Electrostatic decatalysis is a proposed way to improve electrochemical selectivity by charging the electrode surface so an unwanted reaction becomes harder to reach. In the reported laboratory demonstration, a positively charged polymer coating on carbon-nanotube electrodes suppressed hydrogen evolution while favoring nitrate conversion to ammonia. A negatively charged coating pushed the same chemistry in the opposite direction.

The result is a promising selectivity concept, not yet an established industrial process. Its central constraint is fundamental: the target reactant must carry a charge for long-range Coulombic attraction or repulsion to steer its access to the electrode.

What electrostatic decatalysis changes

Most electrocatalyst development changes the catalyst itself. Researchers alter composition, crystal structure, defects, porosity or support materials to make the desired reaction faster. Those changes can also accelerate a competing reaction because both pathways use the same active surface and electrical input.

Electrostatic decatalysis takes a different approach. Instead of relying only on a catalyst’s intrinsic activity, it uses the electric charge at the electrode–liquid interface to influence which dissolved species can approach the surface. A charged coating acts as an access-control layer: species with the unfavorable charge are discouraged, while oppositely charged species are concentrated near the electrode.

The aim is not necessarily to make the desired reaction intrinsically faster. It is to reduce the rate of a parasitic pathway enough that more of the supplied electrons and surface time go to the intended product.

The nitrate-to-ammonia problem

The demonstration examined electrochemical nitrate reduction, a process that can convert nitrate into ammonia. Hydrogen evolution is a major competing reaction in the same environment. Protons or water can accept electrons at the electrode and form hydrogen, consuming current that would otherwise support nitrate conversion.

That competition creates a selectivity problem. A surface that is highly active for electron transfer may still produce substantial hydrogen if protons can reach the catalytic interface easily. Electrostatic decatalysis attempts to alter that local traffic without replacing the entire electrode material.

How the charged coatings changed the outcome

The researchers used carbon-nanotube electrodes coated with two ionomers carrying opposite charges. The cationic coating was poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride), commonly abbreviated PDDA. The anionic coating was Nafion.

Electrode coating Surface charge Reported electrostatic effect Observed reaction shift
PDDA Positive Repelled protons and attracted nitrate ions near the electrode, according to the report Hydrogen evolution was suppressed and ammonia production increased
Nafion Negative Created the opposite charge environment Hydrogen evolution was favored and ammonia production was suppressed

This opposite response is important because the coatings were compared on the same broad reaction problem. The result was not simply that one material worked and another failed: reversing the coating charge reversed the reported product tendency. That pattern is consistent with a field-driven access effect, although it does not by itself prove that electrostatics is the only variable involved.

What the positive PDDA layer is intended to do

A positively charged PDDA film should discourage positively charged proton species from accumulating at the electrode. Nitrate ions, by contrast, are negatively charged and are electrostatically attracted toward a positive interface. If nitrate becomes more available where electron transfer occurs while proton delivery becomes less favorable, nitrate reduction can gain a competitive advantage over hydrogen evolution.

Why the negative Nafion layer produced the reverse trend

An anionic Nafion coating changes the interfacial field in the other direction. It can make access for protonic species more favorable and nitrate access less favorable. The report associates that arrangement with increased hydrogen evolution and lower ammonia production, providing the counterexample needed to distinguish charge-selective steering from a simple coating benefit.

What evidence supports an electrostatic explanation

The account in Chemistry World’s 19 March 2026 report says the team combined several experimental techniques with computational modelling. The researchers considered wettability, electronic conductivity and available surface area as possible contributors alongside charge interactions.

That matters because an ionomer film can change more than electrostatic potential. It may alter how water spreads, how quickly electrons move through the interface, how ions diffuse, or how much of the carbon-nanotube surface remains exposed. A credible interpretation therefore has to examine these effects rather than assume that a change in product distribution automatically proves Coulombic steering.

The reported conclusion was that electrostatic interactions account for the opposing PDDA and Nafion behavior after those other factors were considered. The available account does not reproduce the study’s complete numerical dataset or statistical analysis, so the mechanistic claim should be understood as the authors’ reported interpretation rather than as an independently audited proof of every interfacial step.

“This approach works whenever the target substrate is charged. When the target substrate does not carry a charge, it does not work. It is based on coulombic repulsion, so the electrode carries a charge and to have the repulsion possible, the target also should carry a charge. That’s very important,” lead researcher Musthafa Ottakam Thotiyl said in the report.

The device-level result and what “more than 50%” means

The team also built a two-electrode ammonia-synthesis device. Instead of pairing nitrate reduction with the conventional oxygen-evolution counter reaction, the device used ferrocyanide oxidation at the counter electrode.

According to the Chemistry World report, the PDDA-modified electrodes delivered energy savings of more than 50% compared with a conventional nitrate-reduction/oxygen-evolution cell. The comparison is specific to that demonstrated device configuration and its operating conditions. It should not be treated as a general efficiency improvement for every nitrate electrolyzer, every counter reaction or every charged coating.

Changing the counter reaction can affect the total cell voltage because the anodic process has different kinetics and thermodynamic requirements from oxygen evolution. The reported saving therefore reflects the combined effect of the PDDA-modified cathode and the ferrocyanide-based two-electrode design, not the coating in isolation.

Why a charged target substrate is essential

Electrostatic decatalysis depends on a force between charges. Nitrate is an anion, so a positively charged interface can attract it. Protons are cationic, so the same interface can repel them. That contrast gives the electrode a way to alter the relative concentration of competing reactants near the surface.

An uncharged molecule does not experience that same direct Coulombic attraction or repulsion. It can still respond indirectly through dipoles, solvent structure, specific adsorption or changes in local fields, but those effects are not the simple charge-selection mechanism described for nitrate. The lead researcher’s boundary condition is therefore central: the strategy is expected to work when the target substrate itself is charged, and not when it lacks charge.

This requirement also affects how a new reaction should be screened. Before adding a charged ionomer, researchers need to identify the actual reactive species at the interface, its protonation state under operating conditions and the charge of the principal competing species. A molecule that is neutral in bulk solution but exists as a charged intermediate at the electrode may behave differently from a permanently neutral substrate.

Electrostatic control versus redesigning the catalyst

The two approaches solve different parts of the selectivity problem.

Question Catalyst redesign Electrostatic decatalysis
Primary intervention Changes the material’s active sites, binding energies or electron-transfer properties Changes the interfacial charge environment and the access of ionic reactants
How selectivity is pursued Makes the desired pathway kinetically more favorable Makes a competing charged species less likely to reach the surface, or concentrates the target ion
Main risk A more active surface may also accelerate a side reaction The coating can introduce transport, conductivity, wetting or stability effects that are unrelated to charge
Best-fit target Reactions whose rate can be changed through surface chemistry Processes involving a charged target substrate and a competing charged species

These strategies are not mutually exclusive. A catalyst can provide the chemical sites needed for nitrate reduction while a charged overlayer adjusts which ions reach those sites. The practical challenge is keeping the ionomer thin and conductive enough for the desired reaction while preserving its charge and chemical stability during electrolysis.

What the result does—and does not—establish

It demonstrates a controllable selectivity direction

In the reported comparison, switching from the cationic PDDA coating to the anionic Nafion coating changed both hydrogen evolution and ammonia production in opposite directions. That makes surface-charge polarity a controllable experimental variable rather than a fixed property of the carbon-nanotube electrode.

It does not establish industrial durability

The report describes a laboratory demonstration. It does not provide enough information to conclude how long the ionomer layers retain their charge, whether they withstand impurities, how they behave at industrial current densities, or how coating thickness affects lifetime. Those questions determine whether a promising interfacial effect can survive continuous operation.

It does not prove universal pH independence

Experimental electrochemist Heng Rao of Jilin University told Chemistry World that “The pH-insensitive nature of this approach makes it broadly applicable across diverse conditions, unlike many existing strategies that are limited to specific pH ranges.” That is an expert assessment of the concept’s potential. It should not be read as evidence that every charged coating will behave identically across all pH values. Proton concentration, ion pairing, screening by dissolved salts and changes in nitrate speciation can still influence the local electric field and reaction rates.

How researchers can evaluate a new electrostatic-decatalysis system

  1. Identify the charged reactant. Determine whether the substrate that must reach the electrode is an anion or cation under the intended solvent, pH and applied potential.
  2. Map the competing species. List protons, hydroxide, solvent molecules and other ions that can consume current or occupy catalytic sites.
  3. Choose the charge polarity. Select a coating that attracts the target ion while discouraging the dominant competing ion, then define the expected direction of the selectivity change before testing.
  4. Separate charge from film effects. Measure wettability, electronic resistance, electrochemically active area and mass transport, because each can change when an ionomer is added.
  5. Use an opposite-charge control. A coating with reversed charge, such as the PDDA-versus-Nafion comparison reported here, helps test whether the reaction trend follows electrostatic polarity.
  6. Track products and energy together. Faradaic selectivity, ammonia yield, hydrogen formation and full-cell voltage are different metrics. A coating that improves one can worsen another.
  7. Test stability under realistic operation. Monitor charge retention, ionomer loss, fouling and performance as current, electrolyte composition and operating time change.

Where the concept may go next

The team is exploring other reactions, including carbon dioxide conversion. That is a research direction, not a demonstrated application in the report. Carbon dioxide reduction involves several possible intermediates and products, and the charge state of the species that actually reacts at the surface can differ from the charge state of dissolved carbon dioxide. Applying electrostatic decatalysis there would require evidence that the relevant target intermediate can be selectively concentrated or that a competing pathway can be repelled.

More broadly, the concept is most compelling for electrochemical systems in which ionic reactants compete directly with ionic side-reaction precursors. It is less obviously useful when the desired substrate is neutral, when charge screening is extremely strong, or when the coating blocks electron transfer and mass transport more than it improves selectivity.

Bottom line for readers

Electrostatic decatalysis uses a charged electrode surface to suppress a competing electrochemical reaction rather than relying solely on a more active catalyst. In the reported nitrate-reduction demonstration, positive PDDA on carbon nanotubes favored nitrate-to-ammonia conversion over hydrogen evolution, while negative Nafion shifted the balance toward hydrogen. A two-electrode device using ferrocyanide oxidation reportedly saved more than 50% energy relative to a nitrate-reduction/oxygen-evolution cell.

The decisive limitation is charge: the target substrate must be charged for the proposed Coulombic steering mechanism to operate. The findings establish an intriguing laboratory strategy for selectivity control, while durability, scale-up and performance across other reactions remain open engineering questions.
