Encrypted DNS protects the connection between your device and the DNS resolver it uses. DNS over HTTPS (DoH), DNS over TLS (DoT), and DNS over QUIC (DoQ) do this with different transport protocols: HTTPS, TLS, and QUIC. Each can make DNS questions harder for an on-path observer to read or alter, but none hides those questions from the resolver, and none replaces DNSSEC.
What is encrypted DNS?
When a device needs to reach a domain, it sends a DNS question to a resolver and receives a response. With ordinary DNS transport, that exchange is not protected by the transport encryption described in the standards for DoH, DoT, and DoQ. Encrypted DNS wraps the exchange in a protected connection from the client to a selected resolver.
That connection has a defined boundary: it runs from the client to the resolver, not all the way to every system involved in answering the question. A network observer on that path may be prevented from reading the DNS question itself when encryption is correctly configured and the client authenticates the intended resolver. The resolver still has to receive the question to answer it.

How do DoH, DoT, and DoQ carry DNS?
The protocols differ mainly in what they put DNS messages inside. That choice affects how they fit with software and networks, but the protocol name alone does not establish which will be fastest or most private in a particular setup.
| Protocol | DNS exchange is carried over | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| DoH | HTTP over HTTPS/TLS; RFC 8484 specifies an IP, TCP, TLS, and HTTP stack. | DNS questions and responses are represented as HTTP exchanges, allowing HTTP features such as caching, redirection, proxying, authentication, and compression. |
| DoT | TLS | DNS is carried directly over TLS, with the standard focused on privacy for stub-to-recursive resolver traffic. |
| DoQ | QUIC, with TLS security as part of QUIC | DNS messages map directly onto QUIC connections without an HTTP layer. |
DoH: DNS over HTTPS
RFC 8484 defines a way to exchange DNS query-response pairs using HTTP. HTTPS supplies confidentiality and integrity for the client-to-server channel when the connection is set up with authentication of the intended server. Because DoH uses HTTP, it can use HTTP’s surrounding infrastructure and features; that integration can be useful in some environments, but it also means DoH has HTTP-related behaviors and privacy considerations that direct DNS transports do not share in the same way.
The specified DoH stack uses TCP and TLS beneath HTTP. DoH can also run with HTTP/3 to obtain some QUIC benefits, but that does not make it the same protocol as DoQ: DoH retains HTTP as the layer carrying the DNS exchange.
DoT: DNS over TLS
RFC 7858 specifies DNS over TLS for privacy on the client-to-resolver path. Rather than represent each DNS exchange as an HTTP request, DoT carries DNS using TLS. Its focus includes stub-to-recursive traffic, the path between a client-side DNS component and the recursive resolver it uses, and the standard discusses usage profiles and performance considerations.
DoT’s direct TLS mapping can make it a natural fit where client software and the chosen resolver support that transport. It does not, by itself, determine which resolver a device should use or what that resolver does with the queries it receives.

DoQ: DNS over QUIC
RFC 9250 maps DNS messages directly onto QUIC connections. QUIC is secured using TLS as part of the QUIC protocol. It uses streams and packet-loss recovery designed for QUIC, avoiding TCP’s head-of-line blocking between streams. The RFC describes DoQ’s privacy properties as similar to DoT’s and its latency characteristics as similar to classic DNS over UDP.
Those are protocol design characteristics, not a guarantee that DoQ will be faster for every user. The actual experience depends on the implementation and network path. DoQ also differs from DoH even when DoH uses HTTP/3: DoQ carries DNS directly over QUIC, while DoH carries DNS through HTTP.

What does encrypted DNS protect—and what remains visible?
What the client-to-resolver encryption can do
When a client uses an encrypted transport and authenticates the intended resolver, encryption helps stop passive observers on the path from reading DNS questions. It also helps protect the exchange against on-path tampering or diversion. This matters on networks where an observer could otherwise inspect or interfere with traffic between the device and resolver.
The protection is specific to that connection. It does not make the resolver unable to see the DNS questions it receives, nor does it erase the fact that the client connected to a resolver. A resolver can associate queries with the client connection, so choosing an encrypted transport does not remove the need to decide which operator you trust with DNS activity.
What network observers may still learn
Encryption does not eliminate traffic analysis or correlation. IP addresses remain visible to network observers, and connection patterns can still reveal information even when the DNS message content is protected. The observer’s view is therefore reduced, not made information-free.

DoH also has HTTP-layer privacy considerations. Cookies and request-header fingerprints can act as correlators. RFC 8484 says DoH clients should not accept cookies unless a use case explicitly requires them. Long-lived connections can improve performance, but grouping requests on a persistent connection may expose more information for correlation.
Why the resolver remains important
All three protocols deliver queries to a resolver. Encryption changes how the traffic travels to that service; it does not change the service’s role in receiving the questions. The resolver’s privacy practices, retention policies, and operational choices therefore remain material to a user’s privacy decision. The protocols alone do not establish those practices.
Does encrypted DNS replace DNSSEC?
No. Encrypted DNS and DNSSEC address different parts of the problem and can be used together. DoH, DoT, and DoQ protect the communication channel between client and resolver. DNSSEC enables validation of signed DNS data, providing response-data integrity.
A secure channel can help ensure that an on-path observer cannot read or modify the exchange without detection when the intended server is authenticated. It does not, by itself, establish that the DNS data the resolver returns is cryptographically validated. Conversely, DNSSEC validation does not encrypt the client-to-resolver exchange. Treating one as a substitute for the other confuses transport privacy with DNS data validation.
How should you choose between DoH, DoT, and DoQ?
There is no universal winner. The useful choice depends on what your client, operating system, resolver, and network support, as well as which resolver you are prepared to trust.

Check support across the whole path
A protocol is useful only if the relevant client and resolver can use it, and the network path permits the connection. Check the actual configuration options in the operating system or application and the resolver’s supported transports. Do not infer support from a protocol’s technical advantages alone.
Consider integration needs
DoH’s HTTP integration can fit software and infrastructure already built around HTTP features such as proxying or authentication. DoT and DoQ are direct DNS transport mappings rather than HTTP exchanges. That distinction may matter to application developers, network operators, and users whose environments rely on particular DNS handling, but it does not make one transport inherently the best choice in every setting.
Evaluate connection behavior without assuming a speed winner
RFC 8484 specifies DoH over TCP/TLS, RFC 7858 specifies DoT over TLS, and RFC 9250 specifies DoQ over QUIC. QUIC’s streams and loss-recovery design aim to avoid TCP’s head-of-line blocking between streams, while the DoQ RFC describes latency characteristics similar to classic DNS over UDP. These protocol properties do not predict an individual user’s measured performance: implementation details and network conditions matter. Use actual support and observed behavior in your environment rather than assuming that a transport label guarantees lower latency.
Choose the resolver deliberately
Encrypted transport does not make every resolver interchangeable. The client must identify and authenticate the intended resolver, and the information needed to configure or discover one can extend beyond a server IP address. Depending on deployment, clients may need a resolver hostname, alternate addresses, a non-standard port, or a URI template. Those details help the client locate the service and establish which service it intends to contact; they do not answer whether its privacy policy is acceptable.
How are encrypted resolvers discovered?
Encrypted DNS requires more than knowing an IP address in some deployments. RFC 9462 describes information clients may need, including a resolver hostname, alternate addresses, non-standard ports, and URI templates. It also describes discovery of designated encrypted resolvers.

RFC 9463 defines DHCP and Router Advertisement options for network-designated resolvers using DoH, DoT, or DoQ. The information can include a DNS Authentication Domain Name, IP addresses, and service parameters. This makes it possible for a network to advertise designated resolver information through those mechanisms rather than requiring every client to be configured in isolation.
Discovery and authentication are related but distinct. Discovery supplies the client with information about a resolver to use; authentication helps ensure the client is communicating with the intended server. A configuration that points to a resolver without correctly identifying it does not provide the same protection as a properly authenticated encrypted connection.
Why can encrypted DNS disrupt local network filtering?
Some networks use filtering or inspection systems that expect DNS traffic to be visible locally. When a client protects DNS confidentiality and integrity with TLS-based transports, those systems cannot handle the queries as they would when DNS is visible. RFC 8484 notes that such systems will not function as intended unless adapted to the deployment.
This can matter in managed workplaces, schools, or other networks with explicit DNS controls. It is an operational compatibility issue, not evidence that encryption is broken. If a network requires particular filtering, an administrator may need a compatible resolver and policy design; a user should not assume that a locally configured encrypted resolver will automatically preserve the network’s DNS controls.
A practical way to assess an encrypted DNS setup
- Identify the client and resolver. Determine which operating system or application is making DNS queries and which resolver it is configured to use. A device can have more than one DNS-related component, so establish which configuration applies to the traffic in question.
- Confirm the supported transport. Check whether both the client and the selected resolver support DoH, DoT, or DoQ. The protocol’s standards-based properties do not help if one end does not support it.
- Verify resolver identity settings. Confirm the configuration identifies the intended resolver and supports authentication, using the hostname or other service parameters required by that deployment. Do not treat an IP address alone as proof of identity.
- Consider network policy. If the device is on a managed or filtered network, check whether its DNS controls rely on visible local DNS traffic. Encrypted DNS may need to be integrated with those controls to work as intended.
- Review the resolver’s privacy terms. Since the resolver receives the questions, assess its data practices separately from the transport encryption. The protocol cannot vouch for the service operator.
- Test the actual configuration. Confirm that the client is using the chosen encrypted transport and that name lookups continue to work on the networks where you need them. If a lookup fails, check client support, resolver settings, identity parameters, and network compatibility rather than assuming that encryption itself is the sole cause.
The key distinction
DoH, DoT, and DoQ all encrypt the client-to-resolver DNS exchange when correctly configured, but they carry DNS through different transports: HTTP over HTTPS/TLS, TLS directly, and QUIC directly. Choose based on support, configuration, network compatibility, and trust in the resolver—not on an assumption that one protocol hides all browsing activity or is always faster. DNSSEC remains a separate tool for validating signed DNS data.
