Elephants communicate through more than sound: their social signals include low-frequency calls, vibrations detectable through the ground, chemical cues, visual signals, and touch. Humans commonly rely on learned spoken and written languages; the evidence summarized here does not support treating elephant calls as words in a hidden human-like language, or ranking elephants, humans, and great apes on one scale. The clearest comparison is about the channels each uses, the social functions signals serve, and what researchers can—and cannot—conclude from the evidence.

What makes elephant communication different?

Elephant communication is a multisensory system embedded in social life. Acoustic calls are important, but they are one part of a broader set of signals that also includes vibration, chemical cues, sight, and touch. That matters because communication is not just a sound with a fixed translation: who is signaling, who is receiving, their relationship, and the surrounding circumstances can all shape what a signal does.

For African elephants, low-frequency vocalizations called rumbles are among the best-studied signals. A 2010 review by Joseph Soltis describes perhaps nine acoustically distinct call types in the African elephant vocal repertoire, with rumbles especially common and variable. The qualifier “perhaps” matters: this is a reviewed estimate for a particular species and acoustic repertoire, not a complete count of all elephant signals or a universal inventory for every elephant population.

Humans also communicate through multiple channels, including gesture and other nonverbal cues, but everyday coordination commonly depends on learned spoken and written languages. Those languages use conventional vocabulary and grammar, and people can combine elements to express many new ideas. This is a broad contrast, not a claim that elephant communication is limited or that human language is the only meaningful kind of communication.

What do elephant rumbles do?

Help maintain contact

Soltis’s review reports evidence that closely bonded females separated from one another exchange contact calls. Such calls can help coordinate movement or support reunion. This is a functional account: the evidence links calls with contact in a social situation. It does not provide a word-for-word translation of what a caller “says,” nor does it show that every rumble has the same meaning regardless of context.

Contact is especially important to understand as a relationship-based function. A call can be useful because a receiver detects it and responds, even if the signal does not encode a sentence or a specific name. The review also discusses call structure as potentially carrying information about the caller’s identity and aspects of the caller’s state. These are interpretations supported by patterns in calls, not a decoded dictionary that assigns a precise human phrase to each sound.

Play a role in mate attraction

The reviewed evidence also identifies rumbles produced by males and females in mate-attraction contexts. This is a second well-supported functional category in the material available: some rumbles are associated with attracting or locating potential mates, while others help maintain contact between separated individuals. The existence of these functions does not mean every rumble is a contact call or a mating signal; calls are variable, and their use depends on context.

Researchers can study when calls occur, how their acoustic structure varies, and how other elephants respond. That allows them to infer signal functions and sometimes caller-related information. It is a different kind of conclusion from translating a call into a human word. Saying that a rumble has a contact or mate-attraction function is more defensible than claiming it “means” a particular sentence.

Can elephants communicate through the ground?

Elephants can detect seismic information: vibrations transmitted through the ground. Low-frequency calls can couple into the ground, so a call may create both airborne sound and vibration. A review by Caitlin E. O’Connell-Rodwell describes behavioral evidence for seismic sensing, including playback work summarized as showing that elephants can discriminate callers or call types using seismic cues.

Soltis’s 2010 review reports that elephants respond to rumbles at distances of up to 2.5 km. Read that as a reported response distance in the review, not as a guaranteed communication radius. It does not establish that every rumble travels that far, that every elephant can detect every call at that distance, or that the same distance applies across habitats and conditions.

There are two separate claims to keep distinct. The basic finding that elephants can detect seismic cues has behavioral support. More specific claims—such as exactly how a vibration is received, how far a particular seismic component travels, or how routinely elephants use ground-borne cues to communicate over long distances—require greater qualification. Ground transmission and detection can depend on conditions, and the evidence does not justify treating every proposed mechanism or range as settled.

So, “Can elephants communicate through the ground?” has a careful answer: they can detect seismic information, and playback findings indicate that ground-borne cues can provide information about a caller or call type. That is not the same as proving a fully decoded seismic vocabulary or a fixed long-distance range for everyday communication.

What other channels do elephants use?

A Cambridge University Press chapter summary on elephant communication and cognition covers chemical, vibrational, visual, and tactile channels alongside acoustic communication. Angela Stoeger’s 2021 chapter on sound production and perception states that “acoustic signals play a fundamental role within elephant societies.” “Fundamental” does not mean “exclusive”: sound is central in the account, while other sensory channels contribute to communication in ways that depend on the situation.

These channels can matter together. A receiver may encounter a sound, vibration, visual cue, or touch in a particular social setting rather than interpreting an isolated signal in a vacuum. The Cambridge chapter also places communication in a wider context that includes cognition, social learning, culture, disturbance, and conservation. In practical terms, studying one call without its social context risks missing what makes it useful to the animals involved.

The available material establishes these channels at a broad level; it does not provide a complete, directly comparable inventory of every chemical, visual, or tactile signal and its meaning. It is therefore more accurate to describe elephants as communicating through multiple sensory modalities than to offer an exhaustive list of translated signals that the evidence here does not establish.

How does this compare with humans and great apes?

A useful comparison keeps separate the sensory channel, the signal’s function, its social setting, and the strength of evidence. It avoids treating “communication” and “language” as synonyms. All three groups can communicate socially, but the sources available for this comparison do not supply equal detail about their systems.

Comparison Elephants Humans Great apes
Channels highlighted in the available sources Acoustic and seismic cues are especially well covered; chemical, visual, and tactile channels are also described. Learned spoken and written languages are a prominent everyday means of coordination; this is a broad contrast, not a full account of human communication. The sources cited here do not provide a detailed, directly comparable inventory of communication channels.
Signals or systems described African elephant vocal behavior includes perhaps nine acoustically distinct call types in Soltis’s review, with common, variable rumbles among them; seismic cues have behavioral support. Learned languages use conventional vocabularies and grammar, supporting the combination of elements into new expressions. Don Kulick’s 2017 article discusses the history and debate around attempts to teach human language to apes, not a full comparison of ape communication mechanisms.
Social functions established in the material Evidence reviewed supports contact calls between separated, closely bonded females and mate-attraction rumbles; call structure may also reflect identity and caller state. Language is described broadly as a common way people coordinate and express ideas. The cited source set does not compare particular human functions with particular elephant or ape signals. The available sources do not support a detailed functional comparison with elephant calls.
Evidence and limits Reviews describe vocal behavior and behavioral evidence for seismic detection; exact interpretations and ranges need qualification. The comparison is high-level; no source here sets out a technical, side-by-side analysis of linguistic structure. The cited ape-language scholarship provides historical and conceptual context, not enough detail to rank ape systems or generalize across great-ape species.

The table is intentionally uneven. It reflects what the cited sources establish rather than implying that the amount of detail available for one group measures that group’s communicative ability. In particular, a history of efforts to teach human language to apes is not evidence that all great-ape communication is simple, nor is it a comprehensive description of how different ape species communicate in their own social settings.

Kulick’s 2017 Annual Review of Anthropology article is useful here for the history and ethical and conceptual debate around human–animal communication. It does not supply the fine-grained, directly comparable evidence needed to make claims about great-ape syntax, gesture, vocal learning, or intentionality alongside the elephant findings. The responsible conclusion is a cautious high-level comparison, not a verdict that one group is categorically superior.

Do elephant rumbles mean anything like words?

The strongest evidence described here supports functions and caller-related information, not a word-for-word translation system. A rumble can be associated with maintaining contact or mate attraction; its structure may vary with caller identity or aspects of state. Those are meaningful forms of communication even when they do not map neatly onto human words.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is also important not to confuse a signal having information with a signal being a word. A receiver may use a call to respond appropriately to a caller or situation. That does not, by itself, establish a conventional vocabulary, grammar, or human-like language. The evidence summarized here supports neither dismissing elephant communication as meaningless noise nor claiming that elephants speak a hidden language.

A 2014 review, “Vocal learning in elephants: neural bases and adaptive context,” describes the field as still early in understanding the context, function, and neural processing of elephant vocal learning. That is a reason to be precise about what has been demonstrated: specialized vocal behavior and communication functions are supported, while stronger claims about human-style words or grammar are not established by these sources.

How to read claims about animal communication

When evaluating a claim about elephants, humans, or great apes, ask what kind of evidence it describes. A behavioral response to playback can show that an animal detects or discriminates a signal under the tested conditions. Observed call use can support a proposed function. Acoustic variation may offer clues about caller identity or state. None of those findings automatically proves that researchers have decoded a complete language.

  • Separate the channel from the function. “Seismic” describes how a cue can travel; “contact” describes a proposed social function.
  • Keep the scope attached to numbers. The estimate of perhaps nine call types concerns the reviewed African elephant vocal repertoire; the reported response distance of up to 2.5 km comes from Soltis’s 2010 review and is not a universal range.
  • Distinguish detection from interpretation. Evidence that elephants detect ground-borne cues is stronger than precise claims about the mechanism, range, or meaning of every seismic signal.
  • Do not compare evidence volume as ability. The sources here describe elephant signals in more detail than great-ape mechanisms, but that imbalance cannot establish that one group communicates better.
  • Use “language” carefully. Communication can carry useful social information without being a human-style system of words and grammar.

What the evidence supports—and what it does not

Elephants have a socially embedded communication system in which low-frequency rumbles are important, contact and mate attraction are supported call functions, and seismic detection has behavioral evidence. Chemical, visual, and tactile cues broaden that system beyond sound. These findings show specialized communication adapted to elephant social life, not a literal translation key or proof of human-like language.

For humans, the contrast is that learned spoken and written languages—with conventional vocabularies and grammar—are central to everyday coordination. For great apes, the cited scholarship supports discussion of the history and debate over attempts to teach human language, but it is not enough for a fine-grained comparison of communication mechanisms. The most accurate answer is therefore a comparison of documented channels and functions, with the limits of the evidence kept visible rather than a single ranking of humans, apes, and elephants.
