Fabric holds together through more than the strength of its fibers. Friction between fibers and yarns, the way yarn is twisted, and the arrangement of yarns or loops all shape whether a textile slides, stretches, stiffens or breaks. Recent studies illuminate different parts of that picture—but they do not establish one universal rule for every fabric.
Why fabric cohesion depends on structure
A textile is a structure built from smaller structures. Fibers contact one another inside a yarn; yarns cross or loop together to form fabric. Friction can resist sliding at each level, while the arrangement and tension of those elements influence how force travels through the material.
That is why findings about a woven reinforcement, a knitted fabric and a staple-fiber yarn should not be treated as interchangeable. Each study examines a different structure and response: tow sliding, stitch-driven elasticity or tension transmission through fibers.
How woven reinforcements resist tow sliding
In woven reinforcements, crossing yarn bundles, often called tows, can slide relative to one another. A 2020 experimental study examined vegetal and synthetic fabric reinforcements using friction tests and out-of-plane pull-out tests. It identifies friction between tows as a major contributor to cohesion, alongside weave, fabric tension and the degree of in-plane shear. The concern is especially relevant when reinforcement fabrics are formed during manufacturing, where sliding or gaps can become defects. The study’s abstract and findings describe how those factors relate to tow cohesion.

The reported effect of tension depended on the fabric’s shear state: increasing transverse tow tension improved cohesion in low-shear regions, while in-plane shear improved cohesion in highly sheared zones. This is a result for the tested reinforcement contexts, not a general prescription for increasing the strength of clothing fabric.
How knitted loops change stretch and stiffness
Knitted fabric is made from interlocking loops rather than crossing woven yarn systems. Its stitch type and topology—the pattern of how loops connect—can affect the material’s bulk mechanical response, even when the yarn itself does not stretch much.

Stitch topology and extensibility
A 2024 study in Nature Communications investigated how stitch-by-stitch design can program the mechanics of knitted materials. Its description reports that fabrics combining knit and purl stitches were more extensible under the same applied stress than examples made from only one stitch type. In other words, loop arrangement can contribute substantially to how readily a knit extends. The paper also emphasizes that the entangled knitted structure helps hold the material together along seamless interfaces.
Stitch packing and jamming
A 2025 Georgia Tech report describes how tightly packed stitches can jam and make a knit resist stretching, with yarn properties also influencing the behavior. The work points toward possible ways to engineer knits for applications such as wearable electronics and soft robotics; those are research directions, not evidence that such materials are already commercially ready. How twist helps staple-fiber yarn transmit tension
In staple yarn, shorter fibers are spun together rather than running continuously along the yarn. Twisting brings fibers into contact, and friction at those contacts helps resist their relative sliding. An Institute of Physics of Rennes explainer describes this process for cotton: as twist increases, frictional forces between fibers rise until contacts prevent relative motion. A 2018 Physical Review Letters paper examined tension transmission in staple yarn using abstract models in which Amontons–Coulomb friction laws turn the problem into one of finding feasible tensions among fiber elements. The authors report a percolation transition: above a threshold in the model, transmitted tension is in principle unbounded. They identify mean slack in the constraints as an order parameter and associate the transition with a change from ductile to brittle failure and a substantial increase in mechanical strength. These are model-based results, not a universal measured threshold for consumer textiles. The paper sets out the model and its conclusions.

The common thread is that textile behavior depends on how components interact, not simply on what the fibers are made of. But the studies do not provide a matched comparison that ranks woven, knitted and spun structures by overall strength, nor do they establish a single formula that predicts how every garment will behave.
