A browser release can move a real-user monitoring (RUM) percentile even when your site has not changed. The reason may be a shift in which browser versions—and which users—are represented in the data, rather than a new site performance problem. Treat a release as a reason to check your cohorts, not as proof of a regression.

Why can browser releases change RUM data?

RUM describes the experience of the users who generated the measurements in a particular period. If the browser-version mix changes, the population behind a percentile changes too. A performance measure such as p75 can therefore move even if the site itself did not deploy.

Harry Roberts makes this distinction in CSS Wizardry’s August 26, 2026 article, “Web-Perf Wednesday 006 – Faster Browser Releases Change Your RUM Population”: “None of this makes a percentile wrong; it changes the questions needed to interpret it.” A percentile is still a valid summary of its measured cohort. The question is whether that cohort is comparable with the one you are using as a baseline.

More frequent major releases may make exact-version cohorts shorter-lived and smaller. That effect can be more pronounced when you also split traffic by route, device, country, or experiment. It is an expected risk to check against your own traffic, not a guarantee that every browser release will move your metrics.

Which release-cadence changes matter in 2026?

Chrome

Google announced a move from four-week to two-week Stable releases beginning with Chrome 153 on September 8, 2026, for Desktop, Android, and iOS. Chrome Dev and Canary were unchanged, while Extended Stable retained a longer cycle. Google’s September 8 implementation update confirmed Chrome 153’s launch and said Chrome 154 Beta was available ahead of its September 22 Stable release.

Firefox

Mozilla set Firefox 155, released September 1, 2026, as the first version on its two-week cadence. Mozilla described the change as delivering updates more frequently—not doubling the number of features—and noted that dot releases could still be issued when needed.

These are release schedules, not dates on which every user moves to a new version. Adoption in your own RUM traffic is what matters for interpreting a change in your data.

How do you tell a browser-version change from a site regression?

Start with the overall experience, then use browser-specific slices to understand what changed in its population. Make comparisons interpretable: a change in browser version alone is difficult to assess if the route, device mix, country, experiment membership, or measurement completion also changed.

  1. Check the overall series. Keep an unsegmented view as a reference for the experience across all measured users. Note whether the apparent movement occurs there, in a browser-specific slice, or both.
  2. Inspect browser and major-version distribution. Compare the versions contributing measurements in each period. A percentile shift that coincides with a changing version mix deserves cohort-level investigation before it is attributed to a site change.
  3. Check what else is in each cohort. Compare route or URL scope, device or form factor, country or other relevant audience mix, and experiment cohort. These dimensions can alter which users are represented in a slice.
  4. Review sample counts and metric completion. Confirm how many measurements are available and how many have completed for the metric being compared. Set your own sample-size and completion thresholds before slicing; there is no universal minimum established here.
  5. Broaden a thin comparison. If an exact-major cohort falls below your preset threshold, use a broader browser cohort rather than drawing a strong conclusion from a small slice. Keep the smaller view available as a signal to investigate, not as decisive evidence.
  6. Check the deployment and instrumentation timeline. Compare the browser timeline with application, CDN, tag-manager, and RUM changes. Record the instrumentation version alongside page views so that a measurement change is not mistaken for a browser or site effect.

When the data supports it, compare like with like—for example, the same route and device mix across browser versions—and then see how that result relates to the overall series. A field shift by itself does not establish what caused it; the checks above help narrow the explanation.

How should you track browser dates alongside site changes?

Keep Beta and Stable milestones on the same operational calendar as application deployments, CDN changes, tag-manager updates, and RUM instrumentation changes. Annotate the dates as release milestones, not as evidence that all users upgraded on those days. Then use the version distribution in your own measurements to see when the new release actually becomes material to your audience.

Preserving the instrumentation version with page views is especially useful when a measurement implementation changes near a browser release. It lets you separate a change in what your RUM setup records from a change in the experiences being measured.

What can field data say about unexplained TTFB time?

Navigation Timing exposes phases that can be used to account for parts of time to first byte (TTFB), including redirect, DNS, connection, and request-to-response time. Roberts uses Unattributed Navigation Overhead (UNO) for the remainder after subtracting those exposed phases. A remainder is a measurement to investigate, not a diagnosis: it does not by itself establish server work or prove that hidden redirects occurred.

Roberts reports 7,131,737 UNO observations and 166 visible redirects in one unnamed client dataset in 2026. The client identity, collection method, and representativeness are not specified, so those counts cannot be treated as an industry-wide rate or used to infer that redirects caused the unexplained time.

If you record UNO, keep both its duration and its occurrence count. Segment the investigation by landing page, campaign, referrer, browser, and connection to look for where the remainder occurs. Treat any pattern as a lead for further diagnosis, not proof of a particular cause.

How can you investigate soft-navigation changes?

Chrome DevTools Live Metrics can help reproduce and inspect soft-navigation Core Web Vitals locally. Use that lab view to explore a possible explanation, then compare it with field RUM: a local session is not the production user population and cannot substitute for it.

Release timing, cohort composition, and instrumentation history give you context for a changed percentile. They do not establish causation on their own; the interpretation still depends on what your own measured users and comparable cohorts show.
