A Eurobond is not necessarily denominated in euros. The term commonly describes an international bond-market category; the currency in which the bond promises to pay interest and principal is a separate feature. For an investor, three questions therefore need separate answers: what the bond pays, what it costs at the current market price, and what those payments will be worth after conversion into the investor’s reference currency.

What is a Eurobond?

A bond is a debt security. The issuer borrows money and agrees to pay interest and repay principal under the bond’s terms, subject to its ability to meet those obligations. A Eurobond, in common market usage, is an international bond issue—not a promise that the bond’s payments are in euros.

The terminology can vary by context. The Bank for International Settlements (BIS) classifies international debt securities by the market where they are issued relative to the borrower’s local market, and treats currency denomination as a separate characteristic. That distinction is more useful to an investor than relying on the word “Eurobond” alone. Read the issue’s documentation to identify the issuer, issue market, denomination currency, payment terms, and other conditions. See the BIS FAQ on debt securities statistics and its international debt securities overview.

In practical terms, a bond can be international in its issue-market classification while its contractual payments are in a currency other than the euro. Conversely, the fact that a bond pays in euros does not by itself tell you whether it is an international issue under a particular statistical or market definition. The name is not a substitute for checking the security’s terms.

Does a Eurobond have to be in euros?

No. “Eurobond” does not by itself specify the denomination currency. The denomination is the currency in which the bond’s cash flows—such as coupon interest and principal repayment—are stated. That currency matters because it determines the units in which the issuer owes payment, not necessarily the currency in which an investor thinks about their wealth or expenses.

For example, an investor whose reference currency differs from the bond’s denomination has two distinct exposures. The bond can change in market value in its denomination currency, and the exchange rate can independently change the translated value of its payments. These effects should not be collapsed into a single idea called “bond risk.” The first is affected by factors such as interest rates and issuer credit; the second comes from currency conversion.

Before comparing issues, establish the denomination from the official terms rather than the bond’s label, issuer location, or trading venue. Also check whether currency exposure is hedged. A hedge is a separate position, may involve costs and counterparties, and may not cover every exposure. The sources cited here establish that exchange rates can affect returns; they do not establish a hedge cost or outcome for any particular bond.

What is the difference between coupon, market price, and yield?

These terms describe different things. The coupon rate is the contractual interest rate applied to the bond’s face value. The market price is what a buyer pays for the bond at a particular time. Yield to maturity (YTM) is a return measure that relates that purchase price to the bond’s promised cash flows over its remaining life, under the measure’s assumptions.

  • Coupon: the interest specified by the bond’s terms, typically expressed as a rate of face value.
  • Price: the amount a buyer pays in the market. A bond can trade above or below its face value.
  • Yield to maturity: a measure that incorporates price and promised cash flows, including principal repayment at maturity, subject to its assumptions.

A fixed coupon does not reset just because market interest rates change. Instead, the bond’s price can move, changing the yield available to a new buyer. That is why the coupon rate and the yield shown in a quote are not interchangeable. A bond with a particular coupon can offer a different YTM depending on its market price and remaining cash flows.

YTM is not a guaranteed realized return. The calculation relies on promised payments and assumptions; default, selling before maturity, reinvestment, transaction costs, taxes, or a call can change what an investor actually earns. Investor.gov explains that an investor who holds a bond to maturity and whose issuer pays as promised receives the contractual interest and face value, while an investor who sells earlier may receive more or less than face value. Its guidance on corporate bonds and bond FAQs covers these terms and risks.

Why do bond prices fall when yields rise?

For fixed-rate bonds, market prices and prevailing interest rates generally move in opposite directions. If market rates rise, newly issued bonds may offer more attractive interest than an existing bond with a lower fixed coupon. Buyers may then require a lower price for the existing bond to make its cash flows competitive. At that lower price, its yield to maturity is higher for a new buyer, all else equal. If market rates fall, an existing bond with a relatively higher coupon may become more attractive, which tends to support a higher price and a lower yield for a new buyer.

The SEC summarizes the relationship this way: “When market interest rates rise, prices of fixed-rate bonds fall.” This is a general relationship, not a promise that every bond will move by the same amount or that rates are the only influence on price. Issuer credit, liquidity, call provisions, and market conditions also matter.

An SEC illustration of the price-and-yield relationship

The SEC’s 2013 investor bulletin illustrates the mechanism with a hypothetical 10-year Treasury bond carrying a 3% coupon, initially priced at par with a 3% yield to maturity. After one year has elapsed, the bulletin shows a one-percentage-point decline in market rates associated with a price of $1,082 and a 2% YTM; its corresponding one-point rate-rise example shows a price of $925 and a 4% YTM. These are illustrative calculations from the bulletin, not live prices, a forecast, or a universal response to a one-point rate move. Actual sensitivity depends on the bond’s cash flows and market conditions. Read the SEC’s fixed-income investor bulletin.

The practical implication is that a bond’s coupon is not a shield against price movements. If you hold a fixed-rate bond, the contractual coupon may remain unchanged while its market value changes. If you sell before maturity, the price at that time affects your proceeds. If you hold to maturity and the issuer pays, the contractual payment schedule matters instead, although holding to maturity does not remove default, reinvestment, or currency risks.

How does currency risk affect a bond’s return?

Every bond specifies payments in a currency. When an investor measures wealth in a different reference currency, the exchange rate at the time of conversion affects the translated value of interest and principal. A currency movement can increase or reduce that value even if the bond’s payments in its own denomination currency are made as promised.

Investor.gov puts the point plainly: “When the exchange rate between the U.S. dollar and the currency of an international investment changes, it can increase or reduce your investment return.” That page is written in terms of U.S. dollar investors; the same conversion issue applies in principle whenever an investor’s reference currency differs from an investment’s denomination. The actual effect depends on the currencies and exchange rates involved. Investor.gov also identifies currency controls among the risks associated with international investing. Keep the two return views separate

First consider the bond in its denomination currency: what cash flows are due, what is its market price, and how could rates or credit conditions affect its value? Then consider the investor’s reference currency: what exchange rate applies when coupon payments are converted, and what rate applies when principal or sale proceeds are converted? Those are separate questions. A strong bond-currency result can translate into a weaker home-currency result if the exchange rate moves against the investor; the reverse is also possible.

This distinction is especially important when looking at a quoted yield. A bond yield is ordinarily expressed in the bond’s own currency and does not, by itself, include a forecast of future exchange rates or the investor’s conversion costs. Do not read a denomination-currency yield as a home-currency return unless the calculation explicitly accounts for currency effects and any hedge.

What a currency hedge can and cannot tell you

A currency hedge may reduce some exchange-rate exposure, but it is a separate position with its own costs, counterparties, and coverage limits. It does not automatically remove all risk from the investment, and the available sources do not establish the cost or effectiveness of a hedge for any particular Eurobond. Whether a hedge is available or appropriate depends on the investor’s circumstances and the instrument’s terms.

Is a higher yield always better?

No. A higher quoted yield can accompany risks that a headline number does not show. It may reflect greater issuer credit risk, lower liquidity, a different currency exposure, a different maturity, or call terms that change the expected cash flows. A comparison is meaningful only when the underlying terms and yield conventions are aligned.

Use this checklist before treating one bond’s yield as better than another’s:

  • Currency: What is the denomination, how does it compare with your reference currency, and is any currency exposure hedged?
  • Issuer and credit: Who owes the payments, and what credit or default risk applies?
  • Maturity and rate exposure: When are principal and interest due, and how might market-rate changes affect the price if you need to sell?
  • Price, coupon, and yield convention: Are you comparing market prices and the same yield measure, rather than comparing coupon rates with yields?
  • Liquidity: How readily can you sell, and could limited liquidity affect the price you receive?
  • Call or early-redemption terms: Can the issuer repay early, and how would that alter the expected cash flows?

A useful decision is not simply “Which bond has the biggest number?” It is “What risks and contractual terms explain the quoted yield, and are those risks acceptable for my intended holding period and currency needs?” The SEC’s bond guidance identifies credit, liquidity, interest-rate, and call-related considerations that can affect a bond investment; the comparison should account for them rather than treating yield as a stand-alone ranking.

A practical way to evaluate an international bond

  1. Read the issue terms. Identify the issuer, currency denomination, coupon terms, maturity, repayment conditions, and any call or early-redemption provisions. Do not infer denomination from “Eurobond.”
  2. Separate contractual payment from market quote. Record the coupon and face value, then check the current price and the yield measure being quoted. A fixed coupon does not state what a buyer will earn at a non-par price.
  3. Ask whether you might need to sell early. If so, price movements and liquidity matter directly to your proceeds. If you expect to hold to maturity, the issuer’s ability to pay and the contractual terms remain central.
  4. Translate the currency exposure into your own frame. Identify the denomination currency and your reference currency. Consider separately the conversion of interim interest and eventual principal or sale proceeds.
  5. Compare like with like. Align currency and hedge status, issuer credit, maturity, market price, yield convention, liquidity, and call terms before deciding that one yield is more attractive.
  6. Check the limits of the quoted return. Consider default, an early sale, reinvestment, costs, taxes, call provisions, and currency conversion. A published yield is a measure based on assumptions, not a guarantee of the final result.

These checks do not predict market direction. They help show which part of the outcome comes from the bond contract, which part comes from a changing market price, and which part comes from currency conversion.

What the yield number does not tell you

There is no single universal “Eurobond yield.” Yield depends on the particular issue and the date and terms used for the quote. A number without its currency, price, maturity, yield convention, issuer risk, and call status is not enough to judge the investment. Nor does a yield alone tell you how much the bond could be worth if sold before maturity or what payments will be worth in another currency.

International investment conditions also depend on jurisdiction. Investor.gov notes currency changes and currency controls as international-investing risks; availability and protections vary by jurisdiction. This explanation is educational, not individualized investment, tax, or legal advice. An investor should consult the relevant issue documents and consider their own circumstances before acting.
