The Lexar ARMOR 700 8TB is worth considering if you need a rugged portable SSD with a large capacity, but its advertised peak speed is not available on Macs. Lexar rates it for up to 2,000MB/s read and write over USB 3.2 Gen 2×2; AppleInsider’s Mac testing of the 8TB model reached just under 1,000MB/s in both directions. For Mac owners, the case is therefore capacity and portability—not 2,000MB/s performance.
What does the ARMOR 700 8TB offer?
Lexar announced the 8TB capacity in April 2026 as an addition to its portable ARMOR 700 SSD line. The announcement gave it a $999.99 MSRP and said it was available through Amazon at launch; neither statement establishes today’s price or stock. Lexar’s announcement
The defining specifications are 8TB of capacity and a USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 interface. Lexar advertises maximum read and write speeds of up to 2,000MB/s, based on internal testing with a host that supports Gen 2×2. Lexar cautions that actual performance can be lower depending on the host, interface, conditions, and other factors. Lexar’s ARMOR 700 product sheet
How fast is the 8TB drive on a Mac?
USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 is the important compatibility distinction: AppleInsider says Macs support USB 3.2 Gen 2 but not Gen 2×2. In AppleInsider’s review of the 8TB drive with a MacBook Pro, several Blackmagic Disk Speed Test runs measured just under 1,000MB/s for both reads and writes. That is a reviewer’s result on the tested setup, not a guarantee for every Mac, cable, workload, or connection.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
What the Mac transfer tests show
- Large project copy: AppleInsider reported that a 100GB Final Cut Pro project transferred in a little under two minutes. This is one test result, not a universal estimate.
- Long sequential write: A 1TB continuous write took 18 minutes 24 seconds and averaged 972MB/s in the review. The reviewer noted that the Mac’s 10Gb/s interface limit prevented the test from exhausting the drive’s SLC cache, so this result does not establish cache size or the drive’s maximum sustained Gen 2×2 write performance.
Earlier reviews provide context for the product family, not benchmarks for the 8TB capacity. In a June 2024 four-thread sequential test of an earlier ARMOR 700 configuration, StorageReview reported up to 1,906.56MB/s write and 2,100.67MB/s read. PCWorld’s June 2024 review also said Macs do not support Gen 2×2 and cautioned that SSD results can vary by capacity and component changes. StorageReview’s 2024 test · PCWorld’s 2024 review
Is the speed limitation a deal-breaker?
That depends on your computer and what you value most. A Windows PC with USB 3.2 Gen 2×2 can make better use of the advertised interface than a Mac that tops out at the Gen 2 mode described in the reviews. If you are buying for a Mac, assess the drive as a high-capacity portable SSD with roughly 1,000MB/s-class results in the cited review, not as a 2,000MB/s Mac drive.

- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Consider it if 8TB in a portable rugged drive matters more than reaching the interface’s advertised peak, or if your host supports USB 3.2 Gen 2×2.
- Look elsewhere if your main reason for buying is to get 2,000MB/s on a Mac. AppleInsider’s review names higher-speed USB4/Thunderbolt 8TB options from Glyph and OWC, but models, prices, and availability change; confirm the connection and current specifications before choosing.
Lexar includes a cable supporting Type-C and USB-A connections, which helps with physical port compatibility. It does not change the host’s supported USB mode, so an adapter or alternate port cannot make a Mac negotiate Gen 2×2.

AppleInsider and StorageReview both noted that the rubberized exterior can pick up dust or lint. StorageReview also noted the design has no lanyard or clip attachment point. Those practical details matter if the drive will be carried loose in a bag or used in dusty environments.
What about security, warranty, and phone compatibility?
Lexar lists DataShield software with 256-bit AES encryption and a five-year limited warranty. Encryption can protect data at rest when configured and used appropriately; it is not a backup or data-recovery guarantee. Lexar disclaims liability for lost data or images, and the stated exclusions for liquid, dust, and drop damage still apply.
