Enshrouded supports solo/offline play and online co-op for groups of up to 16. Friends can join a session hosted by a player, or play on a dedicated server that runs separately from its owner’s game. You do not need to rent a server for ordinary co-op; rental or self-hosting is useful when you want the world to remain available while the player who would otherwise host is offline. These details reflect Keen Games’ official information available on October 9, 2026, when the game was still in Early Access and Steam 1.0 was scheduled for October 15, 2026.
Can you play Enshrouded with friends?
Yes. Keen Games describes Enshrouded as a cooperative online multiplayer game, and its FAQ says groups can play with up to 16 people. You can also play solo and offline. For a group, the main decision is whether one player can host whenever everyone wants to play or whether the world should be available independently of that player’s game session. Keen Games’ FAQ covers the game’s co-op and solo options.
“Up to 16” is the documented group limit, not a guarantee that any computer or connection will perform equally well with a full group. Keen’s server configuration documentation allows a dedicated server to be set for 1–16 slots and warns that adding slots increases performance impact. The actual experience depends in part on the server’s resources and network capacity. Keen’s slot-count guidance
What are the multiplayer options?
There are three practical ways to play: solo/offline, a player-hosted session, or a dedicated server. The distinction that matters most is availability: in a player-hosted session, the host must be playing; a dedicated server can stay running even when its owner is not in the game.

How does player-hosted co-op work?
In peer-to-peer co-op, one player hosts from within the game. Other participants connect to that hosted session. The host has to be playing for the others to join; when the host leaves, the session is not an always-available world. This arrangement is often the simplest fit for a small group whose players are happy to play when the host is available. It avoids the need to configure or pay for a separate dedicated server.
The host can control participant permissions rather than making every visitor unrestricted. Keen’s role documentation describes presets for visitors, helpers, friends, and admins. Depending on assigned permissions, participants’ ability to edit the world or a base, access chests and other containers, or use kick and ban controls can differ. Choose this option if
- One player is reliably available to host each session.
- The group prefers not to administer a separate server or pay a provider to keep one running.
- The host is comfortable setting participant permissions for the group.
Do not treat a player-hosted session as a persistent world: it depends on the host being in the game. If friends need to play at different times, a dedicated server is the relevant alternative.
What does a dedicated server change?
A dedicated server runs separately from a player’s game session. Friends can connect while its owner is not in-game, provided the server itself is running and accessible. That makes it a better fit for groups with different schedules, but it shifts responsibility to whoever runs the server or pays a provider to run it.
You can self-host or rent server hosting. Keen’s FAQ says dedicated servers are an option for groups that do not want their friends to depend on them being online, identifies GPortal as an in-game rental partner, and says other providers can also be used. A rental is a choice, not a requirement for ordinary co-op. Current prices, locations, terms, and slot availability are not established by that FAQ, so check the provider’s current listing before choosing a plan. Keen Games’ FAQ

Self-hosting versus renting
- Self-hosting: You run and maintain the server yourself. You need a suitable machine and sufficient network capacity; Keen publishes dated recommended specifications for different group sizes. This can suit someone willing to manage the server rather than pay a hosting provider.
- Renting: A provider runs the server, so your group does not need to supply a server PC. You still need to choose a provider and suitable capacity, and availability depends on that service and whether the server is running. Confirm current plan details directly with the provider.
Neither choice changes the central co-op limit: Keen’s documented dedicated-server configuration permits between 1 and 16 slots. The configured slot count is a capacity setting, not evidence that a server has adequate performance at every setting.

Keen’s FAQ gives a maximum group size of 16, while its dedicated-server configuration documentation says the slotCount setting must be between 1 and 16. The documentation also warns that each added player slot increases server performance impact. Set the capacity to match the group you actually expect rather than assuming that the maximum is the best setting for every machine. Keen’s configuration guide
For a self-hosted server, Keen’s January 12, 2024 recommendations distinguish between 4–6 active players and a 16-player server. These are planning recommendations published for those group sizes, not a guarantee of performance, and the age of the guidance matters when buying or upgrading hardware.

Keen also recommends download capacity roughly matching upload. Each additional saved world may use up to 100 MB. These figures come from Keen’s Recommended Server Specifications, dated January 12, 2024; verify current requirements before making a hardware purchase. If one PC runs both the game and the dedicated server, Keen recommends stronger specifications for that combined workload. A rented server does not require you to buy a server PC, and peer-to-peer play does not require dedicated-server hardware.
How do roles, permissions, and reserved slots work?
Server access is not necessarily all-or-nothing. For peer-to-peer sessions, Keen documents visitor, helper, friend, and admin permission presets. For dedicated servers, it describes configurable user groups. Permissions can govern actions such as editing a world or base, opening containers, and kicking or banning players. Dedicated-server groups can also have reserved slots. Keen warns that a server may appear full to a player joining under a group that has no reserved slot if slots have been reserved for other groups. If someone cannot join despite the server having reserved capacity, check how the server’s groups and reserved slots are configured.

Before inviting a group
- Agree who can change the world or other players’ builds.
- Decide who should have access to chests and other containers.
- Limit administrative actions such as kicking or banning to the people who need them.
- For dedicated servers, explain any group or reserved-slot arrangement to participants.
Does character progress carry between servers?
Some character progress follows the character, but world-linked progress does not all transfer. Keen’s FAQ says characters can move between servers while retaining equipment, inventory, levels, and unlocked skills. It also lists map memory, personal crafting recipes, collected Shroud roots, found lore and tutorials, and towers the character found personally as retained. Keen’s character-transfer FAQ
By contrast, most crafting recipes tied to a world’s NPCs and crafting stations, available NPC summons, and towers discovered by other players do not transfer, according to the same FAQ. Do not interpret the character-transfer list as meaning that every quest or world-state detail is shared between servers; the FAQ does not establish that broader claim. If the group is moving an established character to another world, distinguish personal character progress from discoveries and unlocks attached to the original world.
Is there PvP, cross-play, or console server support?
Keen’s FAQ currently says there is no PvP mode and none is planned, describing the game as cooperative. That statement is time-sensitive because the game was still in active development at the research date; check Keen’s current FAQ for any post-launch change. The material available here does not establish current public matchmaking behavior, cross-platform play, or console compatibility with dedicated servers. Do not assume that players on different platforms can join the same session or that PC server instructions apply to consoles without current official confirmation.

How do you get started with a dedicated server?
The right starting point depends on whether you want to administer the server. For a rental, compare current provider details and follow that provider’s setup instructions. For self-hosting, Keen’s Steam instructions say the dedicated-server tool is listed under the Steam Library’s Tools section once game ownership is unlocked. The documented guidance here does not establish current rental prices, regional availability, or every step of a current network setup, so use Keen’s live instructions rather than guessing at settings.
- Choose the hosting model. Use peer-to-peer if the host’s play schedule works for everyone; choose a dedicated server if the world should remain available while that player is out of the game.
- For self-hosting, locate the tool. In Steam, open Library, select the Tools section, and find the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool. Keen says it becomes available after game ownership is unlocked. Installation instructions
- Set capacity for the group. Configure a slot count from 1 to 16, accounting for the documented performance impact of each added slot. Configuration instructions
- Plan hardware and bandwidth if self-hosting. Use Keen’s dated recommendations as a starting point, and account for the fact that running the game and server on one PC increases the combined workload.
- Set participant permissions. Decide which roles can edit, access containers, or use administrative actions. If you configure reserved slots, tell the group who is eligible to use them.
- Keep the server running and accessible. A dedicated server lets friends connect without its owner being in-game, but the server itself still has to be running and accessible.
Keen’s Steam installation article described Windows support and Linux support as planned when that article was written; that historical wording does not establish current Linux support. Check the live installation documentation before choosing a host operating system or following older setup instructions.
