The key finding is structural, not simply a particle-size effect: ruthenium clusters deposited on graphitic nanofibers started as disordered, weakly active material, then reorganized during activation and ammonia decomposition into ordered, stepped, truncated nano-pyramids. Identical-location aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (IL-AC-STEM) followed the same clusters through that change. The resulting stepped edges were associated with a higher density of catalytic sites, and the Ru/graphitic-nanofiber (Ru/GNF) material became more active over 20 hours in the study’s laboratory test.

What reaction and catalyst did the study examine?

Ammonia decomposition, sometimes called ammonia cracking, breaks ammonia into nitrogen and hydrogen:

2 NH3 → N2 + 3 H2

Chen and colleagues studied a specific catalyst made by depositing ruthenium atoms directly onto graphitic nanofibers (GNFs). This is not a generic commercial ruthenium catalyst or a claim about every ruthenium formulation. The paper, “Evolution of amorphous ruthenium nanoclusters into stepped truncated nano-pyramids on graphitic surfaces boosts hydrogen production from ammonia,” appeared in Chemical Science 16(6), pages 2648–2660, in 2025 (first published online 9 January 2025; DOI 10.1039/D4SC06382A).

The as-prepared material contained ruthenium clusters with footprints of roughly 1 nm². Their atoms were arranged in irregular, amorphous-looking shapes rather than well-defined crystals. The important question was what happened to those individual clusters when the catalyst was activated and then used to decompose ammonia.

Why identical-location STEM changes the evidence

Most catalyst studies compare a sample before and after a reaction. That can show that the material changed, but it cannot always establish whether the same particle changed, whether different particles were being compared, or which structural event came first. Chen’s team used IL-AC-STEM to return to the same locations and track individual Ru clusters through successive stages.

Aberration correction improves the microscope’s ability to resolve atomic-scale features. The “identical-location” part is equally important: images from the same support regions can be matched over time. The researchers could therefore quantify changes in ordering, edge geometry, particle footprint and growth rather than inferring them only from bulk averages.

Andrei Khlobystov of the University of Nottingham described the observation in a Chemistry World report published 3 February 2025: “Each nanocluster undergoes internal changes, transitioning from amorphous shapes to crystalline nanoscale pyramids.” That comment is an accessible description of the microscopy result; the experimental measurements come from the Chemical Science paper.

The structural sequence from activation to reaction

1. Disordered Ru clusters are deposited on the GNF support

Ruthenium was deposited directly onto graphitic nanofibers, producing small clusters with approximately 1 nm² footprints and irregular atomic arrangements. The graphitic surface is not just a passive carrier in this experiment: it provides a support on which Ru atoms can move, assemble and develop new edge structures.

2. Hydrogen activation orders the atoms

Activation in hydrogen at 450 °C induced ordering inside the initially disordered clusters. The microscope also showed dispersed single Ru atoms on the graphitic support during activation. Those isolated atoms were not considered the likely reason for the later increase in activity because they were observed only during the initial part of the reaction.

Two growth processes were observed during activation: coalescence, in which neighboring clusters merge, and Ostwald ripening, in which atoms leave smaller structures and contribute to larger ones. Both can enlarge particles, but they describe different pathways for redistribution of Ru.

3. Reaction conditions favor coalescence and ordered pyramids

Once ammonia decomposition was underway, coalescence became the main growth mechanism reported by the authors. The clusters evolved toward crystalline, stepped, truncated nano-pyramids rather than simply becoming featureless larger particles. Their edges became more ordered and developed terraces and steps that were not present in the starting material.

The study therefore connects activation with an internal rearrangement of atoms and reaction operation with continued shape evolution. Particle growth happened at the same time as increased atomic order; neither observation should be reduced to the statement that “bigger particles are better.”

How the new shape is linked to hydrogen production

A catalytic reaction does not use every atom in a nanoparticle equally. Atoms exposed on a surface, especially atoms at steps, corners and other low-coordination locations, can bind and transform reactants differently from atoms in flat terraces or inside the particle.

For the Ru/GNF system, the authors propose that the ordered stepped edges increased the density of sites relevant to the rate-determining step of ammonia decomposition. As clusters reorganized into truncated pyramids, their edge geometry supplied more of these catalytically useful arrangements.

There is an important countervailing effect. As a cluster grows, the fraction of all ruthenium atoms that lies at the surface generally falls. The paper reports that this reduction in surface-atom fraction occurred, yet the specific stepped and ordered geometry increased the concentration of the active site type enough to raise measured activity. The proposed explanation is therefore a balance between fewer surface atoms proportionally and a more favorable arrangement of the atoms that remain exposed.

Jesum Alves Fernandes of the University of Nottingham summarized the design implication in the same Chemistry World coverage: “We realised that if we can manage the surface diffusion of metal atoms by controlling the barriers to atom movement, as well as factors like temperature, density and the nature of surface defects, we can design catalytic centres of desired size and shape.” In practical terms, controlling how Ru atoms move may be as important as selecting the metal itself.

Key dimensions and time points reported by the paper

Measurement or condition What Chen and colleagues reported How to interpret it
Initial cluster footprint Approximately 1 nm² Approximate footprint of the irregular, disordered Ru clusters deposited on GNFs.
Hydrogen activation 450 °C Temperature at which ordering of Ru atoms was observed during activation.
Most favorable nano-pyramid footprint 2–3 nm² Range associated with the maximum concentration of active sites for the rate-determining step in this study.
Nano-pyramid thickness 3–5 atomic layers Thickness range reported for the structures associated with that active-site concentration.
Growth during reaction Approximately 4 nm² typical upper footprint The authors reported that pyramids could grow to about this footprint even after 12 hours of reaction.
Activity observation Increase over 20 hours Ru/GNF activity rose during the paper’s ammonia-decomposition test; the figure is study-specific, not a universal lifetime claim.

These dimensions are experimental values for this Ru/GNF material and its operating protocol. They are not specifications that every ruthenium catalyst should meet.

What happened to activity during 20 hours?

Under the conditions compared in the paper, the Ru/GNF catalyst increased in activity over 20 hours of ammonia decomposition. In the same comparison, ruthenium supported on metal oxides declined in performance. That contrast is useful because it shows that the graphitic support and the way Ru evolves on it may matter to time-on-stream behavior.

It does not establish that Ru/GNF will outperform every oxide-supported catalyst in every reactor, temperature range, gas composition or measurement protocol. The study reports a particular laboratory comparison, not a universal ranking of ammonia-cracking catalysts. The available results also do not establish an industrial operating life, a scale-up pathway or a cost advantage.

Why the isolated Ru atoms were not the main explanation

Microscopy detected dispersed single Ru atoms on the graphitic support during the activation stage. Single atoms can have unusual coordination and catalytic properties, so their presence is an important observation. However, the authors considered them unlikely to account for the activity increase later in the run because they were present only during the initial part of the reaction.

The activity trend continued as the clusters themselves became more ordered and developed stepped pyramid shapes. The paper consequently places the explanatory weight on the evolving cluster edges and atomic ordering, not on a persistent population of isolated Ru atoms.

How coalescence and Ostwald ripening differ

Coalescence

Coalescence occurs when adjacent Ru clusters come together and merge into a larger structure. The paper identifies this as the principal growth mechanism under reaction conditions. Merging can change the number and arrangement of steps, terraces and corners at the same time that it changes footprint.

Ostwald ripening

Ostwald ripening redistributes material through the support: atoms or small species leave smaller clusters and contribute to larger ones. The researchers observed this process during activation, but it was not the dominant mechanism they reported once the ammonia-decomposition reaction was operating.

Why distinguishing them matters

Both mechanisms can produce larger particles in a conventional before-and-after image. Identical-location tracking separates the pathways and links them to the conditions under which they occur. That distinction helps researchers decide whether to change support defects, atom mobility, cluster spacing or activation temperature when attempting to reproduce a desired shape.

What the microscopy result does—and does not—prove

  • It does show: the same Ru/GNF regions can be observed changing from disordered clusters to more ordered, stepped, truncated nano-pyramids.
  • It does show: the Ru/GNF sample’s measured activity increased over the reported 20-hour ammonia-decomposition experiment.
  • It supports: a mechanism in which stepped edges increase the density of active sites relevant to the rate-determining step.
  • It does not show: that larger particles alone cause higher activity.
  • It does not establish: commercial deployment, cost competitiveness, a guaranteed reactor lifetime, or performance across all ammonia-cracking systems.
  • It does not establish: that ammonia-derived hydrogen is automatically carbon-free over its full lifecycle. The emissions outcome depends on how ammonia and the required heat are produced.

Why this is a design lesson for future catalysts

The study turns catalyst aging and activation into a design variable. A catalyst may begin in a poorly ordered state and become more useful only after its atoms rearrange under working conditions. If researchers can control the barriers to surface diffusion, they may be able to steer clusters toward a target footprint, thickness and edge structure rather than accepting whatever shape forms during operation.

The reported 2–3 nm² footprint and 3–5-layer thickness identify a range in which the paper found the highest concentration of relevant active sites. The observation that pyramids continued growing toward approximately 4 nm² after 12 hours also shows why a single “optimal particle size” is not enough: the structure evolves, and the active-site population depends on shape and ordering as well as dimensions.

Graphitic supports may be especially informative for this kind of work because their surfaces allow researchers to image individual metal structures and examine how defects, spacing and atom mobility affect evolution. Khlobystov told Chemistry World that the imaging requires no extra specialist equipment beyond a transmission electron microscope, although obtaining reliable identical-location, aberration-corrected measurements still requires suitable instrumentation, sample preparation and expertise.

How to read this result when comparing ammonia catalysts

A fair comparison should keep more than the metal constant. Check the support, ruthenium loading, cluster distribution, activation history, reaction temperature, feed composition, pressure, time on stream and the definition of “activity.” Hydrogen production, ammonia conversion and rate normalized by catalyst mass or exposed metal are not interchangeable metrics.

Also ask how structure was characterized. A bulk technique may report an average oxidation state or particle size, while IL-AC-STEM can reveal whether a particular edge or cluster actually changed. For this paper, the particle-level evidence is central to the proposed mechanism.

Bottom line for readers

Electron microscopy showed a plausible structural chain: disordered Ru clusters on graphitic nanofibers were activated at 450 °C, their atoms ordered, neighboring clusters merged, and the resulting particles developed stepped, truncated nano-pyramidal edges. Those edges were associated with a higher density of sites for ammonia decomposition, helping explain why activity increased over 20 hours even as cluster growth reduced the overall fraction of surface Ru atoms. It is a carefully observed laboratory result for one Ru/GNF material—not proof that every larger ruthenium particle, every support or every ammonia-hydrogen system will behave the same way.
