Everlogue’s Reading Companion uses an approved book catalog to decide what it can recommend, while a separate retrieved knowledge base is intended to support factual answers about books. That distinction is the key to understanding the product: mood and reading history can shape a recommendation, but they do not authorize the companion to invent titles or facts.
What Everlogue’s Reading Companion does
Creator Sophia Castillo describes Everlogue as a reading home with a shared book catalog, private reader shelves, celebrity book-club selections, and Ask Everlogue. The companion invites prompts such as “What are you in the mood for?” or “What’s a book you loved and want something similar to?” Its stated purpose is to help answer the everyday question, “What should I read next?” Read Castillo’s project description.
The shared catalog began with selections from Reese’s Book Club, Oprah’s Book Club, Read with Jenna, and GMA Book Club. Readers can add personal library context by importing Goodreads CSVs for Want to Read, Currently Reading, and Read shelves. If a title is missing, a reader can request it for review rather than having it added automatically.
According to Castillo, the companion searches the approved catalog, may include appropriate Want to Read books, excludes books a signed-in reader has already read or is currently reading, and returns three recommendations with brief, personal, spoiler-free explanations. These are creator-described product rules, not independently verified behavior of the live app.

Recommendations and book questions use different sources
Everlogue’s two answer modes have different jobs. Recommendations draw candidates from structured catalog records; questions about a book are meant to draw factual support from retrieved source material. A catalog entry can therefore be recommendable even if the knowledge base has no article about it.
| Mode | What it uses | Useful for | Boundary |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catalog recommendation | Approved structured books and, for signed-in readers, shelf context | Mood-based discovery or a request for a book similar to one the reader liked | The book must be in the catalog and meet the eligibility rules Castillo describes. |
| Knowledge-base answer | Retrieved, indexed source material | Questions about a book’s premise, themes, club selection, or an author conversation | Factual claims are intended to be grounded in retrieved entries; coverage should not be assumed for every catalog book. |
Structured catalog for recommendations
Castillo says the recommendation path queries Sanity directly with GROQ through @sanity/client. Catalog fields such as descriptions and genres can help the application select and explain a suitable title. This means a book does not need a linked article or Knowledge Source entry to be eligible for recommendation.

Retrieved sources for factual answers
For questions about books, the creator describes a separate Sanity Context Knowledge Base seeded from six website sources, including book-club announcements, summaries, and author interviews. Castillo says the material was reviewed, checked for citations, and corrected. The agent’s stated instructions require it to retrieve material before answering, support factual claims with sources, and avoid unnecessary spoilers. Those instructions describe intended behavior, not an independent audit of answer accuracy.

Where Sanity Context fits—and where it does not
Sanity’s documentation describes Sanity Context as a hosted Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that gives agents schema-aware, read-only access to Sanity content. It can expose live dataset content or prepared knowledge-base material and includes tools for initial context, schema exploration, GROQ queries, and reading larger fields. Context is the content-access layer; it is not the agent loop that interprets a reader’s request or composes the response. Everlogue’s application and agent coordinate the interaction. The recommendation path also has a distinct catalog query described above, so it should not be conflated with knowledge-base retrieval.
How new books reach the catalog
The catalog is designed to grow without treating every discovered title as ready for publication. Castillo describes reader imports and requests as well as a Book Club Watch process monitoring Reese’s Book Club, GMA Book Club, Read with Jenna, and Oprah’s Book Club. The creator reports using four separately scheduled Sanity Functions because the clubs have different announcement patterns. Those schedules are the project’s watcher configuration, not verified current publication schedules for the clubs.

- Discover or request: A reader can request a missing title, or a watcher can find a possible book-club selection.
- Create a review record: A discovery becomes a structured record for review rather than an immediately published catalog book.
- Approve before publication: Editorial approval is the step that permits the title to enter the published catalog.
Castillo summarizes the editorial principle this way: “A title extracted from a webpage is evidence, not editorial truth.” That separation matters because an automated discovery can identify a likely title, but it does not establish that the title is correct or ready to publish.

Sanity’s documentation explains that Context access uses a read token and can be narrowed with a GROQ filter to constrain the documents an agent can see. The token should remain server-side. Castillo says Everlogue’s production dataset is private and its Context endpoint uses a server-side token with Viewer permission. These details describe the creator’s stated setup; they do not establish that the configuration has undergone an independent security audit.
Best Value
The product behavior and implementation details here come from Castillo’s project submissions dated October 4 and 5, 2026, alongside Sanity’s documentation. They do not establish recommendation quality through a controlled study, verified user outcomes, or comprehensive coverage of all books. Castillo also reported an estimated combined model cost of about $0.015 for two live test questions; that two-question example is not a general cost estimate or forecast.
