Cross-play lets people using different platforms play the same game together, but it takes more than connecting matchmaking servers. Epic’s route to Fortnite cross-play ran from tests in the smaller game Paragon to shared accounts, friends, parties, invites, and policy changes that let console and PC players meet in the same lobby.
What cross-play means—and what it does not
Cross-play is the ability for players on different platforms to play together in a supported game. A person on a console and a friend on PC can join the same session if that game supports their platform combination and mode.
Two related features are often bundled with cross-play, but they are distinct:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Cross-progression carries a player’s progress between supported platforms. It is possible to share a lobby without carrying progress between devices.
- Cross-purchase lets a player access a purchase across supported platforms. It does not follow automatically from cross-play.
Support is not universal: each game determines which platforms, modes, and account features work together, and those details can change.

How Epic moved from Paragon to Fortnite
Paragon provided a smaller place to test
Epic says it used Paragon, which supported PC and PS4, to test cross-platform matchmaking, authentication, and progression in a live game before facing Fortnite’s larger scale. The company also describes monitoring the system to find problems such as slow matchmaking and security flaws. Epic’s account of its cross-play work explains why these systems had to be developed together.
Xbox joined Fortnite’s cross-play announcement in March 2018
On March 10, 2018, Epic announced cross-play, cross-progression, and cross-purchase for Fortnite between Xbox One, PC, Mac, and iOS, with Android planned for the following months. Epic said cross-play was opt-in. That announcement described the planned support; it does not mean every listed combination was already available on announcement day. Epic’s March 2018 announcement records the scope and opt-in framing.

Sony’s PS4 beta marked a policy shift
On September 26, 2018, Sony announced an open beta for Fortnite gameplay, progression, and commerce across PS4, Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, Windows, and Mac. Sony said it had identified a path to support cross-platform features for select third-party content. The announcement was a policy change, not a declaration that every PlayStation game would support cross-play. Sony’s announcement described a comprehensive evaluation of user experience, technical and social considerations, and business mechanics.

Epic later described Sony’s beta as the point Fortnite achieved full cross-play across mobile, PC, and major consoles. The chronology shows why the change was not simply a technical switch: platform policy and business considerations were part of the decision alongside engineering.

How does cross-play work between console and PC?
At the player level, someone on one platform joins friends on another when the game supports that combination. Underneath, several systems have to cooperate:
- Recognizable identity: the game needs a way to identify a player across devices. Account linking can connect platform accounts to the game’s own account.
- Shared social graph: friends and invitations must work across platform networks, rather than being limited to each console’s native friend list.
- Parties and presence: players need to see who is available, form a group, and remain together as they enter a match.
- Platform integration: console APIs and platform-specific interface or policy requirements affect how invites and social features are presented.
- Matchmaking and monitoring: the game must place supported players together and watch for operational or security issues.
Epic’s retrospective says Fortnite first used an XMPP-based party approach, then built its own Party Service as scale and security needs grew. The service, created in 2019, supported parties of up to 16 players, according to Epic; that is a reported system capacity, not an audience figure. Epic describes the work as addressing security, client authority, persistence, scale, and console integration for invites and native friend lists. Epic’s technical retrospective also explains why console parties could be difficult to bridge: they were often tied to a particular console ecosystem and did not include users on other platforms.

Can Xbox and PlayStation play together?
Yes, when a particular game supports cross-play between those consoles. Fortnite is one example in Epic’s dated July 14, 2025 overview, which also names Fall Guys and Rocket League and lists PS4/PS5, Xbox Series S/X, Nintendo Switch/Switch 2, PC, and mobile as platform examples. That is Epic’s company overview, not an independently verified exhaustive compatibility list, and it should not be read as proof that every mode or platform pairing is supported. Epic’s 2025 overview provides those examples.

Why did PlayStation block cross-play?
Sony’s 2018 announcement framed its earlier position as a decision involving technical, social, and business considerations, rather than a single technical obstacle. Its open beta for Fortnite was a major policy shift, with Sony saying it had found a way to support cross-platform features for select third-party games. That statement applied to the selected content and beta described at the time; it was not a promise of universal cross-play across PlayStation games.
How the work continued beyond Fortnite’s 2018 moment
Epic later extended some of the social infrastructure through its cross-play overlay. In August 2023, Epic said the overlay expanded from PC to initial support for Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PlayStation. It described features for authentication, combined friend lists, invites, and joinability, designed to work with each platform’s native requirements. Epic’s overlay announcement describes the expansion.
Epic said in 2023 that its account ecosystem included more than 750 million accounts. That is a company-reported account count, not the number of active players or people who used cross-play. The broader lesson is that cross-play depends on social and account systems as much as on the match itself; a large account network does not establish how many people play across platforms.
