Fast radio bursts reveal otherwise hard-to-see cosmic gas by measuring how much the gas delays radio waves. The delay yields a dispersion measure (DM): an estimate of the free electrons accumulated along the burst’s path. It is a line-of-sight column measurement—not a picture of the gas or a complete map—and it includes contributions from the burst’s surroundings, its host galaxy, the Milky Way and intervening structures. Astronomers use localized bursts, redshifts and statistical samples to separate those contributions and infer how ordinary matter is distributed between galaxies.
What an FRB’s dispersion measure actually measures
A fast radio burst (FRB) is a brief radio pulse that reaches a telescope with a range of frequencies. When radio waves travel through ionized material, their lower-frequency components arrive later than their higher-frequency components. Astronomers measure this frequency-dependent delay and summarize it as a dispersion measure.
In physical terms, DM tracks the free-electron column along the path: the electron density accumulated over distance. It is commonly expressed in pc cm−3. A larger DM can indicate more ionized material between the source and the observer, but it does not say exactly where along the route those electrons are. Two sightlines with the same DM could pass through very different arrangements of gas.
The distinction matters: an FRB does not photograph the intergalactic medium (IGM), nor does one burst provide a three-dimensional map. It acts more like a probe sent through a long column. The pulse’s delay records the total electron contribution encountered along that column; additional information and many sightlines are needed to work out which structures supplied it.

How astronomers turn a pulse into a cosmic-gas measurement
1. Measure the frequency-dependent delay
Radio telescopes record when different frequencies from a burst arrive. The dispersive pattern reveals the pulse’s DM. That measurement is a total along the observed path, not a label attached only to intergalactic gas.
2. Locate the burst and identify its host when possible
Finding a burst’s position on the sky helps astronomers identify a host galaxy. If the host’s distance or redshift can also be established, researchers gain context for how far the radio pulse traveled and which cosmic volume its path crossed. The 2020 localized-FRB study used bursts with host-galaxy and redshift information to estimate the cosmic baryon density.
3. Account for the Milky Way and other foregrounds
The observed DM can include electrons in the Milky Way, intervening galaxy halos or groups, the host galaxy, and material close to the burst. Researchers model or estimate these components rather than treating the entire measured value as IGM gas. A foreground halo can add electrons even though it is nowhere near the burst’s host.

4. Compare many sightlines
Each burst crosses a different route through a lumpy universe, and its host and local environment may differ from those of other bursts. A sample lets researchers compare measured DMs with the distances and foreground structures associated with the bursts. The resulting cosmic-gas estimate is statistical: it depends on how well the analysis accounts for foregrounds, hosts and variation from sightline to sightline.
Macquart and coauthors described the method in 2020 as one that “determines the electron column density along each line of sight and accounts for every ionized baryon” (Nature, 2020). In practice, that accounting requires modeling the source environment and foreground structures; the quote describes the method’s reach, not a claim that those components can simply be ignored.
Why the gas is important to the missing-baryon problem
Baryons are ordinary matter: the matter made from protons and neutrons. Stars and other readily visible objects account for only some of the ordinary matter expected from cosmological accounting. A substantial portion is thought to be diffuse and ionized, making it difficult to observe directly. This is the context for the phrase “missing baryons”: it refers to ordinary matter that is hard to locate in a census, not matter that has vanished.

FRBs offer a way to investigate that material because free electrons in ionized gas delay radio waves. Instead of relying only on light emitted by faint gas, astronomers can infer electrons from the pulse’s propagation. A large set of localized FRBs supplies many independent path measurements, allowing a population-level estimate of how much ionized matter lies along cosmic sightlines.

What the key studies found—and what each result means
The headline numbers from recent FRB studies address different questions. They should not be treated as repeated measurements of one identical quantity: one estimates the overall cosmic baryon abundance, another tests the effect of nearby foreground galaxy halos, and newer work broadens the analysis toward gas components and cosmic structure.

The 2020 census: an estimate of the cosmic total
The 2020 result was a landmark demonstration that localized FRBs could be used to estimate the cosmic baryon density. Macquart and coauthors reported Ωb = 0.051+0.021−0.025 h70−1 at 95% confidence. They described it as consistent with estimates based on the cosmic microwave background and Big Bang nucleosynthesis. The uncertainty is part of the result: it should not be read as an exact, universal value independent of sample and modeling.
The 2022 halo analysis: a foreground contribution
Connor and Ravi examined 474 FRBs from CHIME/FRB Catalog 1, selecting bursts whose paths were likely to intersect nearby foreground galaxy halos. In that sample, galaxy-intersecting sightlines showed an excess DM greater than 90 pc cm−3 at greater than 95% confidence compared with non-intersecting sightlines. This illustrates why an extragalactic DM cannot automatically be assigned to diffuse IGM alone: material in intervening halos and groups can make a measurable contribution.
The authors cautioned that the excess was “larger than expected for the diffuse gas surrounding isolated galaxies,” but could be explained by added gas around galaxy groups, including the Local Group (Nature Astronomy, 2022). The finding therefore points to foreground structure along the path, while leaving the precise division between isolated-galaxy and group gas an interpretation problem.

Newer work: partitioning gas and studying its structure
The indexed abstract for a 2025 Nature Astronomy study reports a late-Universe baryon-abundance measurement of Ωb h70 = 0.051 ± 0.006 and describes partitioning baryons among the IGM, clusters and galaxies. An indexed preview of a 2026 study reports using 114 FRBs to investigate baryon fluctuations and halo gas fractions. These developments broaden the questions FRB samples can address; the available information does not establish enough methodological detail to equate either result directly with the 2020 census or the 2022 halo comparison.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What an FRB DM can—and cannot—tell you
What it can tell researchers
- The total free-electron column measured along a burst’s path.
- Whether a population of sightlines is consistent with a model for the amount of ionized cosmic matter.
- Whether paths associated with foreground structures, such as nearby galaxy halos, show a different DM distribution from comparison paths.
- How samples of bursts can inform estimates of baryon abundance, gas partitioning and fluctuations in cosmic structure.
What it cannot establish by itself
- The three-dimensional position, shape or temperature of the gas responsible for a particular part of the DM.
- That all DM outside the Milky Way comes from the IGM; host galaxies, local environments, intervening halos and groups also contribute.
- A complete inventory from a single burst. Different hosts and sightlines make statistical samples necessary.
- A precise count of how many baryons remain “missing” without a defined comparison inventory. The studies summarized here do not provide a directly comparable modern missing-baryon total.
How to read claims about FRBs and cosmic gas
When a paper or news report says FRBs have “found” gas, check what the result actually measures. The safest interpretation depends on the target component, sample and accounting method—not just the headline DM value.
- Identify the gas component. A cosmic baryon-density estimate, an IGM inference, a galaxy-halo excess and a cluster or group contribution are related but distinct results.
- Check the sample and localization. The number of bursts alone does not establish how useful a sample is for a particular inference; host and redshift information help set the distance context.
- Look for foreground and host treatment. Ask how the analysis handles the Milky Way, the FRB’s local environment, its host galaxy, and intervening halos or groups.
- Keep uncertainty attached to the result. A confidence interval or confidence level belongs with the reported value, and the value belongs to the study’s sample and model.
- Separate measurement from interpretation. The measured delay constrains an electron column. Assigning that column to particular cosmic structures requires additional evidence and statistical modeling.
Used this way, FRBs are not direct images of invisible gas. They are probes whose delays make ionized matter measurable, including material that emits little light. Their strongest contribution comes from combining many carefully interpreted sightlines to test where ordinary matter resides between galaxies.
