Bitcoin has a stated maximum supply of 21 million BTC and a subsidy that halves every 210,000 blocks. Ethereum has no equivalent fixed maximum in its current official supply guides: proof-of-stake validators issue ETH, while the network burns transaction base fees and can also remove ETH through validator penalties. Bitcoin’s issuance follows a declining schedule; Ethereum’s net supply can rise or fall as issuance and destruction change. A stretch in which ETH supply falls is not the same thing as a permanent cap.
What “fixed issuance” means—and what it does not
Issuance is the creation of new units under a network’s protocol rules. Net supply change is different: it accounts for newly issued units as well as units removed from circulation through mechanisms such as fee burns or penalties. That distinction is essential to comparing Bitcoin and Ethereum.
Bitcoin’s issuance schedule is fixed in the sense that its block subsidy declines at predetermined block-height milestones. The calendar date of a milestone is only approximate because the rule is based on the number of blocks, not a date on the clock. Ethereum’s validator issuance is also governed by protocol rules, but its amount depends on staking participation; its base-fee burn varies with network activity. The resulting net supply is therefore variable.

- Issuance: new BTC or ETH created under protocol rules.
- Burn: ETH permanently removed when transaction base fees are burned.
- Net supply change: issuance minus ETH destroyed or otherwise removed during the period being considered.

It helps to think of the two systems as answering different questions. Bitcoin’s schedule specifies how its per-block subsidy changes over time and the stated limit toward which issuance proceeds. Ethereum’s issuance-and-burn balance answers how much ETH is added or removed over a particular interval. A fixed rule for one component is not the same as a fixed result for total supply.
For Ethereum, the simple accounting idea is: start with new validator issuance for the period, then account for ETH burned and any ETH removed through penalties. If issuance is the larger amount, net supply rises; if removals are larger, it falls. This is a comparison of supply totals over an interval, not a description of what any individual holder’s balance does.
How Bitcoin’s subsidy schedule works
Bitcoin started with a block subsidy of 50 BTC. The protocol cuts that subsidy in half every 210,000 blocks, an interval that works out to roughly four years. The Bitcoin Developer Guide’s block-chain reference describes both the starting subsidy and the block-based interval. As each reduction takes effect, fewer new bitcoins are issued for each subsequent block.
The sequence is geometric: each scheduled change halves the previous subsidy rather than setting a new amount based on current demand. The rule does not mean that the same number of bitcoins is created every year. Nor does “roughly four years” guarantee a particular calendar date for a future reduction; block production determines when the 210,000-block threshold is reached.
Bitcoin.org describes issuance as declining predictably until it halts at a total of 21 million BTC. That is a stated terminal limit, unlike a target that adjusts with demand. The schedule is fixed, but the quantity issued over a given calendar year declines in steps rather than at a constant yearly rate.
What the cap tells you
The 21 million figure describes the maximum total issuance under the documented schedule. It does not mean all bitcoins are already issued, nor does it make the subsidy constant on the way to the limit. The rule combines a declining per-block subsidy with an eventual halt. The bitcoin.org FAQ is the source for the stated 21 million total and predictable decline.
The block count is the precise trigger to keep in view. “Every four years” is a useful shorthand for the 210,000-block interval, but it should not be read as an appointment on a fixed calendar date. The number of blocks reached, rather than the passage of a particular number of months or years, determines when the subsidy changes. That distinction matters whenever a schedule is described using approximate calendar timing.

Thus “fixed” means the rule is specified in advance; it does not mean a level, unchanging annual quantity.
How Ethereum issues and removes ETH
Ethereum’s current system combines issuance and destruction. Since The Merge, validator rewards on the proof-of-stake consensus layer create new ETH. In parallel, Ethereum burns the base fee attached to transactions, and validator penalties can reduce balances. The official ETH supply guide explains the dynamic supply model, while the Merge issuance explainer describes the relationship between issuance and burns.
Validator issuance after The Merge
The Merge took place on September 15, 2022. It ended proof-of-work mining as the way to produce valid Ethereum blocks and ended execution-layer issuance; proof-of-stake validator issuance continued on the consensus layer. Ethereum.org summarizes the change by stating that “Mining is no longer the means of producing valid blocks.” See the official Merge overview.

The amount issued to validators is not a single unchanging daily amount. It depends on protocol rules and the total ETH staked. As staking participation changes, the amount of validator issuance changes too. This is why a quoted issuance rate should be tied to its assumptions and date, rather than treated as a permanent Ethereum setting.
The key contrast with Bitcoin is not that Ethereum has no rules. Validator issuance is governed by protocol rules, just as Bitcoin’s subsidy is governed by its rules. The distinction is the stated basis for changes: Bitcoin’s subsidy steps down at set block-height milestones, while Ethereum’s issuance depends on the amount of ETH staked. The ETH amount issued should therefore be understood in relation to staking participation, rather than as a single permanently fixed daily figure.
Base-fee burn and validator penalties
Ethereum’s base-fee burn began with the London upgrade in August 2021, before The Merge. The Merge therefore changed the issuance side of Ethereum’s supply equation; it did not introduce the burn. When a transaction’s base fee is burned, that ETH is destroyed rather than paid to a validator. Validator penalties can also remove ETH from balances.
Burning ETH does not create a fixed supply ceiling. It is a reduction mechanism whose effect depends on activity and protocol conditions. If issuance exceeds the ETH removed over a period, net supply grows; if removal exceeds issuance, net supply shrinks.
This timeline prevents a common mix-up: London introduced the base-fee burn in August 2021; The Merge followed on September 15, 2022, ending proof-of-work mining as the means of producing valid blocks and ending execution-layer issuance. The burn and the transition in block production are related to supply, but they were not the same event. Saying that The Merge “started the burn” would get the sequence wrong.
Network demand matters to the burn side because the amount burned changes with network activity. The available official guide does not make that burn a predetermined schedule comparable to Bitcoin’s halving milestones. Instead, the ETH removed through base fees can vary over time, so the balance against issuance can vary as well.
Bitcoin and Ethereum compared
| Supply question | Bitcoin | Ethereum |
|---|---|---|
| Where new units come from | Block subsidy paid to miners under proof of work | Rewards to proof-of-stake validators since The Merge |
| What changes issuance | Subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks, approximately every four years | Validator issuance depends on protocol rules and total ETH staked |
| How units can be removed | The cited sources describe declining issuance, not an equivalent routine fee burn | Transaction base fees are burned; validator penalties can also reduce balances |
| Long-run supply framing | bitcoin.org states issuance halts at 21 million BTC | Ethereum’s current official supply guides describe dynamic supply and no equivalent fixed maximum |
| What net supply can do | New issuance declines by scheduled steps toward the stated limit | Supply can grow or shrink depending on issuance and ETH removed |
The table compares the mechanisms, not their economic consequences. In particular, a predictable decline in Bitcoin issuance and a period of declining Ethereum net supply are different properties: one describes a scheduled subsidy rule, the other a balance between variable issuance and variable destruction.
To compare the systems fairly, ask three questions separately: What creates new units? What event or condition changes that issuance? What, if anything, removes units? Bitcoin’s answer begins with its proof-of-work block subsidy and the 210,000-block halving rule. Ethereum’s begins with proof-of-stake validator rewards and staking participation, then adds the base-fee burn and validator penalties. Blending those answers into a single label such as “fixed” or “deflationary” hides the distinction.
The endpoint comparison is similarly specific. Bitcoin.org describes a total issuance limit of 21 million BTC. Ethereum’s current official supply guides describe issuance and destruction that can move net supply in either direction, without an equivalent fixed maximum. That supports saying the systems have different supply frameworks; it does not establish which asset is more valuable or what either network’s future rules will be.
What the Merge changed—and what it did not
Before The Merge, proof-of-work mining created ETH on the execution layer as well as the issuance associated with the consensus system. The transition removed execution-layer mining issuance, while proof-of-stake validator issuance continued. The base-fee burn already existed, so the supply impact of The Merge was mainly a sharp reduction in new issuance rather than the beginning of ETH destruction.

Ethereum.org’s issuance explainer, last updated June 6, 2026, gives a parameterized illustration: approximately 13,000 ETH per day before The Merge and approximately 1,700 ETH per day in staking issuance with about 14 million ETH staked. Under those stated assumptions, it compares annualized issuance of approximately 4.61% before The Merge with approximately 0.52% after it, an approximately 88.7% reduction. These figures are the page’s example, not live October 2026 rates. The page notes that actual validator issuance varies with total ETH staked, and the burn rate varies with network demand.
Those figures describe issuance, not net supply change. To find net change for a period, ETH burned must also be accounted for. A low issuance example alone cannot establish whether supply grew or shrank during a particular interval.
The numbers are useful for illustrating the direction and scale of the issuance change under the page’s assumptions, not for asserting a current rate. The roughly 1,700 ETH/day example is tied to about 14 million ETH staked; changing the staking total changes the issuance estimate. Likewise, an issuance percentage should not be mistaken for a net-supply percentage unless ETH removed over the same period is included in the calculation.

The Merge occurred on September 15, 2022; the Ethereum.org issuance page was last updated June 6, 2026. Because the page’s figures are explicitly parameterized, they should be reported with those assumptions and date rather than presented as a live October 2026 reading. In general, a before-and-after comparison should state whether it is comparing gross issuance or net supply, and what staking assumption underlies the post-Merge figure.
When Ethereum is inflationary or deflationary
In supply discussions, “inflationary” generally means net supply increased over the period being measured; “deflationary” means net supply decreased. For Ethereum, the useful question is not whether ETH is always one or the other, but whether issuance or removal was larger over the chosen interval.
- Net supply rises when newly issued ETH exceeds the amount burned or otherwise removed.
- Net supply falls when the ETH burned and removed exceeds newly issued ETH.
- The balance can change as staking participation affects issuance and network demand affects the amount of base fees burned.
A period of net deflation is a measurement over that period, not evidence that Ethereum has adopted a permanent cap. A different level of staking or network activity can change the balance. Conversely, the fact that the supply can grow does not mean it must grow in every interval.
Any use of “deflationary” should therefore include a time window. A report about a short interval could describe a different net result from one covering a longer interval, because both issuance and burn can vary. Without the window and the gross components, the label is incomplete. The same caution applies to calling ETH inflationary: that describes a net increase for the period measured, not a guarantee about every subsequent period.
Nor does a net decline over a selected period establish that Ethereum has a supply target or terminal cap. The result can reverse if issuance becomes larger than removals over another interval. The essential question is always the balance of the two sides during the chosen span, not whether a particular label has become a permanent property of ETH.
How to read supply figures without mixing them up
Before comparing a supply statistic, check what it measures. “ETH issued” is not the same as “ETH supply change,” and neither necessarily means the same thing as a current supply total. The official Ethereum supply guide names real-time supply and issuance trackers, including Ultrasound.money and Etherscan.
- Identify the period. A net change over a short window can differ from a longer-term trend.
- Separate gross issuance from net change. For ETH, consider both validator issuance and burned fees, plus penalties where relevant.
- Check the assumptions behind rate examples. Ethereum issuance estimates depend on the amount staked; a dated example is not a live rate.
- For Bitcoin, distinguish block height from calendar time. The exact rule is every 210,000 blocks; a four-year interval is an approximation.
- Do not infer a cap from a temporary trend. A period of falling ETH supply is not equivalent to Bitcoin’s stated terminal issuance limit.
When viewing an ETH tracker, first note whether its figure is a supply total, gross issuance, burn, or net change. If a figure reports only newly issued ETH, it has not yet answered whether supply rose or fell. If it reports a net change, check the dates covered. Comparing unlike windows or comparing a gross flow for one asset with a net figure for another can make the two systems seem more similar or more different than their mechanics warrant.

For a Bitcoin schedule question, look for the block interval rather than treating an estimated calendar date as the rule itself. For an Ethereum rate question, look for the amount staked and the date attached to the estimate, then consider burn activity for the same period. These checks do not require a prediction: they simply keep issuance, net supply, and total supply from being conflated.

“Bitcoin issues the same amount each year.”
It does not. The subsidy declines at block milestones. The schedule is predetermined, but the amount issued per block changes in steps, and calendar intervals are approximate.
“Ethereum is permanently deflationary.”
Not necessarily. ETH can be net deflationary during a period when burns and other removals exceed issuance, but validator issuance and fee burning vary. A temporary net-supply decline does not establish a permanent supply rule.
“The Merge made Ethereum’s supply fixed.”
No. The Merge changed how valid blocks are produced and ended execution-layer mining issuance. Validators still receive issuance, and the network continues to burn base fees. Ethereum’s current official supply guides describe a dynamic supply rather than a fixed maximum equivalent to Bitcoin’s.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors“A lower issuance rate means supply must fall.”
Not on its own. Lower gross issuance reduces one side of the calculation. Net supply falls only if ETH removed over the same period exceeds the amount issued.
“The four-year shorthand is Bitcoin’s exact timer.”
The exact Bitcoin trigger described in the Developer Guide is every 210,000 blocks. Roughly four years is an approximation of how long that interval takes, not a calendar deadline. A future date should not be inferred from the shorthand alone.
“Ethereum’s burn and The Merge began together.”
No. The base-fee burn began with the London upgrade in August 2021. The Merge followed in September 2022 and changed block production and issuance by ending execution-layer mining issuance. The two events affected different parts of the supply picture.
“A quoted ETH issuance rate is the same as net supply growth.”
It is not. Gross issuance counts newly created ETH. Net supply change also accounts for ETH burned and other removals. The official example of approximately 1,700 ETH per day assumes about 14 million ETH staked and describes staking issuance, not a live net-growth rate.

Which system has a fixed supply schedule?
Bitcoin has the clearer fixed issuance schedule: its subsidy follows block-height halvings and issuance is stated to stop at 21 million BTC. Ethereum does not have the same structure. Its proof-of-stake issuance responds to staking participation, and base-fee burning responds to activity, leaving net supply able to move in either direction.

The most accurate comparison is therefore not “Bitcoin is fixed and Ethereum is deflationary.” It is: Bitcoin’s new issuance declines on a predetermined schedule toward a stated cap; Ethereum combines variable validator issuance with variable ETH destruction and has no equivalent fixed maximum in the cited current official guides.
For a quick comparison, keep the trigger and endpoint distinct. Bitcoin’s trigger is the 210,000-block subsidy milestone, repeated toward the stated 21 million BTC limit. Ethereum’s supply balance reflects validator issuance tied to staking participation and base-fee burns tied to network activity, with penalties also able to remove ETH. That is why a temporary ETH supply decline cannot be read as an Ethereum version of Bitcoin’s fixed cap.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Ethereum have a fixed supply like Bitcoin?
Ethereum’s current official supply guides describe a dynamic supply and no equivalent fixed maximum. Validators issue ETH under proof-of-stake rules, while base fees are burned and validator penalties can reduce balances. Bitcoin.org, by contrast, describes issuance declining toward a total of 21 million BTC.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCan ETH become deflationary?
Yes, over a measured period, if ETH burned and otherwise removed exceeds newly issued ETH. That does not mean Ethereum is permanently deflationary or has adopted a fixed cap; the balance can change with staking participation and network demand.
How often does Bitcoin’s subsidy halve?
The Bitcoin Developer Guide says the subsidy is halved every 210,000 blocks, approximately once every four years. The block count is the protocol interval; the calendar estimate is approximate.
Did The Merge introduce Ethereum’s fee burn?
No. The base-fee burn began with the London upgrade in August 2021. The Merge took place on September 15, 2022, ended proof-of-work mining as the means of producing valid blocks, and ended execution-layer issuance while proof-of-stake validator issuance continued.
What does Ethereum’s approximately 1,700 ETH per day figure mean?
Ethereum.org’s issuance explainer, last updated June 6, 2026, gives approximately 1,700 ETH per day as staking issuance with about 14 million ETH staked. It is a parameterized example, not a live October 2026 rate and not a net-supply figure; burns and other removals must be considered to determine net change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Does Bitcoin issue the same amount of BTC every year?
No. Its per-block subsidy halves at 210,000-block milestones, so issuance declines in steps. The roughly four-year interval is an approximation, not a promise that every calendar year has the same issuance.
Where can I check Ethereum supply and issuance figures?
Ethereum.org’s supply guide names Ultrasound.money and Etherscan as real-time supply and issuance tracking tools. Check whether a displayed value is gross issuance, burn, total supply, or net change, and note its time window.
The Bottom Line
Bitcoin’s subsidy halves every 210,000 blocks toward a stated 21 million BTC limit. Ethereum has no equivalent fixed maximum in its current official supply guides: validator issuance varies with staking, while fee burns and penalties can reduce ETH supply. A period of net ETH deflation is a variable balance, not a permanent cap.
