An exciton condensate is a coherent collective state of electrically neutral electron–hole pairs. It resembles a superconductor because both states have an ordered condensate and support collective phase behavior, but a superconductor condenses charged Cooper pairs. It is also a type of Bose–Einstein condensate in the broad sense that excitons are composite bosons, yet it is not the same as the familiar atomic BEC of ultracold atoms.
The practical distinction is the constituent and the platform: excitons usually form in semiconductor bilayers or coupled quantum wells, atomic BECs form from atoms in a dilute gas, and superconductors form from charged pairs in an electronic material. Those differences determine what experiments measure, whether electrical transport is possible, how light interacts with the condensate, and how dissipation limits real devices.
What an exciton condensate is
An exciton is an electron–hole pair
An exciton consists of an electron bound to a positively charged hole. The hole is not a new fundamental particle; it represents an unoccupied state in a semiconductor’s valence band and behaves as a positively charged quasiparticle. In a bilayer structure, electrons can occupy one layer while holes are associated with the other, allowing the two charges to bind across the layers.

Condensation means macroscopic coherence
Individual excitons can exist without forming a condensate. Exciton condensation occurs when a large population develops a shared quantum phase and coherent order. The condensate is therefore a many-body state: the important feature is not merely that electrons and holes are bound, but that many bound pairs behave coherently.
Semiconductor experiments commonly use two closely spaced conducting layers or coupled quantum wells. The geometry helps electrons and holes remain correlated while allowing researchers to drive current in each layer separately. Electrical measurements can then reveal coherence even though each exciton as a whole is electrically neutral.
Neutral does not mean experimentally invisible
An exciton carries no net electric charge because its electron and hole charges cancel. Nevertheless, creating or moving correlated pairs changes the charge distribution in the separate layers. A bilayer can therefore show striking electrical signatures associated with the condensate. Those signatures should not be described as ordinary current carried by charged excitons: the neutral pair and the layer-resolved currents are different parts of the experiment.

Exciton condensates versus superconductors
| Feature | Superconductor | Exciton condensate |
|---|---|---|
| Condensing entity | Charged Cooper pairs formed from electrons | Electron–hole excitons, which are composite bosons |
| Net charge of the pair | Nonzero; the pair carries electrical charge | Zero; electron and hole charges cancel |
| Typical setting | An electronic material with superconducting pairing | Often a semiconductor bilayer or coupled quantum wells |
| Most useful transport language | Charge current and superconducting electrical response | Layer-resolved transport, counterflow and coherence |
| Important limitation | Pairing analogy does not by itself specify the microscopic mechanism in every material | Neutrality and disorder mean that condensate coherence does not guarantee universal zero resistance |
What the analogy gets right
Both systems can be described using an order parameter with a collective phase. A phase-coherent condensate can support phenomena such as vortices and unusual responses to probes that disturb the phase. This is why Eisenstein wrote that a bilayer electron system can condense into a state resembling a superconductor, with excitons replacing Cooper pairs.
In both cases, the condensate is a collective state rather than a gas of independent particles. The analogy is especially useful for understanding why a bilayer can display a coordinated response across macroscopic distances.
Why the analogy stops short
Cooper pairs in a conventional superconductor are charged. Their collective motion directly contributes to electrical current, and superconducting theory is built around the response of a charged condensate to electromagnetic fields. Excitons are neutral. Their coherence links the two layers, but it does not turn the exciton into a charged current carrier.

Consequently, an exciton condensate should not be advertised as a material that automatically conducts electricity without resistance. The measured response depends on the device geometry, the observable being used, temperature, disorder and the particular condensate platform.
Counterflow is the key bilayer measurement
In a quantum Hall bilayer, researchers can drive equal currents in opposite directions in the two layers. This counterflow configuration is sensitive to interlayer phase coherence because the layer currents are coupled through the correlated electron–hole state. Strong counterflow signatures are evidence for coherent bilayer physics, but they do not mean that a neutral exciton is carrying a conventional net charge current through the sample.
The distinction matters when interpreting resistance measurements. A low or unusual counterflow resistance is a statement about a particular channel and geometry, not a universal claim that every electrical resistance vanishes.
Vortices and disorder impose real limits
The Nature review by J. P. Eisenstein and A. H. MacDonald emphasizes that disorder-induced mobile vortices can limit counterflow conductivity in quantum Hall excitonic condensates. Vortices are defects in the condensate phase. When disorder makes them mobile, they provide a dissipative route that degrades the idealized coherent response.
This is the main reason to avoid the shorthand that all exciton condensates have zero resistance. The condensate can produce highly coherent transport signatures while still experiencing dissipation in a real, imperfect device.
Is an exciton condensate a Bose–Einstein condensate?
BEC describes a collective state, not one substance
Bose–Einstein condensation is a general physical phenomenon in which bosonic particles or quasiparticles accumulate in a coherent many-body state. The phrase does not specify whether the bosons are atoms, molecules, photons, excitons or another composite object.

In the familiar dilute atomic BEC, the condensed particles are atoms cooled in a gas. In an exciton condensate, the bosons are electron–hole composites inside a semiconductor structure. Both can have macroscopic coherence, but their constituents, interactions, confinement and experimental probes are different.
Excitons are composite bosons
Electrons and holes are fermionic constituents, but a bound pair of them has bosonic composite behavior. That makes exciton condensation BEC-like in its statistics and collective organization. It does not make an exciton identical to an atom, nor does it mean that every population of excitons automatically condenses.
Composite particles also bring constraints that do not arise in exactly the same way for elementary or atomic bosons. Their internal electron–hole structure, the semiconductor environment and interactions with other carriers all affect whether a coherent phase forms and how long it survives.

The 2017 review by Monique Combescot, Roland Combescot and François Dubin highlights a platform-specific optical feature. In the dilute semiconductor regime, the ground-state exciton condensate can be dark because it is not coupled to light. A bright component can emerge above a density threshold, producing a condensate described as gray rather than purely dark.
Dark means optically inaccessible in the relevant radiative channel, not absent or non-quantum. Optical darkness should also not be generalized to every exciton-related condensate. The result depends on exciton density, momentum, spin and the details of the semiconductor system.
Bare excitons are not exciton–polaritons
An exciton–polariton is a hybrid light–matter quasiparticle formed when excitonic and photonic modes are strongly coupled. A polariton condensate therefore contains a substantial light component, unlike a condensate of bare semiconductor excitons.

Reviews of exciton–polariton Bose–Einstein condensates discuss long-range order, vortices and superfluid-like behavior at sufficient density, while also emphasizing dissipation and disorder. Those condensates are often studied through emitted light, making them optically accessible in a way that a dilute dark exciton ground state is not.
The distinction is more than terminology. A polariton system is an open, often dissipative optical platform, whereas indirect excitons in coupled quantum wells are primarily electron–hole composites whose coherence can be probed through bilayer transport and photoluminescence. Calling every polariton condensate a bare-exciton condensate erases the role of the photonic component and can lead to incorrect expectations about equilibrium, lifetime and transport.
How the three concepts compare
| System | What condenses or pairs | Where it is found | What a measurement primarily probes | Key caveat |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Superconductor | Charged Cooper pairs | Electronic material | Charge transport, magnetic response and phase coherence | The pairing analogy does not establish an identical mechanism for every material |
| Exciton condensate | Electron–hole excitons, composite bosons | Often semiconductor bilayers or coupled quantum wells | Interlayer coherence, counterflow and optical response | Neutral excitons can create electrical signatures without being charged current carriers; disorder can cause dissipation |
| Atomic BEC | Atoms behaving as bosons | Usually a dilute ultracold atomic gas | Atomic momentum distribution, interference and collective dynamics | BEC is the shared collective concept, not the same constituent or environment as an exciton condensate |
| Exciton–polariton condensate | Hybrid light–matter quasiparticles | Semiconductor microcavities and related optical structures | Emitted light, coherence, vortices and driven-dissipative behavior | It is a distinct platform and should not be labeled simply a bare-exciton condensate |
How researchers identify exciton condensation
Electrical evidence in bilayers
Researchers examine transport in each layer separately and compare ordinary drive configurations with counterflow. Correlated responses between the layers, together with quantum Hall conditions in the appropriate devices, can indicate interlayer phase coherence. The interpretation requires attention to contact resistance, disorder and the exact current path; a striking signal in one channel is not proof of zero resistance in all channels.
Optical evidence
Photoluminescence can reveal exciton populations and spatial coherence when the relevant excitons couple to light. The indirect-exciton literature includes experiments on photoluminescence and macroscopic spatial coherence. A weak optical signal does not by itself rule out a condensate because the ground state may be dark in the dilute regime.
Density and phase behavior
Density matters because interactions and optical selection rules change as the exciton population increases. The emergence of a bright component above a density threshold is therefore a platform-specific transition in optical visibility, not a universal definition of condensation. Researchers combine density dependence with transport, coherence and spectroscopic measurements rather than relying on one observation alone.

Why resistance claims need qualification
For a charged superconducting condensate, the phrase zero resistance refers to a defined electrical measurement under specified conditions. For a neutral exciton condensate, there is no single equivalent measurement that applies to every platform. Bilayer counterflow, single-layer transport and optical experiments interrogate different aspects of the state.

An idealized theory may predict dissipationless collective flow, but real samples contain disorder, finite temperature and phase defects. In quantum Hall bilayers, mobile vortices generated or pinned by disorder can limit counterflow conductivity. In polariton condensates, the system’s driven-dissipative nature and disorder also affect superfluid-like behavior. The accurate statement is that exciton-based condensates can show coherent and unusually low-dissipation responses in particular channels, not that every exciton condensate is universally resistance-free.
Where current research is heading
Van der Waals layered materials
A 2025 perspective in Nature Reviews Physics identifies van der Waals layered materials as a platform for studying exciton condensation. These atomically thin or layered systems offer new ways to engineer separation, screening and coupling between electronic states. The perspective discusses electrical transport and proposed routes toward higher-temperature condensation.
Those higher-temperature approaches are research directions, not established capabilities that readers can assume are available in ordinary devices. Demonstrating a robust condensate requires simultaneous control of interactions, disorder, density, temperature and phase coherence.

Thermal fluctuations disrupt phase coherence, while disorder can create mobile defects. Semiconductor excitons also have finite lifetimes and may recombine, depending on the structure and optical selection rules. These constraints make it difficult to translate a low-temperature laboratory state into a simple room-temperature component.
Layered materials may improve design flexibility, but they do not remove the need to distinguish equilibrium condensates from driven or dissipative states. Claims about practical applications should therefore be framed as future possibilities until transport and coherence remain robust under the intended operating conditions.
Common misconceptions, corrected
- An exciton is not an electron with a reduced charge. It is a bound electron–hole pair whose total charge is neutral.
- An exciton condensate is not automatically a superconductor. The analogy concerns coherent pairing and collective phase behavior; the carriers and electrical response differ.
- BEC is not synonymous with atomic gas. It is a type of collective state that can involve composite bosons such as excitons.
- Neutrality does not eliminate electrical signatures. In a bilayer, correlated layer currents and counterflow can reveal interlayer coherence.
- Electrical signatures do not prove universal zero resistance. Disorder-induced vortices and other dissipative processes can limit conductivity.
- Optical darkness is platform-specific. A dilute bare-exciton ground state may be dark, while a bright component can appear above a density threshold; polariton condensates are a separate light–matter system.
- A polariton condensate is not simply a bare-exciton condensate. Its mixed photonic character changes how it is created, observed and dissipates energy.
A practical way to keep the terminology straight
Ask four questions whenever a paper or demonstration uses the word condensate. First, what is the constituent: a charged Cooper pair, an electron–hole exciton, an atom or a light–matter polariton? Second, what is the net charge of that constituent? Third, where does the state live: an electronic solid, a semiconductor bilayer, an atomic gas or a microcavity? Fourth, what observable is being reported: charge resistance, counterflow, photoluminescence, interference, vortices or another probe?
Answering those questions prevents the most common category errors. It also explains why two experiments can both report condensation while producing very different signals. The shared idea is coherent many-body order; the measurable consequences come from the particle, environment and source of dissipation.
