Eternals can be read through three real-world ideas—technology governance, theories of consciousness, and the Fermi paradox—but those are interpretive comparisons, not confirmed inspirations or scientific claims made by the film. A proposed connection to lead poisoning is not established by the available evidence.
First, what does “lead” mean here?
There are two different kinds of leadership to distinguish. Kevin Feige identified Sersi, played by Gemma Chan, as the film’s lead character within its ensemble. Ajak, played by Salma Hayek, is the team’s leader inside the story. Disney’s 2021 cast-and-crew account describes Ajak as a mother figure and records Hayek discussing her authority and control over information.

“Lead” can also mean the toxic metal. The available film-related material does not establish that the Ebony Blade’s curse represents lead poisoning, that the blade contains lead, or that lead explains a character’s behavior. Without reliable evidence connecting the film to lead exposure, that reading should remain unresolved rather than being presented as a fact.

Phastos is an inventor whose technology has consequences for human societies. Disney’s 2021 account describes him as a technological innovator, and actor Brian Tyree Henry discusses his character’s struggle with how people use technology. Henry also said, “What I really love the most about Phastos is that through all of that… he still chose love.”

That story invites a comparison with the control dilemma associated with David Collingridge. As described in the 2016 paper “An Ethical Framework for Evaluating Experimental Technology,” a technology may be easier to shape when it is new, while its effects are still uncertain. Later, once its social effects are clearer, the technology may be more difficult to change because it has become established.
This is a useful lens for thinking about technology governance: who gets to decide how a powerful technology is used, who bears the consequences, and whether those consequences can still be corrected. But the comparison has limits:
- The cited governance framework concerns experimental technology generally; it does not establish that Eternals depicts modern AI-safety research.
- The film’s account of Phastos supports an analogy about consequential technology and control, not proof that the filmmakers intended an AI-safety allegory.
- The story is not evidence that any real technology will produce the same effects as Phastos’s inventions.
What does the Uni-Mind have to do with consciousness?
The Uni-Mind is a fictional collective in which separate Eternals act together. That image can prompt a comparison with Integrated Information Theory (IIT), but it should not be mistaken for a scientific model of a superhero group mind.
In his 2004 paper “An information integration theory of consciousness,” neuroscientist Giulio Tononi proposed that the quantity of consciousness available to a system can be measured by Φ, a measure intended to capture causally effective information integrated across that system. In the theory’s terms, the question is not merely how much information a system contains, but how much is integrated in a way that depends on the system as a whole.
The comparison with the Uni-Mind is metaphorical: both invite questions about what makes a collection of parts function as a whole. The film does not test IIT, and the fictional linking of the Eternals does not validate the theory. Researchers continue to debate how well Φ captures consciousness and how it should be interpreted; IIT is a theoretical account, not settled scientific consensus. A 2018 paper, “Integrated information as a metric for group interaction,” discusses questions around interpreting integrated information in group settings, but that does not turn the Uni-Mind into evidence for IIT.
Does the Celestial emergence premise solve the Fermi paradox?
No. It offers a fictional scenario that can be compared with Great Filter reasoning, but it is neither observational evidence nor a scientific solution to the Fermi paradox.
Rank #3
The Fermi paradox is commonly framed as the apparent tension between the possibility of expansive civilizations and the lack of observed traces of them. The Great Silence refers to the lack of successful SETI detections to date. The Great Filter is a proposed way to think about whether some stage in the development of galaxy-spanning life is rare or difficult. It is a framework for considering possibilities, not an established explanation for why extraterrestrial civilizations have not been detected.

Eternals reveals that Earth’s living population is part of a cosmic reproductive process. As a piece of fiction, that premise can be read as one imagined answer to a Great Filter-style question: what might prevent intelligent life from spreading or leaving detectable traces? But it does not show that such a mechanism exists, explain the real absence of detections, or resolve the Fermi paradox. The 2025 paper “A reassessment of the ‘hard-steps’ model for the evolution of intelligent life” discusses the Fermi paradox, Great Silence, and Great Filter as distinct concepts; none is established by the film’s plot.

| Lens | What the film offers | What the real-world idea claims | Strength of the connection |
|---|---|---|---|
| AI safety and technology governance | Phastos’s inventions affect human societies, raising questions about control and consequences. | The Collingridge control dilemma describes how technologies can be easier to shape before their effects are clear, but harder to change after they are established. | A thematic analogy; not evidence of intended AI-safety inspiration. |
| Consciousness theory | The Uni-Mind depicts separate beings acting collectively. | IIT proposes Φ as a measure related to integrated information and consciousness. | A metaphorical comparison; the fictional collective does not support or test IIT. |
| Fermi paradox and Great Filter | The Celestial emergence premise gives Earth a role in a cosmic process. | The Great Filter is a proposed framework for thinking about difficult stages in the development of galaxy-spanning life amid the lack of detected traces. | A science-fiction scenario, not an empirical explanation or solution. |
| Lead | The film-related material does not establish a connection between the Ebony Blade’s curse and lead exposure. | No public-health claim linking lead exposure to a character’s behavior is supported here. | Unsubstantiated; do not treat it as a confirmed interpretation. |
Disney’s 2021 description says the Eternals have protected Earth across 7,000 years. That figure is story context, not a statistic about AI safety, consciousness, extraterrestrial life, or lead exposure. Taken together, the more defensible reading of the film’s real-world parallels is about responsibility under unequal knowledge and power—not proof that the film encodes particular academic theories.
