There is no dependable single distance for a Wi-Fi access point: the usable signal depends on the frequency band, walls and other building materials, interference, access-point placement, and the device connecting to it. A device may detect a network beyond the area where the connection remains useful for its needs.

What does Wi-Fi range actually mean?

Wi-Fi range is best understood as the area where a particular device can maintain a connection that works for its task—not simply the farthest point where the network name appears. Signal detection alone does not guarantee a reliable or fast connection, and the official guidance cited here does not establish a universal indoor or outdoor distance in feet or meters.

Coverage varies with both the access point and the receiving device. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) recommends placing a home router centrally to maximize coverage. Aruba’s enterprise campus-design guidance also identifies wall attenuation, interference, client density, and access-point elevation as factors to consider when planning coverage.

How do 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and 6 GHz differ in range?

Band What the cited guidance says about coverage Context
2.4 GHz The FCC says its coverage is longer than 5 GHz. FCC consumer guidance; this is a general comparison, not a range guarantee for a particular home.
5 GHz The FCC says it is faster but covers a shorter range than 2.4 GHz. It may also be less crowded by neighboring Wi-Fi networks and offer more stable connections. FCC consumer guidance; results depend on the building and connected device.
6 GHz Aruba says propagation losses are greater than at 5 GHz and that walls and other structures attenuate it more. In open spaces, coverage differences may be less pronounced than in enclosed environments. Aruba enterprise deployment guidance, not a measured household-range promise.

These comparisons describe broad behavior, not a guarantee that a particular band will perform better in every room. Building layout and obstructions can change the practical result.

What can shorten usable coverage?

  • Walls and other structures: Building materials and intervening structures attenuate signals. Aruba’s guidance notes this especially for 6 GHz compared with 5 GHz.
  • Placement and elevation: The access point’s position affects how well coverage reaches the areas where devices are used. The FCC advises placing a home router centrally.
  • Interference and client density: Other signals and the number of clients are among the factors Aruba identifies for deployment planning.
  • The receiving device: A network’s practical reach is measured by the connection a device can use, not just what the access point broadcasts.

How can you improve Wi-Fi coverage at home?

Start by identifying where the connection is weak and considering the route between that area and the router. The FCC names central router placement, range extenders, and mesh network routers as possible ways to improve signal strength throughout a home. Which approach fits depends on the home’s layout and obstructions; the cited guidance does not establish a universal winner.

  • Try a more central router location when the existing placement is off to one side or tucked away from the areas that need coverage.
  • Consider a range extender when you need to address a particular weak area.
  • Consider a mesh network when you need coverage across multiple areas of the home.

For a device that supports a wired connection, Ethernet can connect it directly to the router and relieve Wi-Fi congestion, as the FCC notes. This is a wired alternative, not a way to extend wireless range.

How should you judge whether coverage is enough?

Check the connection where you actually use the device and for the task that matters to you. A visible network name is not, by itself, evidence that performance will be adequate. If coverage is poor, assess router placement and the intervening walls or structures before deciding whether an extender or mesh system suits the layout. Neither a stated distance nor a stronger transmitter alone can promise a usable connection in every location.
