The Space Shuttle did not have one constant speed. It accelerated throughout its powered climb, reached roughly 17,300–17,500 mph (about 28,000 km/h) in orbit, began atmospheric entry at approximately orbital speed, and slowed to about 215–226 mph for touchdown.
The exact figure depends on the phase, mission, reference source, and whether the number is rounded. The most useful way to answer the question is therefore to follow the Shuttle from booster separation through orbit, entry, approach, and landing.
Space Shuttle speeds at a glance
| Flight phase | Representative speed | What the number means |
|---|---|---|
| Powered ascent after solid-rocket-booster separation | From about 3,000 mph to more than 17,000 mph in roughly six minutes | Main-engine acceleration during the final part of the climb; NASA also lists a Shuttle velocity of 17,321 mph |
| Orbit | About 17,300–17,500 mph (approximately 28,000 km/h) | A rounded low-Earth-orbit speed, not a guaranteed identical value on every mission |
| Atmospheric-entry interface | More than 17,000 mph, close to Mach 25 | The speed at the beginning of the atmospheric-entry phase, around 400,000 feet |
| High-speed approach | About 424 mph at one approach point; nearly 360 mph two miles from the runway | Representative NASA Langley profile values during the unpowered descent |
| Touchdown | About 215 mph; another NASA profile gives 364 kph (226 mph) | Approximate landing speeds that vary with mission and flight profile |
NASA’s general Shuttle overview and engine history provide the ascent figures, NASA Ames and the NASA History Office provide orbital references, and NASA Glenn, NASA Langley, and NASA’s flight-profile material describe entry and landing. The linked values are engineering reference points, not a claim that the orbiter held one speed continuously.
How fast was the Shuttle during launch?
Acceleration after booster separation
The launch was a continuously changing acceleration, not a single launch speed. While the two solid rocket boosters were attached, the vehicle was still building speed and altitude. After the boosters separated, the three main engines continued pushing the orbiter and external tank toward orbital velocity.

NASA states that, after the solid rockets were jettisoned, the main engines accelerated the Shuttle from 4,828 kilometers per hour (3,000 mph) to more than 27,358 kilometers per hour (17,000 mph) in about six minutes. You can read that wording in NASA’s Space Shuttle overview. NASA’s engine recordation page likewise describes main-engine-powered flight as lasting about eight and a half minutes: History of the Space Shuttle Main Engines.
Those numbers describe a span of acceleration. The Shuttle was not traveling 3,000 mph for the entire six-minute interval, nor did it instantly jump to 17,000 mph at the end. Its speed increased every second while the engines supplied thrust and the vehicle followed its ascent trajectory.
Why “17,321 mph” appears in NASA material
NASA’s overview lists the Shuttle’s velocity as 17,321 mph. That is a useful reference value for the vehicle’s near-orbital velocity, but it should not be read as the speed at liftoff or as a universal maximum for every mission. Orbital insertion conditions, payload, trajectory, and the point at which speed is recorded can change the reported number by a small amount.

How fast did the Shuttle travel in orbit?
Once in low Earth orbit, the orbiter was moving at roughly 17,300 to 17,500 miles per hour, or about 28,000 kilometers per hour. NASA Ames gives the rounded figure of about 17,500 mph (28,000 km/h) in its 2020 Interesting Fact of the Month. The NASA History Office’s account of STS-1 records Columbia’s orbital speed as approximately 17,322 statute mph: Columbia.
The range is more honest than choosing one apparently exact number. “17,500 mph” is a rounded educational figure; “17,321 mph” and “17,322 statute mph” preserve more digits from particular NASA references. All of them describe the same basic fact: the Shuttle needed a speed near 28,000 km/h to remain in low Earth orbit.
Speed versus velocity
NASA sometimes labels the figure as velocity. In everyday writing, people usually say speed, but velocity technically includes direction as well as magnitude. The orbiter’s direction continually changed as it followed its orbit around Earth, while the quoted miles-per-hour value describes the magnitude of its motion at a particular point or under a stated reference condition.

Was orbit the Shuttle’s top speed?
For a practical answer, yes: the Shuttle’s highest commonly quoted flight speed was its orbital speed, roughly 17,500 mph. It did not launch at that speed, and it did not retain it while landing. “Top speed” should therefore be qualified as the speed reached during orbital flight or at the start of atmospheric entry, rather than presented as a single speedometer reading for the entire mission.

What speed did it have when reentering the atmosphere?
Entry interface is still near orbital speed
The Shuttle began the atmospheric-entry phase at more than 17,000 mph, approximately Mach 25. The NASA History Office’s Rogers Commission report, Chapter 1, describes entry at over 17,000 mph and about Mach 25. NASA Glenn gives a typical low-Earth-orbit reentry speed near 17,500 mph and says the Mach number is nearly 25 in its Re-Entry Aircraft explainer.
A NASA flight-profile reference places the entry interface at 400,000 feet. That altitude marks the beginning of the defined atmospheric-entry segment in the profile; it does not mean the orbiter suddenly encountered a wall of air or dropped immediately to landing speed.

Why Mach 25 is only an approximation
Mach number compares an object’s speed with the local speed of sound. The speed of sound changes with atmospheric temperature and altitude, so Mach 25 is not a fixed miles-per-hour conversion throughout the descent. For comparing Shuttle phases, mph or km/h is clearer. Mach 25 is best treated as an approximate entry benchmark tied to the upper-atmosphere conditions, not as a precision measurement valid at every altitude.
How the orbiter shed speed
After entry, the orbiter used its atmosphere-interacting flight path and aerodynamic maneuvers to lose enormous amounts of energy. The speed fell from the near-orbital entry value through the hypersonic and supersonic portions of descent before reaching the much slower approach speeds measured near the runway. The transition took place over the entire entry and descent profile, not at one discrete braking event.
How fast was the Shuttle during descent and landing?
Approach speeds
NASA Langley’s Aeronautics of the Space Shuttle page gives about 424 mph at one approach point and nearly 360 mph two miles from the runway. These are profile points during the final descent, when the orbiter was already far below its entry speed but still moving much faster than a conventional touchdown.

Touchdown speed
NASA Langley describes touchdown at about 215 mph. A separate NASA flight-profile document, The Space Shuttle and Its Operations, gives a representative landing speed of 364 kph (226 mph). The 11-mph difference is not a contradiction: touchdown speed could vary with vehicle weight, runway, atmospheric conditions, and the particular profile being summarized.
In either case, the important scale is clear. The Shuttle landed at a few hundred miles per hour, not at thousands of miles per hour. Its wheels touched the runway only after aerodynamic deceleration had removed almost all of its orbital energy.
Why do official Shuttle speed figures differ?
Different phases are being measured
A number can refer to booster separation, the end of main-engine operation, orbital flight, entry interface, a point on final approach, or wheel touchdown. Comparing values without naming the phase makes accurate figures appear inconsistent.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Rounded references versus mission-specific records
NASA Ames uses a rounded 17,500-mph orbital figure, while the STS-1 history records approximately 17,322 statute mph for Columbia. One is a general educational reference; the other is associated with a specific mission history. Neither should be generalized into an exact speed for every Shuttle flight.
Units and terminology
Some sources use statute miles per hour, some use kilometers per hour, and some use Mach number. Converting and rounding can create small differences. For example, 17,500 mph is commonly paired with 28,000 km/h, while a more precise mph figure may convert to a slightly different kilometer-per-hour value. Keep the original unit and the qualifier “about” when quoting a rounded source.
A phase-by-phase way to answer the question
- For launch: say that the Shuttle accelerated from about 3,000 mph to over 17,000 mph in roughly six minutes after booster separation, with main-engine-powered flight lasting about 8.5 minutes.
- For orbit: use roughly 17,300–17,500 mph, or about 28,000 km/h, and identify whether the figure is a general NASA reference or a mission-specific value.
- For reentry: state that atmospheric entry began near orbital speed, over 17,000 mph and approximately Mach 25, at an entry interface listed around 400,000 feet.
- For landing: distinguish approach from touchdown: NASA references cite about 424 mph at one approach point, nearly 360 mph two miles out, and roughly 215–226 mph at touchdown.
The simplest accurate answer
The Space Shuttle accelerated rapidly during its approximately eight-and-a-half-minute powered climb, rather than launching at orbital speed. It traveled around 17,300–17,500 mph while in orbit and began reentry at approximately that speed, close to Mach 25. Aerodynamic descent then reduced its speed to roughly 215–226 mph when the wheels touched down. Quoting the flight phase and retaining the word “about” is the most accurate way to report the Shuttle’s speed.
