Family is a more common reported route into art collecting for Gen Z high-net-worth respondents than for collectors overall, while Instagram has become a notable purchase channel among surveyed collectors. Those findings help explain the headline’s claim that Gen Z is spending big, but they do not show that all young people are buying art—or that family wealth or Instagram alone causes higher spending.
What the surveys actually show
The clearest recent evidence comes from separate editions of the Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting. Each measures a particular group, period and behavior; their figures should not be combined as if they describe one moment.
| Finding | What it measures | Source and scope |
|---|---|---|
| 40% of Gen Z collectors named family as their primary route into collecting, compared with 28% of collectors overall. | A reported route into collecting—not the percentage whose purchases were paid for by inheritance. | UBS, 2026 survey; 3,100 high-net-worth individuals across 10 markets. UBS 2026 survey summary. |
| 51% of collectors made purchases through Instagram, up from 43% in 2023. | Reported Instagram purchases among surveyed collectors. | UBS summary of the 2025 survey. UBS 2025 survey summary. |
| Nearly 90% of Gen Z collectors who had inherited works kept them. | Retention among respondents who had inherited art; not the share of Gen Z collectors who inherited art. | UBS summary of the 2025 survey. UBS 2025 survey summary. |
| Gen Z respondents had the highest average expenditure on prints and digital art in that survey’s sample. | A category-specific spending result from an earlier survey, not a current overall spending ranking. | Art Basel and UBS, 2023 survey. Art Basel survey information. |
The 2026 survey covered high-net-worth respondents in the United States, United Kingdom, Mainland China, Hong Kong, France, Australia, Germany, Japan, Brazil and Singapore. A separate 2024 landing page describes research conducted in mid-2024 with just over 3,660 high-net-worth individuals across 14 markets; its population and survey period differ from the 2026 edition. The 2026 finding is about family as the primary route into collecting. That could reflect exposure to art, encouragement, introductions or other forms of access; the statistic does not isolate which influence mattered, and it does not say that 40% of Gen Z respondents funded art purchases with inherited money. The separate 2025 finding about keeping inherited works applies only to Gen Z respondents who had inherited works.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Both results concern high-net-worth survey participants, not Gen Z as a whole. They cannot establish how common art collecting is among young adults generally, how much money a typical Gen Z buyer spends, or whether family support caused any particular purchase.
How Instagram fits into the buying journey
The 2025 survey summary’s 51% figure indicates that Instagram was a purchase channel for a substantial share of surveyed collectors. It does not establish that every purchase began on the platform, that Instagram was the sole sales channel, or that the result applies specifically to Gen Z. The rise from 43% in the 2023 survey is a comparison reported by UBS across those survey editions, not proof that the platform alone drove the change.

Art Basel also recounts an individual example: a collector discovered an artist at the Noguchi Museum, contacted her on Instagram, visited her studio and acquired a work directly. It illustrates one possible path from discovery to a direct purchase, but it is an anecdote, not a representative survey result. Art Basel: “What Gen Z really wants from the art market”.
Why the headline needs qualification
“Spending big” is a broad framing, not a quantified conclusion established by these findings. The strongest spending-related result in the cited material is the 2023 sample’s relative expenditure on prints and digital art; it does not show that Gen Z currently spends more than other generations across all art categories. The family statistic concerns access into collecting, and the Instagram statistic concerns purchase participation—not purchase values.

Taken together, the surveys point to family connections as an important entry route for some wealthy young collectors and to Instagram as a purchase channel for collectors overall. They do not establish returns, affordability, typical prices, or a generational spending total. Readers should treat the figures as evidence about surveyed high-net-worth collectors in specified survey years, not the whole art market.
