ESPN’s animated alt-casts combine live player-tracking inputs, animation technology, franchise-specific design and a conventional live broadcast operation. The exact stack depends on the sport and event: ESPN and Disney cite NFL Next Gen Stats and Beyond Sports for Toy Story Funday Football, while the 2026 Inside Out Classic used NHL EDGE positional data and Hawk-Eye optical tracking. Public accounts explain examples of the process, not a complete technical blueprint shared by every broadcast.
How does ESPN turn a live game into an animated broadcast?
The basic idea is to use live game information to place player movement and game action inside a designed animated environment. Instead of showing only the standard camera feed, the alt-cast renders the action in a visual world shaped around a franchise, such as Pixar’s Toy Story or Disney’s Big City Greens.
That requires more than applying a cartoon filter to video. Tracking data supplies movement inputs; visualization technology turns those inputs into animated action; and ESPN’s creative and production teams coordinate the presentation with the franchise’s visual rules. The public production accounts describe those ingredients for individual events, but do not disclose a full system diagram, exact latency, frame rate or tracking accuracy.
1. Tracking supplies movement inputs
For the 2023 Toy Story Funday Football NFL presentation, ESPN and Disney said the animated game used NFL Next Gen Stats player-tracking data and Beyond Sports technology. That description applies to that event; it should not be treated as a universal specification for every animated alt-cast. Disney’s behind-the-scenes account and ESPN’s production feature explain the collaboration and the Toy Story setting.

The NHL examples use different event-specific descriptions. ESPN called the 2023 Big City Greens Classic a live animated NHL telecast using real-time volumetric animation. Its 2024 feature on the second presentation describes more use of optical tracking data and storytelling integrated with Disney IP. For the 2026 Inside Out Classic, Disney and the NHL identified NHL EDGE positional data, Hawk-Eye optical tracking and Beyond Sports visualization technology.
2. Data is rendered in a designed world
Once movement inputs are available, the action has to be represented in a virtual setting and in a style that feels consistent with the chosen franchise. For Toy Story Funday Football, the NFL game was presented in Andy’s room, with ESPN Creative Studio and franchise collaborators shaping the characters and environment. ESPN Creative Studio’s David “Sparky” Sparrgrove described the intended tone as a family-oriented “fun-cast” in ESPN’s production feature.

The creative treatment is part of the production, not just a decorative overlay. A character’s proportions, props and surroundings affect how the action reads. ESPN’s Michael “Spike” Szykowny recalled that the team had to consider how a hockey stick might overlap other characters in the Big City Greens environment. Those practical visual choices show why a real-time animated presentation still depends on planning and creative direction.

The animated view is one part of a live show. The broadcast still needs to communicate the game, present commentators and make decisions about what viewers see. ESPN and Disney’s accounts describe collaboration among ESPN production and creative staff, animation partners and franchise teams; they do not publish a complete staffing chart or a universal workflow.

The approach has developed across events rather than following one fixed recipe. In 2025, ESPN announced an expanded agreement with Beyond Sports and Hawk-Eye that planned animated NFL, NHL, NBA and WNBA telecasts during the 2025–26 season. That announcement describes plans for that season; it does not establish a schedule beyond it. ESPN’s announcement also refers to earlier NFL presentations and the NBA’s Dunk the Halls.
How do commentators appear in the animated world?
Some events animate the commentators as well as the players. ESPN’s account of the 2023 Big City Greens Classic describes motion capture for animated commentator versions. Disney’s 2026 Inside Out Classic announcement says commentators wore virtual-reality headsets for motion capture in the animated environment. In practical terms, talent movement is captured and represented in the virtual presentation.

The available accounts do not explain a complete body- and face-capture pipeline or specify the equipment in enough detail to generalize across events. The capture approach should therefore be understood as event-specific rather than assumed to be identical in every alt-cast.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsESPN’s feature on turning commentators into animated characters discusses production choices such as avoiding character overlap or occlusion. In a virtual scene, a prop or character blocking another can make the action hard to read, so staging and placement matter alongside the captured performance.

What happens if tracking or animation has a problem?
A live animated broadcast has to account for technical interruptions rather than assume every data input will work continuously. In a Disney+ interview about Monsters Funday Football, ESPN’s team said a technical or tracking problem could prompt a cut to another camera view or the use of a pre-animated segment. Those are examples from that event’s interview, not a guaranteed contingency plan for all ESPN productions. The interview gives a useful picture of animation operating within a live production, where the crew can choose an alternate view or prepared element.
How the named broadcasts differ
| Event | Sport and tracking or visualization described | Creative treatment and capture | Distribution confirmed in the cited account |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big City Greens Classic (2023) | NHL; ESPN described real-time volumetric animation. A single named tracking source is not stated in the cited production account. | Animated NHL players and teams in the show’s style; ESPN described motion-captured animated commentators. | not stated in the cited production account. |
| Toy Story Funday Football (2023) | NFL; NFL Next Gen Stats player-tracking data and Beyond Sports technology. | Game action in Pixar’s Toy Story world, set in Andy’s room; ESPN and Disney describe motion-capture preparation for commentators. | ESPN+ and Disney+ were listed for this presentation at the time in ESPN’s production feature. |
| Big City Greens Classic 2 (2024) | NHL; ESPN’s feature describes increased use of optical tracking data. A specific tracking provider is not stated there. | Disney IP and storytelling integrated with animated hockey action; the feature discusses the evolving production collaboration. | not stated in the cited production feature. |
| Planned 2025–26 animated telecasts | ESPN announced a slate spanning NFL, NHL, NBA and WNBA, with an expanded Beyond Sports and Hawk-Eye agreement. Event-by-event inputs are not specified in the announcement. | The announcement references prior NFL presentations and the NBA’s Dunk the Halls; it does not establish one creative treatment for the whole slate. | Event-specific platforms are not stated in the agreement announcement. |
| Inside Out Classic (2026) | NHL; NHL EDGE positional data, Hawk-Eye optical tracking and Beyond Sports visualization technology. | Game action adapted to Pixar’s Inside Out world; Disney says commentators wore VR headsets for motion capture. | The event’s outlets are identified in the Disney+ announcement. |
These descriptions come from the event-specific accounts: ESPN’s 2023 commentator feature, its 2024 production feature, the 2025–26 agreement announcement, and the NHL’s 2026 event announcement. “Not stated” means the cited account does not specify that detail, not that the event necessarily lacked it.
Where can you watch an animated ESPN alt-cast?
Availability depends on the specific event and its announcement. ESPN’s 2023 Toy Story Funday Football production feature listed ESPN+ and Disney+ for that presentation at the time. The 2026 Inside Out Classic announcement identifies that event’s outlets. Neither example supports assuming that every animated alt-cast streams on the same service; check the official listing for the game you want to watch.
What the public production accounts establish—and what they do not
Official ESPN, Disney and league materials are useful for identifying named collaborators, announced tracking inputs, creative aims and event distribution. They are not an independent technical audit. They do not establish a universal system architecture or justify claims about exact delay, frame rate, tracking precision, or how many people work on each broadcast.
The clearest conclusion is that animated alt-casts are live, event-specific productions built from data, visualization and creative decisions. Their shared pattern is recognizable, but the sources do not support treating every sport, franchise or broadcast as if it used exactly the same tools or workflow.
