There is no single reliable distance figure for a quadruped robot on one charge. The manufacturer specifications available for representative models report battery runtime, not a measured distance under a defined route, payload, and terrain. Unitree lists roughly 1–2 hours for several Go2 configurations and about 2–4 hours for the EDU long-endurance configuration; Boston Dynamics lists 90 minutes average runtime for Spot. Those are time estimates, not promises of how far a robot will travel.
Why there is no universal distance-per-charge answer
A robot’s travel distance depends on how long it can operate and how quickly it moves while operating. A useful first estimate is:
Estimated distance = average speed while moving × time spent moving
The important words are “average” and “time spent moving.” Maximum speed multiplied by advertised runtime would assume the robot moves continuously at top speed until its battery is exhausted. The published specifications do not establish that scenario as a measured range test. Real missions include turns, pauses, task activity, and changes in terrain or payload; those conditions can affect both speed and runtime.

Distance also needs a clear definition. A robot that travels 1 kilometre away from its starting point has covered 1 kilometre one way, but would need to cover roughly 2 kilometres to return along the same route. For a mission that must finish at its starting point, plan around the complete out-and-back route—not just the distance to the destination—and include a battery reserve rather than assuming all advertised runtime is available for travel.
What the published specifications say
The manufacturer figures below help compare the kind of information available, but they are not standardized range-test results. The models have different configurations, and neither manufacturer page cited here gives a comparable distance-per-charge figure for a defined route.

| Robot and configuration | Published battery/runtime information | Published speed information | What the figures establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Unitree Go2 AIR, PRO, and X | About 1–2 hours of battery life, according to Unitree’s configuration table. The listed standard battery is 8,000 mAh (236.8 Wh). | Unitree lists performance speed from 0 to 2.5 m/s and a maximum running speed of approximately 5 m/s tested in a lab. | These are runtime, battery, and speed specifications—not a tested distance per charge. Unitree says parameters can vary by scenario and configuration. Unitree Go2 specifications |
| Unitree Go2 EDU, long-endurance configuration | About 2–4 hours of battery life in Unitree’s configuration table. The long-endurance battery is shown as 15,000 mAh. | The product page also lists the speed specifications above; it does not convert them into a range for this configuration. | The longer runtime applies to the listed EDU long-endurance configuration; it does not guarantee a particular route distance. Confirm that a robot listing and battery match the exact model. Unitree Go2 specifications |
| Boston Dynamics Spot | 90 minutes average runtime and 564 Wh battery capacity. | Maximum speed: 1.6 m/s. | Boston Dynamics does not state a guaranteed distance per charge alongside these specifications and warns that runtime varies with payloads and environmental factors. Boston Dynamics Spot specifications |
The Go2’s approximately 5 m/s maximum running speed is identified as a laboratory-tested maximum, while the product page separately lists performance speed from 0 to 2.5 m/s. Neither number should be treated as the average speed a robot will sustain throughout a working mission. Spot’s 1.6 m/s figure is also a maximum speed, not a range-test speed. Multiplying either model’s maximum speed by its runtime would produce a theoretical arithmetic result, not a manufacturer-verified travel distance.

For planning, use the exact robot and battery configuration that will do the work. Measure or obtain its average moving speed and its runtime under conditions as close as possible to the intended mission. Then account for time when it is stopped or performing a task, and decide whether the target is one-way distance or a complete route with a return leg.

- Identify the exact model and battery. Record the robot variant and battery version. On Go2, Unitree lists standard and long-endurance batteries; its runtime figures vary by configuration. Do not assume that a battery advertised for one Go2 configuration will fit or deliver the same runtime in another—confirm compatibility for the specific unit. Unitree Go2 specifications
- Define the route and outcome. Write down the planned path, including turns, slopes, surface changes, obstacles, and whether the robot must return to its start. A destination distance alone is not enough to size a battery for a round trip.
- Separate moving time from total mission time. Estimate how much of the battery runtime will be spent walking versus waiting, turning, inspecting, carrying out a task, or otherwise not making forward progress. Only moving time multiplied by an appropriate moving-speed average estimates distance covered.
- Measure average speed in representative conditions. Use a timed trial with the intended payload, gait, route surface, and operating pattern if possible. A maximum-speed specification is not a substitute. If a supplier provides a distance figure, ask how it was measured and whether its route and operating conditions match yours.
- Calculate and sanity-check the result. Multiply average speed while moving by moving time, using consistent units. For example, if a hypothetical robot averaged 0.5 m/s while moving for 60 minutes, the arithmetic gives 1,800 metres (1.8 km) of movement. This is only an illustration of the calculation, not a specification or expected result for Go2, Spot, or another robot.
- Plan a reserve and test the full task. Battery use can vary from one mission to another. Run the complete intended route—including the return, stops, and work activity—before depending on the estimate for an operation where reaching a particular point matters. The manufacturer figures cited here do not specify a universal reserve percentage.
What changes real-world travel distance
When asking a manufacturer, dealer, or robot operator for a range number, request the conditions alongside the number. A distance without its test setup is difficult to apply to another mission.
- Payload: Added equipment or carried loads can change runtime. Boston Dynamics explicitly says Spot runtime may vary with payloads. Spot specifications
- Terrain and route: Surface, slope, obstacles, and the number of turns affect what the robot has to do. The cited product pages do not provide a common route protocol that would let readers compare range directly across models.
- Speed and gait: A high top speed does not describe the average pace over a task. Ask for average speed during the same kind of movement your route requires, rather than relying on a maximum figure.
- Duty cycle: Time spent stopped, turning, waiting, or doing work reduces the portion of runtime available for forward travel. A mission’s elapsed time and its moving time are not interchangeable.
- Operating environment: Boston Dynamics identifies environmental factors as a reason Spot runtime can vary. Unitree likewise cautions that Go2 parameters may vary by scenario and configuration. The cited pages do not quantify a universal adjustment for temperature or surface, so avoid applying an unsupported percentage.
- Battery and configuration: Go2’s listed endurance differs across configurations, including the EDU long-endurance option. Verify the battery actually supplied with the robot rather than relying on a model-family headline.

- Exact model, configuration, battery version, and battery condition.
- Payload installed or carried during the measurement.
- Route surface, incline, distance, turns, and obstacles.
- Gait, average speed while moving, and whether the robot walked continuously.
- Operating temperature and other environmental conditions.
- Time spent moving versus stopped or performing work.
- Whether the claimed figure is runtime, one-way distance, total distance travelled, or a round trip with a return to the starting point.
- Whether the number comes from a manufacturer specification, an actual route test, or an estimate.
For example, “90 minutes of runtime” and “a 1-kilometre one-way route” answer different questions. A useful route result should identify the robot and battery, describe the conditions, and clarify whether the robot completed the route with enough battery to return or continue working. The manufacturer pages cited here do not establish one shared route test for Go2 and Spot, so their runtime and maximum-speed figures should not be ranked as though they were direct range measurements.

Go2 battery options
Unitree lists both standard and long-endurance Go2 battery versions. Its product information gives the standard battery as 8,000 mAh (236.8 Wh) and shows the long-endurance battery as 15,000 mAh in the model table. The EDU long-endurance configuration is associated with about 2–4 hours of battery life, compared with about 1–2 hours for AIR, PRO, and X in the configuration table. These are the manufacturer’s listed runtime figures, not a promise that swapping batteries or selecting a larger one will yield a specific extra distance. Check battery compatibility and the configuration included with the exact robot before relying on an advertised option. Unitree Go2 specifications

Spot charging between tasks
Boston Dynamics describes the Spot Dock as a self-charging station. Its support information says additional docks can be placed around larger sites to extend operating range. That can reduce the need to return to one central charging point, but it is an operational charging approach—not a claim that Spot can travel a particular distance on one charge. About the Spot Dock Self-Charging Station
What to ask before relying on a robot for a route
If a mission depends on a quadruped reaching a destination and coming back, ask the manufacturer or seller for a route measurement under the intended conditions. A precise request might specify the model and battery, payload, route surface and incline, gait, operating temperature, expected stops and task activity, and whether the result must include a return trip. Ask for both the measured distance and the remaining battery at the end, if available. The cited specifications do not provide a universal distance-per-charge figure or a common route protocol, so a mission-specific measurement is more useful than converting headline runtime and maximum speed into a range claim.
In short, the published figures support estimates of operating time, not a definitive answer in kilometres. Treat distance as a mission-specific result: measure the robot moving at its realistic average pace, under the intended load and conditions, and include the route back if the job requires one.
