ESA’s FASTNAV project is developing navigation and control software intended to help future lunar rovers travel at around 1 metre per second—about 3.6 km/h. That is a development target, not a speed demonstrated on the Moon: ESA’s reported test was an 11-day field campaign in volcanic terrain in Fuerteventura, Spain, and the software is not flight-ready.
What FASTNAV is—and what the field test showed
FASTNAV is a guidance, navigation and control (GNC) software effort for future lunar rovers, not a new rover available to buy. ESA reported on 8 October 2026 that an 11-day campaign in Fuerteventura had concluded. The team tested autonomous movement over Earth terrain including volcanic boulders and dunes, using short validation runs and longer missions in changing light, including overnight trials. ESA’s account of the campaign describes terrestrial analogue testing, not a lunar drive.
The target is roughly 1 m/s, equivalent to about 3.6 km/h. ESA’s FASTNAV programme record describes an objective of average traverse speeds up to 1.0 m/s using continuous driving. ESA’s announcement compares the target with roughly 0.2 km/h for previous planetary rovers; that is the agency’s broad comparison, not a universal speed limit for every rover or a controlled head-to-head test. The programme record lists activity dates of 2023–2024.
Why faster traverses could matter
Rover mission time is divided between travelling and doing science at points of interest. If a rover can cover ground more quickly and autonomously, a mission may be able to spend more of its limited time investigating sites and operating instruments rather than driving between them. The benefit depends on the rover being able to travel safely and reliably; speed alone does not guarantee more useful science.

ESA also points to possible future polar missions, where a rover might move between locations while staying in thermally viable regions and negotiating difficult, shadowed terrain. This is a prospective mission rationale, not a demonstrated outcome of the Fuerteventura campaign. ESA technical officer Lennart Puck described the aim as remaining in viable regions “for longer.”
How FASTNAV fits into a larger navigation system
FASTNAV is one module in GMV UK’s broader NOMAD connected navigation system, with support from GMV Spain. ESA says the development integrates AI-assisted terrain and hazard awareness through HAWKEYE. NOMAD also includes ANIME/LUPIN, a positioning, navigation and timing module developed through ESA’s Navigation Innovation and Support Programme. The FASTNAV work is associated with ESA’s General Support Technology Programme (GSTP) De-Risk Framework and builds on earlier technology work called RAPID, with further incremental maturation through GSTP. ESA’s RAPID programme record provides context for that earlier work.

- ✅【Meaningful Design】Inspired by the action of human exploration on Mars and the Moon, this very different cosmic exploration vehicle style remote control car was created, unfolding the sail panel can automatically turn on the light effect, if closed to save power consumption, and comes with a model astronaut.
- ✅【The Best Gift of Enlightenment】This RC toy car is suitable for children from 4 years old and up, cultivating kids' interest in the future of science and space, having fun, and being educational. It is the best space gift for birthdays, children's days, Christmas, Easter, summer camp activities, and back to school.
- ✅【Rich Control Gameplay】The RC cars have special 6 wheels (4 drive wheels + 2 auxiliary wheels) and can be controlled by a combination of remote controls to achieve a variety of movements [1]. Forward and backward movement. [2]. Lateral movement. [3]. Turning around in place. [4]. Sideways adjustment of body direction. [5]. DEMO auto-drive mode.
- ✅【Adaptable to Multiple Terrains】Powerful damping springs and high-torque wheels allow the remote control cars to drive and climb over rough terrain, both indoors and outdoors and are not prone to rollovers.
- ✅【Strong Signal, No Interference】Using a high-quality 2.4 GHz remote control, the actual test effective control distance of 30 meters (no exaggerated propaganda) is very responsive. The signal stability and control distance are much stronger than the traditional infrared remote control.
These components address different parts of the navigation problem: determining position and movement, interpreting terrain and hazards, and planning or controlling motion. Integrating them is important because a rover cannot safely move faster simply by issuing drive commands more quickly; it must also understand where it is and respond to what lies ahead.
Why high-speed lunar driving is difficult
Fast travel over rough terrain couples mobility, navigation and human-robot interaction. ESA’s earlier RAPID work treated these as connected development challenges rather than isolated features. Its 2023 executive summary identifies hazards such as a rover becoming airborne and losing steering or braking control, as well as reduced stability under lunar gravity that can make tipping or wheel lift more likely. The report explains why higher speed raises control and stability demands; it does not establish that FASTNAV has solved every such problem.

Has FASTNAV driven on the Moon?
No. ESA’s reported campaign took place on Earth, in Fuerteventura, Spain. An analogue field test can exercise software in challenging terrain, but it does not demonstrate performance under lunar gravity, vacuum, radiation or the Moon’s full thermal environment. ESA explicitly says the software is not flight-ready; continued maturation, robustness improvements, integration and safety assessments remain necessary.
For scale, ESA separately lists a nominal speed of 440–480 m/h for its Lunar Rover Mockup, a test platform rather than FASTNAV or a flight rover. That figure describes a different system and should not be used as evidence of FASTNAV’s achieved speed. ESA’s LRM page describes the mockup’s role as a payload test platform.
