ASPM can help an enterprise see and prioritize application-security findings across its software lifecycle, but it cannot secure a Web3 deployment by itself. A resilient program also needs contract assurance, identity and endpoint controls, protected signing and custody, clear ownership, and incident readiness.

What Web3 changes about enterprise security

Web3 is a proposed direction for internet architecture, not a single product or a guarantee that an application is decentralized. NIST describes the vision as more user-centric, with decentralized data, and notes that adoption raises security and privacy concerns. Its A Security Perspective on the Web3 Paradigm (NIST IR 8475, published February 25, 2025) is a high-level orientation, not a technical implementation guide.

For an enterprise, the security boundary can extend beyond application code to include the software supply chain, user and administrator identities, endpoints, transaction-signing infrastructure, physical custody, personnel, and governance. OWASP’s Web3 operational-security guidance also highlights characteristics that can change the risk context: public ledgers may expose transaction relationships, signed transactions may be irreversible, and distributed teams and community channels can add exposure. These are considerations to assess for the specific deployment, not assumptions that apply identically to every blockchain system.

Separate application security, contract assurance, and operations

These workstreams overlap, but they answer different questions. The OWASP Blockchain AppSec Standard is a knowledge base for blockchain security, aimed at architects, developers, and security professionals. OWASP identifies its Smart Contract Security Verification Standard as the separate resource that sufficiently covers smart-contract security.

  • Ultra-Durable & Portable: Featuring a rotating metal cover, this key is water, crush, and tamper-resistant. It fits easily on a keychain and requires no batteries or network connectivity.
  • Check FIDO2 compatibility before purchase - Known limitations: ID Austria is not supported (requires FIDO2 Level 2). Windows Hello login only works with Windows Enterprise editions that support Entra ID, and NFC is NOT supported.
  • Blockchain application security: assess the application and its broader dependencies, interfaces, build and deployment paths, and runtime context.
  • Smart-contract assurance: verify contract logic and security properties using an appropriate contract-focused standard and review process.
  • Operational security: protect the people, identities, endpoints, signing processes, custody arrangements, and organizational procedures that operate the system.

A contract audit does not establish that privileged accounts are well governed or that signing devices are protected. Likewise, general enterprise IT controls do not replace contract-specific verification. Keep ownership and evidence for each area explicit, then connect them through shared risk and incident processes.

Where ASPM fits—and where it does not

OWASP DevSecOps guidance describes Application Security Posture Management (ASPM) as continuously collecting, correlating, and contextualizing security data across the software lifecycle, from source control through build to runtime. Listed inputs include findings from static application security testing (SAST), software composition analysis (SCA), dynamic application security testing (DAST), container scanning, and infrastructure-as-code scanning.

That makes ASPM a risk-management and triage layer: it can help teams reduce disconnected findings, relate issues to applications or dependencies, prioritize remediation, and track ownership. It is not a scanner, a substitute for engineering controls, or a complete operational-security program. The underlying tools still need to test the right assets, and people still need to investigate and fix the risks.

Evaluate fit against your own lifecycle

  • Coverage: confirm integrations for the scanners and lifecycle stages your organization actually uses.
  • Finding quality: determine how the system normalizes, correlates, and deduplicates results so teams can distinguish related findings from separate risks.
  • Context: check whether a finding can be connected to the relevant application, dependency, build, or runtime information needed for triage.
  • Workflow: assess whether teams can assign an accountable owner, track remediation, and see the status of unresolved work.

These are category-level evaluation criteria, not claims about any particular platform. Treat ASPM as useful only to the extent that its integrations and context match the systems and workflows in scope.

Build Web3 controls around five operating principles

The OWASP Smart Contract Security handbook frames Web3 operational security separately from both smart-contract security and generic enterprise IT security. It identifies five principles that can guide control design:

  1. Defense in depth: use multiple complementary safeguards rather than relying on one audit, device, or access control.
  2. Least privilege: give each identity only the permissions needed for its role and reduce standing access where practical.
  3. Need-to-know: limit access to sensitive information and processes to people who require it for their responsibilities.
  4. Compartmentalization: separate duties, environments, and access paths so one compromised account or process does not automatically expose everything.
  5. Continuous monitoring: monitor relevant activity and control status so teams can detect changes and respond rather than treating security as a one-time review.

Apply these principles across organizational, personnel, physical, and technical domains. The following sequence turns them into a working program.

Establish scope, ownership, and risk before selecting controls

  1. Identify what the enterprise operates. Map applications, contracts, dependencies, build and deployment systems, privileged identities, endpoints used for access or signing, custody arrangements, and external service or community touchpoints.
  2. Assign accountable owners. Make clear who owns application findings, contract verification, identity administration, signing and custody, incident decisions, and risk acceptance. Define how those owners escalate issues across teams.
  3. Analyze deployment-specific threats. Consider what an attacker could do with a compromised developer account, administrator identity, endpoint, signing process, or dependency. Assess privacy exposure and transaction consequences in the context of the actual network and application.
  4. Assess vulnerabilities and business impact. Combine technical findings with the application’s role, access paths, data exposure, and potential transaction impact. Avoid treating a raw scanner count as a complete risk measure.
  5. Choose and track controls. Prioritize safeguards against the identified risks, document exceptions and owners, and review whether controls remain effective as code, personnel, and operational arrangements change.

Protect identities, endpoints, and signing paths

Identity and privileged access

Apply least privilege and compartmentalization to accounts that can change code, deploy contracts, administer infrastructure, or authorize transactions. Separate duties where feasible, restrict access to sensitive processes, and monitor privileged activity. The particular access model depends on the deployment; the essential practice is to know which identities can affect which assets and to review that relationship as responsibilities change.

Endpoints in privileged or signing workflows

OWASP’s operational guidance names endpoint measures such as full-disk encryption, endpoint detection and response (EDR) reporting, automatic updates, and application allowlisting as part of a baseline for devices used in signing or privileged-access paths. These controls reduce exposure on the device side, but do not independently validate a transaction or secure the wider custody process.

Signing infrastructure and physical custody

Signing deserves its own process and ownership because a valid signature may authorize an consequential action. OWASP treats physical custody hardware as a distinct control domain and discusses dedicated, single-purpose devices for high-value signing. A hardware wallet or other dedicated signer may be relevant where it fits the organization’s requirements, but device selection alone does not establish secure custody.

Assess device suitability alongside governance, who can access and authorize signing, how recovery is handled, and how the organization maintains custody. No particular model or enterprise configuration is established by the guidance cited here.

Connect findings to remediation and incident readiness

Use ASPM to bring application and supply-chain findings into a shared triage process, then connect that process to the operational controls protecting identities, endpoints, and signing. A finding should have enough context for a team to understand what it affects, an accountable owner, and a tracked remediation decision. Contract verification remains a distinct assurance activity rather than just another generic scanner result.

Prepare incident procedures for the systems and authorities that can act on the deployment. Teams should know how to escalate a suspected compromise, who can suspend or change affected access where applicable, who makes custody or transaction decisions, and how technical and organizational stakeholders coordinate. Test the procedures against plausible scenarios, including a compromised privileged endpoint or suspected exposure of signing credentials.

OWASP and NIST provide guidance and orientation, not certification that a vendor, tool, or enterprise deployment is secure. ASPM, contract review, and operational controls work best as connected parts of a program with defined scope, ownership, and response paths.
