concerns.
What “fat-dissolving injections” actually are
“Fat-dissolving injections” is a broad marketing term, not the name of one universally regulated treatment. Injection lipolysis refers to a nonsurgical procedure in which a series of injections are placed under the skin to break down fat cells around the injection sites. Products sold online or in clinics under other names may have different ingredients, evidence, manufacturing controls, and legal status.

For the FDA-approved medicine deoxycholic acid, the target is submental fat—the pocket of fat beneath the chin that contributes to a double-chin appearance. The medicine is injected into the subcutaneous fat by a healthcare professional. Breaking down fat cells at the injection sites does not mean that every area of the body can be treated safely or that every product described as a “fat dissolver” works in the same way.

What is FDA approved—and what is not?
In the United States, Kybella (deoxycholic acid) is indicated for adults with moderate-to-severe convexity or fullness associated with submental fat. The indication does not cover fat on the abdomen, hips, thighs, upper arms, knees, or other body areas. The FDA’s September 15, 2026 safety communication states: “KYBELLA is not approved for the treatment of subcutaneous fat outside the submental region and such use is not recommended.”
That distinction matters because a clinic’s advertising, a social-media testimonial, or a product label using phrases such as “lemon bottle,” “fat dissolver,” or “injection lipolysis” is not evidence of FDA approval. An unapproved or compounded product may not have the same quality controls or clinical evidence as the prescription medicine. Using an approved medicine in an unapproved location is still an unapproved use.

How the approved treatment is delivered
Treatment is a course rather than a single guaranteed injection. The current prescribing information allows up to six treatment sessions, with at least one month between sessions. Each session can involve up to 50 injections into the submental fat. These are upper limits in the label, not a prediction that every patient needs six visits or 50 injection points.

- Clinical assessment: A qualified provider examines the fullness, skin, neck anatomy, medical history, and any previous procedures. The provider decides whether the appearance is primarily caused by submental fat and whether another approach would be more appropriate.
- Planning the injection area: The provider identifies the subcutaneous fat and avoids structures that could be injured. Prior surgery, injections, or other aesthetic treatment can alter landmarks, so the label advises caution in those patients.
- Injection session: Deoxycholic acid is injected under the skin in the planned submental area. The number of injection points and the number of sessions depend on the clinical assessment and response.
- Follow-up decisions: Sessions, if needed, are separated by at least a month. A provider should reassess the result and any reactions before deciding whether another treatment is appropriate.
The available FDA material does not establish a universal recovery duration or guarantee a particular cosmetic result. Swelling and other reactions can affect appearance after treatment, so ask the treating clinician what to expect in your own case rather than relying on a generic timeline.
Who may be considered—and what must be checked first
The labeled population is adults with moderate-to-severe submental fullness associated with submental fat. Meeting that description does not automatically make someone a candidate. A consultation should determine whether reducing fat is likely to produce the desired contour and whether another condition is causing the fullness.
Possible causes other than fat
The label instructs providers to screen for other potential causes of submental fullness, including thyromegaly (an enlarged thyroid) and cervical lymphadenopathy (enlarged neck lymph nodes). A cosmetic injection should not be used to mask a medical problem that needs diagnosis.

Skin and neck anatomy
Excessive skin laxity, prominent platysmal bands, or other neck conditions can make fat reduction produce an aesthetically undesirable result. Removing or reducing fat does not automatically tighten loose skin or correct muscle bands. The provider should explain how these features affect the likely appearance.
Previous procedures
Prior surgery, injections, or other aesthetic treatment in the area can change anatomy and injection landmarks. Tell the provider exactly what has been done, when it was performed, and whether you had complications. This history is a safety issue, not merely a cosmetic detail.
Side effects and serious risks
Reactions reported commonly in clinical studies
The prescribing information lists each of the following reactions in more than 20% of subjects: injection-site swelling or edema, hematoma (bruising), pain, numbness, erythema (redness), and induration (firmness). “Common” does not mean harmless or equally severe for every person; ask how a reaction will be monitored and when it should be reported.

Important complications in the treatment area
Other listed concerns include injury to nerves around the lower lip, difficulty swallowing, tissue damage, and vascular injury. Lower-lip nerve injury can affect facial movement. Swallowing difficulty can interfere with eating or drinking. Tissue and vascular injuries can require medical evaluation. A provider should explain the warning signs specific to the injection technique used.
Persistent nodules or masses
In a safety communication dated September 15, 2026, FDA reported an association between deoxycholic acid injections and injection-site nodules or masses that may not resolve over time and may require medical intervention. FDA identified 117 cases of unresolved nodules or masses. The mean duration at the time of reporting was 143 days—approximately five months—but that figure describes reported cases and is not a forecast for an individual patient.
Reports after use outside the approved area
FDA identified 129 adverse-event cases after use outside the approved submental region through its adverse-event system and a literature review. Reported serious events included blurred or reduced vision, involuntary eye contractions, muscle and nerve damage or weakness, numbness, and difficulty walking. These case counts do not include the total number of people treated, so they are not incidence rates and cannot be used to calculate your personal probability of harm.

Why location and provider matter
The under-chin indication is based on a specific anatomy and evidence base. Injecting near the eyes, limbs, trunk, or other structures introduces different nerves, blood vessels, and tissue planes. FDA does not recommend using Kybella outside the submental area, even when a provider or online seller describes the practice as routine.
Choose a qualified healthcare provider who can verify the product, explain its approved indication, assess your anatomy, and manage complications. Ask to see the product name and prescribing information, confirm that it is intended for provider administration, and discuss how adverse reactions will be handled. A low price or a social-media before-and-after image cannot establish that the medicine is authentic or that the technique is safe.
Do not buy or self-inject “fat dissolvers”
FDA’s consumer guidance is explicit: “Consumers should not purchase ingredients for unapproved fat-dissolving injections or inject the drugs themselves.” Home injection creates risks of wrong dosing, contamination, injection into a blood vessel or nerve, tissue injury, and delayed treatment of a complication. Needles, vials, and aftercare supplies are not substitutes for a clinical assessment.
Products sold online may have inaccurate labels, unknown concentrations, or no reliable sterility testing. Even if an ingredient resembles deoxycholic acid, that does not establish that the product is FDA-approved, appropriately manufactured, or suitable for a particular body area.
Questions to take to a consultation
- What is causing the fullness: submental fat, loose skin, platysmal bands, enlarged thyroid, lymph nodes, or another condition?
- Is the proposed product FDA-approved, and is my treatment area within its approved indication?
- How many injection points and sessions do you expect, and why might that number change?
- What side effects are expected, and which symptoms require an urgent call or emergency care?
- Could my previous surgery, injections, or medical conditions change the risks?
- How will you evaluate a lump, swallowing problem, facial weakness, vision change, or other unexpected reaction?
When to seek medical attention
Contact the treating provider promptly for reactions that are severe, worsening, persistent, or different from what you were told to expect. Seek urgent medical care for difficulty swallowing, facial weakness, significant tissue injury, vision changes, new muscle weakness, numbness, trouble walking, or any symptom that suggests a serious reaction. FDA asks patients and providers to report suspected adverse events through its MedWatch program; reporting does not replace medical evaluation.
A practical decision checklist
- Confirm the indication: In the United States, the approved target is submental fat beneath the chin in adults.
- Verify the provider: Treatment should be performed by a healthcare provider who can assess anatomy and respond to complications.
- Review alternatives and limitations: Skin laxity, platysmal bands, or another cause of fullness may mean fat reduction will not create the expected contour.
- Understand the course: Up to six sessions may be used, at least one month apart, with up to 50 injections per session; these are label limits, not a personal treatment plan.
- Plan for uncertainty: Common reactions are frequent, and persistent nodules or serious nerve, swallowing, tissue, vascular, or outside-area complications are possible.
- Reject self-treatment: Do not buy ingredients or inject yourself, and do not treat online marketing as proof of approval or safety.
Bottom line
Fat-dissolving injections are not one interchangeable category. FDA-approved deoxycholic acid has a specific adult, under-the-chin indication and must be administered by a healthcare provider. A careful examination is needed to confirm that the fullness is submental fat, account for skin and neck anatomy, and identify risks from prior procedures or medical conditions. Unapproved products and injections into other body areas are not equivalent substitutes, and self-injection can cause preventable harm.
