Most Mars rovers cover tens of meters on a normal sol, while an unusually favorable drive can reach several hundred meters. Curiosity averaged 28.9 meters per sol during its first seven years, Perseverance has completed a 319.8-meter sol, and NASA reported in October 2026 that Perseverance’s high-end capability can reach up to 412 meters in one sol. Those figures describe different things—an historical average, an achieved record, and a stated capability—not a standard daily mileage.

What “a day” means on Mars

Rover teams normally measure driving by a sol, the Martian day. A sol is slightly longer than an Earth day, so “meters per sol” is the most precise way to describe a rover’s daily travel. Converting every figure into Earth-day mileage can create false precision because the rover may not drive continuously and its work schedule changes from sol to sol.

A rover’s daily distance is also different from its maximum speed. Speed is the rate while the wheels are turning; daily distance includes time spent taking images, checking systems, communicating, performing science, waiting for power or sunlight, and stopping when the route is uncertain.

How far the major rovers have actually traveled

Rover or figure Distance What the number means Qualification
Curiosity 28.9 m per sol Average drive distance Jet Propulsion Laboratory mobility study covering the first seven years, published in 2019
Curiosity, Sol 340 100.3 m Longest one-day drive reported at the time NASA/JPL report from 2013; favorable visibility and route planning helped
Curiosity study range 2.6 cm to 142.5 m Observed distances on individual sols Range in the seven-year JPL study, not a promise for every sol
Opportunity 228 m in one day Reported maximum daily distance NASA Science, 2022; smooth terrain and solar power were noted
Perseverance, Sol 351 319.8 m Achieved one-sol record in NASA’s 2022 comparison Several hours of driving over smooth terrain enabled rapid progress
Perseverance Up to 412 m per sol Reported high-end capability NASA/JPL, October 2026; this is not a typical daily distance
Perseverance, October 11, 2026 91.31 m on that drive One reported drive that helped set a cumulative record NASA reported the rover passed Opportunity’s total-distance record
Perseverance cumulative odometer 28.10 mi (45.22 km) Total mission distance Reported October 11, 2026; a lifetime total is not a one-sol range

The cleanest practical answer is therefore a range: tens of meters on many ordinary sols, roughly 100 meters on a strong Curiosity drive, and several hundred meters for an exceptional or high-capability Perseverance drive. Treating 412 meters as Perseverance’s normal daily mileage would misread a capability figure.

Curiosity: why the average is much lower than the record

The seven-year average

A 2019 JPL mobility study found that Curiosity averaged 28.9 meters per sol over its first seven years. Individual sols varied from only 2.6 centimeters to 142.5 meters. The average includes sols devoted to science, imaging, route assessment, and cautious movement, so it is more useful for understanding routine operations than a record drive.

The 100.3-meter Sol 340 drive

NASA/JPL reported a 100.3-meter drive on Sol 340 in 2013. Rover planner Paolo Bellutta explained that the rover began from a high point with a good view for planning a safe route. Mastcam images helped planners judge the size of rocks and determine that they were not hazards. A section ahead that could not be seen clearly required routing around it. The result shows how visibility can be as important as wheel speed.

Perseverance and the several-hundred-meter scale

The 319.8-meter record

NASA Science reported in April 2022 that Perseverance had driven 319.8 meters on Sol 351. The rover made rapid progress by spending several hours driving across comparatively smooth ground. This was an achieved record in that comparison, not a guaranteed distance for every sol.

The 412-meter capability

In October 2026, NASA/JPL described Perseverance as capable of driving as much as 412 meters in one sol. “Capability” indicates what the vehicle and its navigation system can support under suitable conditions. It does not say that the rover routinely travels that far, nor that every route offers enough safe, visible ground.

The cumulative record is a different measurement

NASA reported that a 91.31-meter drive on October 11, 2026, helped Perseverance pass Opportunity’s total-distance record. Its cumulative odometer was reported as 28.10 miles (45.22 kilometers). That figure answers how far the rover has traveled over its mission, not how far it can drive in one Martian day.

Terrain and visibility are usually the first limits

Mars is not a test track. Rocks can damage wheels, sand can trap them, and craters, cliffs, and steep slopes can make a route unsafe. Before moving, a rover uses cameras and onboard software to build an understanding of the ground ahead. If the route is ambiguous, planners may choose a shorter path, add waypoints, gather more images, or stop.

How the navigation systems work

Perseverance’s AutoNav builds three-dimensional terrain maps, identifies hazards, and selects a safe path around them. It can analyze images while moving instead of stopping after every short segment to process new imagery. Human operators still select destinations and establish safety constraints; autonomy does not mean unsupervised driving toward an unknown target.

Curiosity planners use stereo Navcam and Mastcam imagery to inspect the route. Its wheel odometry can be checked against visual odometry from before-and-after images. If those measurements disagree because of slip, the driving plan can include a slip threshold and stop the rover when the threshold is exceeded. Curiosity also has tilt limits that restrict unsafe slopes.

Wheel slip, slopes, and mechanical health

Commanded wheel rotation is not the same as ground distance. A wheel can spin while the rover moves only slightly, especially on loose material or a slope. Slip wastes drive time and can increase the risk of digging in. Visual odometry gives controllers another estimate of actual movement, allowing them to detect a mismatch with wheel odometry.

The JPL seven-year Curiosity study identified several primary mobility risks:

  • Wheel wear that reduces traction or structural margin.
  • Wheel entrapment in terrain from which the rover cannot easily back out.
  • Progressive wheel sinkage that embeds the rover.
  • Terrain interactions or hardware and cabling failures affecting steering or drive actuators.

These are documented mobility risks, not a prediction that every rover will suffer each failure. A route that is technically passable may still be rejected if it creates an unacceptable chance of damage or entrapment.

Speed and available driving time

Top speed is not daily range

NASA’s Curiosity overview gives a top speed of 4 centimeters per second on hard, flat ground and says its average is likely about half that. Perseverance’s driving explainer gives a top speed of 0.1 mile per hour and says it can drive more than 300 yards in a day while keeping the rover safe. Neither speed converts directly into a daily distance because the rover spends substantial time stopped for imaging, navigation, science, communications, and checks.

A high daily total requires not only a fast vehicle but also many hours in which the route remains safe enough to drive. Smooth, predictable terrain lets the rover chain together longer autonomous segments; rough or poorly visible terrain turns the same sol into a sequence of short moves and inspections.

Autonomy increases opportunity, not certainty

Perseverance’s autonomous navigation has been used for more than 90% of its total distance, according to NASA’s October 2026 report. The same report says it processes 600,000 terrain points with each look, compared with 20 points assessed by Sojourner. Those figures illustrate the growth in onboard navigation and explain how Perseverance can keep moving between Earth-planned instructions. They do not remove the need for hazard checks or guarantee a particular distance.

Communications impose a planning rhythm

Operators cannot joystick a Mars rover in real time. Depending on the planets’ positions, one-way light time between Earth and Mars varies from about 3 to 22.4 minutes. Mars’s rotation also leaves rovers without a line of sight to Earth for roughly 12 hours per day, according to NASA’s Mars Relay Network overview.

Teams therefore plan routes on Earth and transmit command sequences, often as waypoints. During the drive, onboard navigation checks the ground and can choose a safe local path or stop when conditions violate its rules. Communication delay shapes how much detail operators can provide and how often they can intervene, but it is not the sole number that sets the daily range. Terrain, power, science work, and safety decisions usually matter just as much.

Power and the work that competes with driving

Solar energy made Opportunity’s 228-meter daily maximum possible on smooth terrain, but that example is not a universal energy-to-distance conversion. Solar illumination, dust, season, terrain, rover design, and the energy required by computers and instruments all affect how much power can be assigned to driving.

A sol may be allocated partly or entirely to other mission tasks:

  • Collecting or analyzing scientific measurements.
  • Taking Mastcam, Navcam, or other images for route and science planning.
  • Preparing or conducting sample work.
  • Sending data through an orbiter or direct communications session.
  • Running health checks, thermal management, or repositioning maneuvers.

Curiosity’s mobility study specifically identifies science-sampling priorities as a factor that limited the use of autonomous driving. Perseverance’s route is likewise a scientific traverse toward the Jezero delta, not a race to maximize the odometer.

How to compare a rover-distance claim correctly

  1. Identify the measurement. Is it an average, an individual-sol record, a design or capability figure, or a cumulative odometer total?
  2. Check the rover and date. Curiosity’s 28.9-meter mean comes from a 2019 study; Perseverance’s 319.8-meter record is from NASA’s 2022 comparison; the 412-meter capability was reported in October 2026.
  3. Ask what terrain was involved. Smooth, visible ground supports longer drives than sand, rocks, craters, cliffs, or uncertain slopes.
  4. Look for autonomy and operator constraints. More onboard navigation can reduce waiting, but operators still set destinations and safety limits.
  5. Separate distance from speed. A top-speed specification says nothing about how many hours the rover can safely drive in that sol.
  6. Account for mission activity and power. Science, communications, system checks, sunlight, and thermal conditions can all reduce driving time.
  7. Keep units and time bases consistent. “Per sol” is a Martian-day measure; a mission total in miles or kilometers is not a daily figure.

Why Mars rovers do not simply drive farther

The limiting factor is rarely one component. A rover must find a route that is safe, visible enough to evaluate, mechanically acceptable, and worth the power and risk. If a camera view is incomplete, the route may need a detour. If wheels slip, the rover may stop to reassess. If a science target is important, the best decision may be to remain nearly stationary. If communications or power are unavailable, the next move may wait for a later planning cycle.

That combination explains the wide spread between Curiosity’s 28.9-meter historical average, its 142.5-meter single-sol maximum in the JPL study, Perseverance’s 319.8-meter achieved record, and the later 412-meter capability statement. The figures are compatible once their conditions and definitions are kept separate.

What future autonomy could change

NASA’s October 2026 report describes a direction toward kilometer-scale drives supported by generative artificial intelligence and other onboard tools that can reduce operator workload and flag scientifically interesting features in large image collections. That is a stated development goal, not a current daily-distance result. Present rovers still operate within the safety, power, terrain, and communications constraints described above.
