USDe does not pay interest simply because you hold it. Ethena describes USDe as a synthetic dollar backed by crypto spot assets and offsetting short futures positions. Protocol revenue may come from staking yield on backing assets, funding payments or dated-futures basis, and rewards on liquid stablecoins. Eligible users can stake USDe for sUSDe, whose value may increase as those rewards accrue. The same strategy carries funding, collateral, liquidation, custody, exchange, smart-contract, liquidity, operational, and regulatory risks. A major market disruption on October 10, 2025 also showed that USDe’s price can temporarily diverge sharply from one dollar on a centralized exchange.

What USDe is—and what it is not

Ethena calls USDe a synthetic dollar, not a fiat-backed stablecoin such as USDC or USDT. The design combines crypto assets held as backing with short derivatives positions intended to offset the assets’ price movements. Bitcoin, Ether, and other governance-approved spot assets can be hedged with perpetual or deliverable futures, alongside liquid stablecoins held by the protocol.

A delta hedge aims to make the combined position less sensitive to the dollar value of the underlying crypto. It does not turn the arrangement into cash in a bank account, nor does it remove the possibility of losses. Funding rates, futures basis, collateral values, exchange solvency, execution quality, custody arrangements, and market liquidity all affect the result.

Where the protocol’s revenue can come from

Ethena’s FAQ identifies three potential sources of protocol-level revenue. None is a fixed coupon, and the available amount can change from one market regime to another.

Revenue source How it works What can go wrong
Staked-ETH yield Some backing assets may be staked, producing blockchain staking rewards. Staking returns vary; the asset can face smart-contract, validator, liquidity, or depeg risk.
Perpetual funding or dated-futures basis Short derivatives positions may receive funding from longs, or benefit from a favorable difference between spot and an expiring futures price. Funding can turn negative, requiring payment. Basis can narrow, disappear, or reverse before expiry.
Rewards on liquid stablecoins Stablecoins held by the protocol may earn returns through permitted arrangements. Stablecoin depegs, issuer or counterparty problems, and changing market rates can reduce revenue.

Perpetual funding

Perpetual futures do not expire. Exchanges use periodic funding payments to keep their contract price near the spot market. When traders are heavily positioned long, shorts may receive funding; when positioning reverses, shorts may have to pay. Ethena’s hedge therefore benefits only when the rate and position remain favorable. A prolonged period of negative funding can consume revenue and, according to the protocol’s risk disclosure, could draw down the reserve fund and damage confidence in USDe.

Dated-futures basis

A dated futures contract has an expiry. Its basis is the difference between the spot price and the futures price. A short position can earn a positive basis when futures trade above spot and the gap converges as expiry approaches. That spread is market-dependent rather than guaranteed: prices can move, convergence can be delayed, and trading or rollover costs can reduce the outcome.

Why holding USDe is different from staking sUSDe

Ethena’s terms state that USDe itself does not generate interest or a return for holders. The token is designed to track a dollar value, not to increase in quantity or pay a stated coupon. Any return associated with the protocol’s revenue is linked to its staking product, sUSDe, rather than automatically distributed to every USDe wallet.

In the staking contract, eligible users deposit USDe and receive sUSDe. Rewards accrue inside that contract and are reflected in the value of sUSDe, so the exchange value of sUSDe can rise as rewards are added. This is an exposure and liquidity choice: a person holding sUSDe participates in the staking mechanism, while a person holding unstaked USDe does not receive that protocol reward merely by waiting.

Ethena’s staking guide describes a seven-day cooldown after an unstaking request. During the cooldown, the user cannot immediately reclaim the underlying USDe through that workflow. Access is also jurisdiction-dependent. The guide’s linked notice excludes people habitually resident or registered in the European Union or European Economic Area, among other eligibility conditions. Rules and supported jurisdictions can change, so a user must check the current interface and terms before depositing.

There is no verified “current APY” in the mechanism itself

The three revenue channels explain how rewards may be produced; they do not establish what a holder will earn today. A quoted historical or advertised APY is not a promise of future performance. Current yield depends on staking returns, funding and basis conditions, stablecoin rewards, fees, reserve policies, and the amount of USDe or sUSDe participating. Without a contemporaneous, verifiable figure, it is more accurate to discuss the sources and risks than to publish a single expected rate.

How the hedge is supposed to support the dollar value

  1. Acquire backing assets. The protocol holds a mix that can include crypto spot assets and liquid stablecoins.
  2. Open offsetting shorts. Short perpetual or deliverable futures are intended to offset the price sensitivity of the crypto backing.
  3. Manage collateral and venues. Derivatives require collateral, margin monitoring, and access to trading venues. Positions must be adjusted as markets and risk limits change.
  4. Collect or pay market cash flows. Staking rewards, funding, basis, and stablecoin rewards add revenue when conditions are favorable; negative funding, losses, and costs subtract from it.
  5. Process issuance and redemption under the rules. The hedge is part of a managed system, not a guarantee that every secondary-market trade will clear at exactly one dollar.

The intended result is reduced directional exposure, not elimination of every risk. A hedge can perform as designed while an exchange’s order book, oracle, collateral rules, or withdrawal process creates a temporary price dislocation for traders on that venue.

Risk 1: funding and basis can turn against the strategy

The most direct economic risk is that the short derivatives positions stop producing income. If perpetual funding becomes negative, the protocol pays longs instead of receiving payments. If a favorable dated-futures spread compresses or reverses, the expected basis revenue falls. A long adverse period can reduce or exhaust accumulated reserves. This is why funding and basis should be treated as variable market exposure, not fixed income.

Risk 2: backing collateral can depeg or be liquidated

Liquid-staked tokens and other crypto collateral can trade below the value of the asset they represent. A depeg, a smart-contract exploit, or a liquidity shortage can reduce the backing value precisely when the protocol needs to sell or rebalance. Derivatives exchanges can also liquidate positions if collateral or margin falls below their requirements. Forced liquidation realizes losses and may occur faster and at worse prices than a planned trade.

Risk 3: custody and operational counterparties matter

Ethena describes using off-exchange settlement providers that hold assets and facilitate delegation to trading venues. Keeping collateral away from an exchange can reduce some venue risks, but it is not a guarantee. A provider could suffer an outage, legal dispute, insolvency, processing delay, cyber incident, or failure to perform an operational duty. Access to collateral and the ability to move or settle it remain dependent on those counterparties and procedures.

Risk 4: exchange failures and venue-specific pricing

Centralized exchanges apply their own collateral, oracle, liquidation, and order-book rules. A price shown on one venue may not represent the price available elsewhere, especially during a fast market.

On October 10, 2025, the European Securities and Markets Authority reported USDe trading at USD 0.65 on Binance during a broad crypto-market disruption. A later SEC-filed disclosure said the deepest dislocation was concentrated on a particular venue and was substantially associated with venue-specific pricing, oracle, and collateral risk controls. That filing said post-event analysis did not indicate an interruption of Ethena minting or redemption and found no evidence of reserve impairment. Those statements describe that event; they do not guarantee that a future disruption will be contained or that every venue will maintain a one-dollar price.

Risk 5: direct redemption is restricted

Ethena’s terms do not promise that USDe will always trade for one dollar on third-party platforms. They also state that reserves could fall below one dollar of notional value per USDe. Direct redemption with Ethena BVI is limited to a “Mint User” who has completed the required checks. An ordinary holder must qualify and onboard to become such a user; simply owning USDe in a wallet does not automatically create a direct redemption right.

That distinction matters during stress. A holder who cannot use the primary redemption route may have to sell on a secondary market, where the price, spread, available liquidity, and withdrawal rules are controlled by the venue. A market price below one dollar can therefore persist even if the protocol continues operating.

Risk 6: smart contracts, blockchains, and integrations can fail

Ethena publishes audits and risk analyses as part of its security program. An audit is a review of specified code and assumptions at a point in time, not an insurance policy. Bugs can remain undiscovered, and a dependency, oracle, bridge, wallet integration, or blockchain can fail after the review.

The terms warn that technical problems, cyberattacks, blockchain congestion or disruption, and chain forks can delay or prevent transactions and services. During such an interruption, a user might be unable to mint, redeem, stake, unstake, transfer, or move collateral when the market is changing quickly.

Risk 7: irreversible transfers and lost keys

Blockchain transfers generally cannot be reversed. Sending USDe to the wrong address, using an incompatible network, or losing the private key can make the tokens inaccessible. Ethena’s terms also state that USDe is not protected by deposit-insurance schemes such as FDIC or SIPC. Self-custody shifts transaction and key-management responsibility to the holder; it does not protect against depegs, contract bugs, exchange failures, or restricted redemption.

Risk 8: legal and regulatory changes

Ethena’s terms identify legislative and regulatory developments as risks and reserve rights to suspend or delay certain services in specified circumstances. Eligibility, minting, redemption, staking, and transfer rules can differ by jurisdiction and can change without creating a guaranteed access route for every holder. Before using the product, check the current terms, prohibited-country list, identity checks, and staking eligibility that apply to your residence and legal status.

USDe and sUSDe: the practical differences

Question USDe sUSDe
Receives protocol staking rewards? No automatic holder return under Ethena’s terms. Yes, for permitted users through the staking contract as its value reflects accrued rewards.
Primary exposure Exposure to the synthetic-dollar design and its backing, hedge, and market risks. The same underlying risks plus staking-contract, cooldown, and sUSDe liquidity considerations.
Unstaking delay Not applicable when simply holding USDe. The staking guide describes a seven-day cooldown after an unstaking request.
Direct redemption Restricted to approved Mint Users; secondary-market price is not guaranteed. Must generally be unstaked first, subject to the staking workflow and eligibility.
Jurisdiction Use and transfers remain subject to the current terms. The staking workflow is limited to permitted jurisdictions; the linked notice excludes habitual residents or registrants of the EU/EEA.

A holder’s due-diligence checklist

  • Confirm whether you are eligible to mint, redeem, or stake in your jurisdiction.
  • Decide whether you need liquid USDe or can tolerate sUSDe’s staking and unstaking process.
  • Check the current funding, basis, staking, and stablecoin-reward environment instead of relying on an old APY.
  • Identify which exchange, settlement provider, wallet, and blockchain your transaction will use.
  • Understand the exact redemption path available to you; do not assume wallet ownership makes you a Mint User.
  • Use a test transfer and verify the network and destination address before sending a larger amount.
  • Size the position for a possible price dislocation, withdrawal delay, contract failure, or loss of access.
  • Keep private keys secure and maintain a recovery plan that does not depend on one device or exchange.

What the October 2025 event does—and does not—prove

The reported USD 0.65 Binance price is evidence that a centralized-exchange quote can diverge materially from one dollar during market stress. The later filing’s explanation points to venue-specific pricing, oracle, and collateral controls and says it found no reserve impairment or interruption of minting and redemption in that episode. Neither observation proves that USDe is always safe nor that every future discount would reflect a venue error. It demonstrates why holders must distinguish protocol reserves, primary redemption access, and the price available on a particular exchange.

Bottom line for prospective holders

USDe’s potential yield is produced at the protocol level by staking rewards, derivatives funding or basis, and rewards on liquid stablecoins—not by a guaranteed interest payment on the USDe token. sUSDe is the vehicle through which eligible users can receive that value, with a stated seven-day unstaking cooldown and jurisdiction limits. The strategy relies on hedges, collateral, exchanges, custody providers, smart contracts, blockchains, and legal access. Those dependencies can create losses or temporary price gaps even when the intended hedge is operating. Treat any yield as variable, verify the redemption and eligibility rules that apply to you, and assume that a one-dollar secondary-market price is not guaranteed.
